Fish Fry Grand Knight s Message Some of our members may not know that we lost two Brothers recently. Brother Larry McGourty was a 3rd and 4th Degree Knight. He was lifelong resident of Saratoga and a Retired Army Veteran. Larry was a member of several organizations and gave back to his community in many ways. Brother Bill Joubert was a past Columbian President with many contributions to our Council including providing us with wonderful meals and numerous fundraisers. He was the one that helped me find my niche in becoming more involved with our organization. I helped Bill cook for different fundraisers, then took over for him when he was unable to continue. Now with Frank Bunch I am very proud to cook weekly for the Homeless Veterans and Code Blue and our other fundraisers including the fish fry s and Chowder Festival. Please look into your heart and see in what way you as a Brother Knight can contribute to our Council. We had to cancel our Cabin Fever Party this year due to lack of support. I am not sure that our members realize that their support is necessary to keep our doors open. The severe winter weather has created additional expenses for heat and snow removal on top of our monthly expenses. Please consider working or attending our fundraisers. It is also unfortunate that our fellow parishioners are not attending our events. We send checks to the three Catholic Schools in our area and also have done some maintenance work in the buildings. With their support, perhaps we could contribute more back to the schools. If you or someone you know have children attending these schools please ask them to try one of our events. Like our fish fry s, I m sure once people try our meals they will come back. This month s report has become about our Brothers stepping up and helping make our events successful. I understand none of us are getting any younger. Just attending a fundraiser with family or friends, will go a long way in the success of Council #246. I would also like your ideas on how we may get our newer members involved. I thank all our Brothers who, over the years, have contributed and supported our events. Our Council has helped this community for over 120 years and we are looking for support to continue with our work. 2 Columbian Report Golfing in North Carolina has been wonderful - except when the courses are closed for snow storms or subfreezing temps. Back in NY, January is always a hard month for the Columbian, when expenses usually exceed income by a significant amount. However, the indomitable team of Schwartzbeck and Tarity, my ever reliable back-ups, have been busy making numerous bookings. Charity Unity Fraternity Patriotism With super big help from Bingo, we replaced 80 stacking banquet chairs suffering the ravages of wear and tear. The winter has also been hard on the plowing budget, with $2,000 spent for plowing and a salt supply. However, the long term picture continues to be very positive, thanks to Rick and Dave. 3 Chaplain s Report February is a very special month for me. My birthday is in February, also my mothers birthday, my wedding anniversary and the month that I made Eagle Scout. February is also special to me because as a 9 year old in the third grade at Blessed Sacrament School in Albany, I was introduced to a wonderful saint, Bernadette. Our teacher, Sister Patrice on the feast day of a saint would read to us the life story of the saint. On February 11, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Mary appeared to a young, sickly, uneducated and dirt poor girl named Bernadette Soubirous. It was the first 16 apparitions Mary made to the youngster. During one of the apparitions Bernadette asked the "Lady" who she was. The "Lady" smiled and said in Bernadette s native tongue, :Que soy era Immaculada Concepciou" which means, I am the Immaculate Conception". When Bernadette told her pastor what the "Lady" had said the pastor was overwhelmed. He knew that the illiterate Bernadette could not have possibly known any thing at all about such a thing. At Mary's request Bernadette dug a hole with her fingers and water flowed out and to this day is still flowing and nobody knows the source of the spring. Thousands of cures have taken place there because of the healing waters. The Church has only officially recognized less than a hundred. Bernadette died at the age of 34. When her body was exhumed it was found to be incorrupt. She was placed in a glass coffin at her convent in Nevers, France. She looks like she is sleeping. In 1933 she was canonized as Saint Bernadette rather than her convent name, Sister Marie-Bernard. Since the Grotto and Shrine were opened to the public millions of people annually visit the Shrine. I started praying to Bernadette when I was 9 years old. I will be 88 years old on February 22 and I am still in touch with her. We have had many special moments together over the years. We will be holding our Red Auction in which our Members bring in items to be bid on by other members with the proceeds going to benefit Birthright in Ballston Spa. Refreshments are at 6PM with the auction and meeting immediately following. Our Court will be holding a Morning of Reflection, with brunch following, on Saturday, March 24th, from 9AM to 1PM in the small meeting room at the Knights of Columbus. I would like to invite, on behalf of Court McLaughlin, all members of the Knights of Columbus and their families to join us. Our Court always welcomes new members or anyone who would like to attend a meeting to find out what we are about.
