1 FIRST DAY: Read the notes and the references. SECOND DAY: Read Exodus 32:1-14 The Golden Calf [32:1] When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him. [2] Aaron answered them, Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me. [3] So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. [4] He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt. [5] When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, Tomorrow there will be a festival to the LORD. [6] So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry. [7] Then the LORD said to Moses, Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. [8] They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.' [9] I have seen these people, the LORD said to Moses, and they are a stiff-necked people. [10] Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation. [11] But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God. O LORD, he said, why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? [12] Why should the Egyptians say, It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth'? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people. [13] Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.' [14] Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened. Question 3c Exodus 12:36; [36] The LORD had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians. Question 4b 1 Corinthians 10:6-7, 11-13; [6] Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. [7] Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry. [11] These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. [12] So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! [13] No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. THIRD DAY: Read Exodus 32:15-24; [15] Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back. [16] The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. 1
2 [17] When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, There is the sound of war in the camp. [18] Moses replied: It is not the sound of victory, it is not the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear. [19] When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. [20] And he took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it. [21] He said to Aaron, What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin? [22] Do not be angry, my lord, Aaron answered. You know how prone these people are to evil. [23] They said to me, Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him.' [24] So I told them, Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.' Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf! Question 7a Exodus 24:14; [14] He said to the elders, Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you, and anyone involved in a dispute can go to them. FOURTH DAY: Read Exodus 32:25-29 [25] Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies. [26] So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, Whoever is for the LORD, come to me. And all the Levites rallied to him. [27] Then he said to them, This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.' [28] The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. [29] Then Moses said, You have been set apart to the LORD today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day. Question 9c Matthew 10:37; [37] Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; Luke 14:26; [26] If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters yes, even his own life he cannot be my disciple. FIFTH DAY: Read Exodus 32:30-33:6 [30] The next day Moses said to the people, You have committed a great sin. But now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin. [31] So Moses went back to the LORD and said, Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. [32] But now, please forgive their sin but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written. [33] The LORD replied to Moses, Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book. [34] Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin. [35] And the LORD struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made. 2
3 Exodus 33 [33:1] Then the LORD said to Moses, Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, I will give it to your descendants.' [2] I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. [3] Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way. [4] When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no one put on any ornaments. [5] For the LORD had said to Moses, Tell the Israelites, You are a stiffnecked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.' [6] So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb. Question 10a Romans 9:1-3; [9:1] I speak the truth in Christ I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit [2] I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. [3] For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, Question 10b Matthew 1:21; [21] She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Question 10c Romans 3:23-26; [23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, [24] and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. [25] God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished [26] he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Galatians 4:4-5; [4] But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, [5] to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. 1 Timothy 2:5-6; [5] For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, [6] who gave himself as a ransom for all men the testimony given in its proper time. Hebrews 9:15; [15] For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. Question 11 Exodus 32:33; [33] The LORD replied to Moses, Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book. Deuteronomy 24:16; [16] Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin. John 8:24; [24] Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment. Question 12a Exodus 33:1-3; [33:1] Then the LORD said to Moses, Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, I will give it to your descendants.' [2] I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. [3] Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way. Exodus 23:20-33; [20] See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have 3
4 prepared. [21] Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. [22] If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. [23] My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. [24] Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred stones to pieces. [25] Worship the LORD your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, [26] and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span. [27] I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run. [28] I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. [29] But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. [30] Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land. [31] I will establish your borders from the Red Sea to the Sea of the Philistines, and from the desert to the River. I will hand over to you the people who live in the land and you will drive them out before you. [32] Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods. [33] Do not let them live in your land, or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you. Question 12d 1 John 1:6-9; [6] If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. [7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. [8] If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. [9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. SIXTH DAY: Review Exodus 32:1-33:6 The Golden Calf [32:1] When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him.
