12 A rally cry goes out across Israel and they united as one man against this city. They muster 400,000 swordsmen. The Benjaminites do not want to give over the city. They muster 26,000 swordsmen and 700 left-handed stone slinging assassins. Each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. (20:16) Round One: Benji s strike down 22,000 Israelites Round Two: They strike down 18,000 Israelites. Round Three: The Israelites trick them and strike down 25,100 Benjaminites.

13 600 flee into the desert and hide for four months. Israel sacks all the towns of the Benjaminites and put everything to the sword and burn them down. But Israel eventually feels bad about this and want the Benjaminites to recover as a tribe. But they have no women left and the other Israelites have sworn not to give any of their daughters to a Benjaminite in marriage. So they raid Jabesh Gilead, kill everyone except the virgins who are given to the 700 Benjaminites who are left. Of course, there are not enough, so they orchestrate a raid during the annual festival of the Lord at Shiloh.

15 You have seen all that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake The LORD your God will push them back before you, and drive them out of your sight; and you shall possess their land, as the LORD your God promised you. Therefore be very steadfast to observe and do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses so that you may not be mixed with these nations hold fast to the LORD your God Be very careful, therefore, to love the LORD your God. For if you turn back, and join the survivors of these nations they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a scourge on your sides, and thorns in your eyes (Joshua 23:3-13; see also Numbers 33:51-56).

23 The 12 judges overlap chronologically (but not geographically). (see next slide) The book covers less than 200 years, not 390). In the last story, Aaron s Grandson is the priest at Shiloh. In the next to last story about idolatry, the priest is Moses grandson.

25 The Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the LORD (Judg 2:11; 3:7; 3:12; 4:1; 6:1; 9:23; 10:6; 13:1). In those days there was no king of Israel; all the people did what was right in their own eyes (Judg 17:6; 18:1; 19:1; 21:25).
