2 4. Poetry: The Wolf; Escape at Bedtime Introducing the Poems Poets use descriptive words and figurative language to create mental images. These images help you to see and feel what is happening in the poem. Read The Wolf (page 120). fter you read it, initial the line. Complete each exercise about The Wolf. 1. Write two onomatopoeic words from the first stanza that help you hear sounds. 2. Write the alliterative phrase from the first line. 3. Describe what you see when you read the words The gray wolf sits on the world s far rim. 4. Underline the word and number that complete the sentence. The poem ends with a couplet, triplet that repeats lines from Stanza 1, 2. Mood Mood is the feeling that writing creates. The author s words help the reader to experience certain feelings and emotions. Descriptive words, along with details of the setting, especially help to set the mood. The words used in The Wolf create a lonely mood. There in the night, alone, apart, Singing the song of his lone, wild heart. B Complete the exercise. 5. Study these words from The Wolf : pale, wild, wail, howls, shuns, gloom, lean, ragged. The poet mostly used poetic feet that have three syllables per foot. The first two syllables in each foot are unaccented, and the last one is accented. D Scan the meter of each line. The first two lines are done for you; notice that the first line begins with an iambic foot. 12.
