1 Issue # 16 November 2018 CSJs and Nuns on the Bus The Nuns on the Bus Tax Justice Truth Tour rolled through three of our four provinces "On the Road to Mar-A-Lago"! (Though the bus didn't visit St. Paul this year, NETWORK did host a town hall event there before the tour began.) It rolled through St. Louis where many of our Sisters were able to attend a packed town hall event. The tour kicked off in LA, where Sister Judy Molosky and the St. Joseph Workers wished Julie Fertsch, SSJ well on the bus. 1 In the Northeast, Sister Betsy Van Deusen not only rode the bus, she celebrated her birthday on board!
2 In case you missed it: Archives blessing Our team s inception was the result of the 2013 Chapter and its call to "intensify collaboration, experimentation, and consolidation in order to maximize our resources and generate new possibilities for the sake of mission." Carondelet Consolidated Archive Director Jane Behlmann, CSJ sprinkles water on the new archive space at the conclusion of the blessing ceremony. The congregation celebrated the official blessing of the Carondelet Consolidated Archive on Founders Day, October 15! You can watch an interview with the congregational archivists, take a video tour of the Carondelet Consolidated Archive, and watch the full recording of the archives blessing ceremony on the Congregational YouTube channel. Partnering With New Eyes by Sisters Doreen Glenn, Danielle Bonetti, and Diane Smith Let us introduce ourselves. We are the Congregational Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Team, and we are alive and well. Our members are Doreen Glynn (Albany), Diane Smith (Los Angeles), Mary Flick (St. Louis), Marty Roers and Megan Bender (St. Paul). Danielle Bonetti serves as the CLT Liaison. We are also the present JPIC Coordinators of our Provinces. 2 The members of the JPIC working group took this directive very seriously and had great fun dreaming of possible ways to respond to this call. Eventually, we became more realistic and practical and came up with ways to use our present ministers of justice to avoid increasing personnel and expense and adding yet another structure. We presented our mission and working objectives at a meeting of the CLG in March of 2018 and received great affirmation and encouragement. Collaboratively, we have developed over 18 congregational statements addressing current issues affecting the dear neighbor. We made our CLT aware and encouraged them to sign on to letters with other major organizations. There has been and continues to be a quick response and support of LCWR and Federation statements. In addition to our JPIC ministry in each of our units, we act as a congregational team through monthly Zoom calls and an annual face-to-face meeting. At our meeting in St. Louis in 2017, we
3 chose to focus our collaborative work in three areas: Caring for Creation, Dismantling Discrimination, and Promoting Peace and Nonviolence. At this year s meeting in early October, we added Working and Advocating for Economic Justice. All that we are doing individually in our provinces fits within our now four foci. In our recent October meeting in St. Paul, we continued our work to make plans for just how we will collaborate as we move forward in meeting our goals in service of the dear neighbor. Calls for Justice Our congregation signed on to an interfaith letter regarding the migrant caravan. The federation echoed LCWR's statements regarding: Antisemitism The humane treatment of migrants The need for action in the midterm election You still have time to participate in a video dialogue about Congregational Chapter Selections either on Thursday, November 15 or Wednesday, November 21. Selections Process Response Forms for congregational leadership are due back on December 1. Upcoming Events and Meetings: Nov 14: Congregational Leadership Selections Committee Meeting Nov 17-18: Albany Province Assembly Nov 20: Congregational Chapter Planning Committee Meeting Nov 22: Thanksgiving; Congregational Offices Closed Nov 23: Congregational Offices Closed Dec 1-3: Innovation Committee Meeting Dec 2: First Sunday of Advent Dec 6-9: St. Louis Province Chapter of Elections A reflection from Mary Ann Leininger, CSJ Congregational Leadership Team The Innovation Committee Phase 2 Feedback Survey is due by November 19. Usually, when we go somewhere, we have a general idea about WHY AND WHERE we want to go. Maybe it s to travel and visit family or friends, 3
4 make retreat, do some shopping, even to go and get a haircut. At times we need more details, directions, how much time is involved. It reminds me of our CSJ journey together as we prepare ourselves for the Congregational Chapter in July It feels like a future full of movement of unknowns, uncertainties and also of opportunities. The first Sisters who came to America speaking only French had no idea what was ahead for them or how the future would unfold. How could they have imagined who we are today? We are in a critical time of our human history and being called by the Spirit to respond. As women with an active and inclusive love of God, who long to serve a world in need, can we be and do whatever it takes to boldly make us ready now and into the future?
