2 A Note From Our Pastor Dear Friends, To participate in the life of the church a person promises to support God s work through the giving of financial gifts. Paul provided some instructions on how a church was to give to God. They have become the foundation of giving in the church to this present day giving money on the first day of the week during worship, and sending money to help the church in other parts of the world: Now concerning the collection for the saints: you should follow the directions I gave to the churches in Galatia. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put aside and save whatever extra you earn, so that collections need not be taken when I come. And when I arrive, I will send any whom you approve with letters to take your gift to Jerusalem. (1 Corinthians 16:1-3) This reasoning of Paul could be the foundation of the United Methodist apportionment monies, which local churches send to a United Methodist Annual Conference to be distributed to people in need throughout the world. Financial gifts are an important aspect of a person s spiritual growth and a way for individuals to participate in the ministry of the Church. Kennon L. Callahan states in his book, Effective Church Finances, Congregations that practice effective church finances keep first things first. They focus some of their very best creativity, leadership, and energies on advancing their mission. This focus on advancing their mission also helps them to develop healthy habits of church finances. We are about to enter our summer season with people traveling and taking vacations. Remember to continue to support God s work through your gifts during our summer activities. For it is at this meeting that plans for the expansion of the Sanctuary will be presented, discussed and voted upon. There will be two votes: *The first item to be voted upon is yea or nay to accept the recommendation for the expansion as presented by our Trustees. *The second item to be voted upon is yea or nay to accept the recommendation of the Trustees and the Council to pay for the expansion with funds from the existing surplus in the 2017 operating budget as building costs are incurred and billed. Assuming approval of the two votes above, the plans must be presented to the District Board of Church Location and Building. This group will advise us of meeting details (date, time & place). Assuming approval of the District Board, construction plans will be refined and detailed as well as a schedule for the work. At some point, we will move our Sunday Services to Fellowship Hall until the construction is complete on the Sanctuary. Keeping with tradition, Liberty hosted an open Easter Sunrise Service for our two congregations and our community. A moving service was followed by an Easter Breakfast Feast for the approximately 200 in attendance. With a very busy April and Easter season completed it is now time to look at upcoming events and activities: May 6 Garage Sale benefitting Children s Camp Fund May 11 Fellowship Dinner (yes, it is 2 nd Thursday not 3 rd ) May 18 Church Council (yes it is 3 rd Thursday not 2 nd ) June 15 Fellowship Dinner (featuring Johnny Magic) June 18 Last service led by Dr. Dick White July 2 First Service led by Reverend Keefe Cropper Liberty UMC Communion Rail Offering for May 7, 2017 July 4 Patriotic Cookout Methodist Retirement Home 7
