3 WELCOME TO SCRIPTURE ADVENTURES! You are about to begin a very exciting adventure through the pages of the Old Testament. Along the way, you ll meet prophets, kings, bad guys, and even a talking donkey! Most importantly though, you ll discover some of God s true principles that will help you with your life. Did you know that the Lord knows how smart and amazing you are? Even though you are still a kid, you can do great things! In New Testament times, the Lord inspired the Apostle Paul to write a letter to a man named Timothy. Timothy was a very young and pretty inexperienced church leader. Like you, he probably didn t feel like he knew the scriptures as well as he wanted to. But Paul encouraged Timothy. He said, Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity (1 Timothy 4:12). Paul was telling Timothy that he could still be an example of faith and belief even though he was young. Paul reminded Timothy about something else important: From a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:15). You can know the scriptures as a child, too! Learning about the doctrines of the gospel in the scriptures will make you wise unto salvation like Timothy was. A TESTAMENT OF CHRIST The Old Testament is a testament (something that testifies) of Christ. The prophets all looked forward to his coming. They taught about his birth and his mission. They taught about his atonement. As you study the Old Testament, you can strengthen your own testimony of Christ. Old Testament Page 3

4 INTRODUCTION TO THE OLD TESTAMENT The Old Testament begins with the creation of man and tells the history of one group of God s people from Adam and Eve until about 400 years before Jesus Christ was born. There are many books of scripture, written by lots of different prophets, that make up the Old Testament. Some of the writings of the prophets were gathered and edited by the prophet Ezra about 450 years before Christ was born. Others were put together long after Christ had died. The Old Testament is organized into thirty-nine books. Which are grouped into four sections: 1. The Law These are the first five books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. They were written by the prophet Moses and cover history from creation until the life of Moses. They contain many laws that God gave Moses and his people, so they are often called The Law. 2. The History This group of books from Joshua through Esther is the history of the children of Israel from the time of Joshua s leadership to the time of Queen Esther in Babylon. Learning the history of God s people will help you see how the Lord worked in the lives of the people and how he can work in your life, too! 3. The Writings and Poetry The books of Job through Song of Solomon are poetic writings. They are from various authors at various times during the history of Israel. The exact time that most of them are written is impossible to tell. 4. The Prophets The rest of the books in the Old Testament contain the writings of prophets who preached repentance to God s people. They are not in chronological order. As you study through Scripture Adventures, you will learn about these books as they fall in history, so you ll be reading them in a different order than they come in your Bible. Old Testament Page 4

7 STRUCTURE OF THE LESSONS Scripture Adventures will take you through the Old Testament in chronological order the order in which the historical events happened. There are eleven units of Old Testament material and one review unit at the end. In the lessons you ll find an explanation of historical events, comments on gospel principles, and introductions to major characters. In most lessons, you ll also find a text box along the right hand side of the page with verses from the Old Testament for you to read. You will see a reference at the top of the box for the book and chapter that the reading comes from. The verses will be numbered in the text. Some verses will be skipped, or shortened to keep the flow of the story or concentrate on the major points of the passage. Feel fee to mark the text with highlighter, red pencil, or anything that will help you identify the most important parts of the passage. Sometimes you will be asked to underline or circle something specific as you read. Always ask yourself, How can these principles help me in my life? Some of the units have projects or crafts that may help you learn more about a topic. If you like to be creative jump in and have fun. If you want to skip some of the them go ahead. GENESIS 11 TOWER OF BABEL 1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. Finally, you ll be asked to memorize certain key verses that contain important gospel principles. Learning Memory Verses can be a lot of fun. Learn them with your family and make it a game around the dinner table to see who can remember the most! To help you keep track of the verses that you have learned and to keep you practicing them along the way, use the chart in Unit 12 (at the back) to mark off what you have memorized. 9 ISRAELITES ARE MADE SLAVES The Twelve Tribes of Israel grew in Egypt. They were called Israelites or Hebrews. They had more and more children and the Lord prospered them. Soon, the Pharaoh died and a new one, who did not know Joseph, came to power. He was afraid of the strength of Israel. Read the verses on the right. Underline what Pharaoh decided to do to the children of Israel. What did the Pharaoh do to the families of Israel? Even as slaves, the number of Israelites continued to grow. Finally, the Pharaoh came up with a new solution to the problem. He told the midwives that when a Hebrew mother had a baby, if it be a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live. But the midwives feared God and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive (Exodus 1:16-17). Pharaoh was angry that his plan hadn t worked, and he told all of his people that all Israelite baby boys must be thrown into the river! In the next lesson, we will read about a mother who saved her baby boy in a special way. But for now, let s learn a little bit more about the jobs of the Israelite slaves. The Bible says that one of the jobs of the Hebrews was to build treasure cities for Pharaoh. They had to use straw and clay to form bricks, which hardened and then were used to make buildings. Other slaves probably served the Egyptians in their homes and taking care of their animals. EXODUS 1 INTO SLAVERY 7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. 8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. 9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: 10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply...11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses...13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour: 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour. The children of Israel did the work of slaves. Old Testament Page 72

10 BABY MOSES IS SAVED As you read in the last lesson, the Pharaoh was worried because the Tribes of Israel were becoming too large. He decreed that all male babies must be killed! In this lesson, you will read how baby Moses was saved by his mother and his sister and went to live in the house of Pharaoh himself! EXODUS 2 THE RIVER 2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. 3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river s brink. 4 And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. 5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. 6 And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews children. 7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? 8 And Pharaoh s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child s mother. 9 And Pharaoh s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water. Baby Moses was found by Pharaoh s daughter. So Moses was saved by his mother (with help and inspiration and protection from the Lord), and grew up as a prince in the house of Pharaoh! He learned about the Egyptian way of life, and many things that would prepare him for the great mission that God had for him. God often does things that prepare us for the future. We may not know how he will use our skills and talents in the future, but if we are willing, he will help us develop them so that we will be ready to serve when he needs us! Old Testament Page 73

11 INTO THE WILDERNESS Moses didn t stay in Egypt for his whole life. As he grew, he began to see the unfair treatment of his people. He couldn t stand to see them in bondage as slaves. One day, Moses saw an Egyptian guard beating a Hebrew slave. He tried to stop the guard EXODUS 3 BURNING BUSH 1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God. 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. The Israelites were treated badly as slaves. and he killed him! Moses was scared. He didn t want Pharaoh to find out what he had done. He buried the guard s body in the sand. But Pharaoh did find out. He was angry with Moses, and Moses had to flee for his life. He went north to a land called Midian. There he met a righteous man, Jethro, and eventually married one of his daughters. He lived for many years in Midian, working as a shepherd. Then one day, he was called to do a great work for the Lord. Read the story of Moses call in the verses on the right. Underline where God wanted Moses to go! 4 And...God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry... 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. 12 MEMORY VERSE COPYWORK Use the space below to copy the words from Exodus 3:5 several times. This verse tells Moses that he is standing on holy ground and should show respect for it. It should also remind us to show respect for holy places that we visit like our church buildings. Exodus 3:5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. Old Testament Page 75

13 MOSES IS CALLED What was Moses called to do? (Exodus 3:10) How do you think Moses reacted? Moses didn t feel like he was up to the job. He had three main objections. Read the verses on the right and write down why Moses felt he couldn t do what the Lord asked him to do. Reason #1: Reason #2: Reason #3: Now go back and read the verses again. Notice that each time Moses had an objection, the Lord showed him how to overcome it. Circle the promise that the Lord gave Moses to help him overcome the objections that he had to serving God. So, Moses had a calling. He prepared to leave for Egypt. When he arrived, he met with the leaders of the Hebrews and did exactly as the Lord had commanded him. And the people believed, and when they heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped (Exodus 4:31). EXODUS 3 REASON #1 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. 11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee...20 And I will stretch out my hand and smite Egypt with all my wonders. EXODUS 4 REASON #2 1 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they (the people of Israel) will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee. (And then God gave Moses three signs to show the people of Israel that the Lord had called him.) EXODUS 4 REASON #3 10 And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. 11 And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord? 14 SIGNS FOR MOSES Do some additional reading in Exodus to find out about the signs that Moses was given from the Lord to show both Moses himself and the Israelites that the Lord had really called him to lead. 15 MOSES AND AARON APPROACH PHARAOH Moses and Aaron before Pharaoh. Moses and his brother Aaron went before Pharaoh. Aaron spoke for Moses. He said, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go. Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice? When Pharaoh heard the request of Moses and Aaron, he decided that the Hebrew slaves weren t busy enough. He declared that they should continue making bricks to build with, but that they also be forced to collect straw to make their bricks as well! The slaves couldn t keep up with all of the extra work and they were punished by their guards. Moses and Aaron went back to Pharaoh. Moses cast Aaron s rod on the floor and it became a snake! Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers and the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron s rod swallowed up their rods! (Exodus 7:11-13). The Lord was beginning to prove to Pharaoh that he was the one true God, and mightier than all of Pharaoh s servants. Old Testament Page 78
