Adath Israel Congregation Jarson Education Center Engaging children and families in Jewish life and learning. Mission Statement The Adath Israel Jarson Education Center is committed to providing our students with Jewish Education and experiences in order that they and their families will be able to integrate and appreciate the roles of G-d, Torah, Israel, Hebrew, Mitzvot, Jewish holidays, prayer, life cycle events, Jewish history, and Jewish culture in their own lives. 6

Parental Brit (Covenant) In order for your children to get the full benefit of their education, we ask for your help in several areas: Please make a commitment to get your children to class on time and with regularity. When children miss class often, they lose momentum, and have trouble keeping up. In order to get the most from their lessons they need to be present. When children arrive late they can miss important projects & information and it can be disruptive to the class. Please read the s we send you. We know you are swamped with news, so we try to keep our updates pertinent and meaningful. A weekly parent bulletin will be sent updating you on activities in the school and any special programs. Please read it so you can fully participate and get the most out of the synagogue and school community. Please accompany your child to Shabbat services, holiday services and other synagogue events. Your involvement in synagogue life is critical to modeling to your children that Jewish activity is not just for children and at religious school but is a lifelong and worthwhile endeavor. Please read about the awards your child can earn with high service attendance on page 16. Children should attend Shabbat services monthly. If you have any problems or concerns, please feel free to contact your child s teacher or the Director of Education before or after class. Your concerns are our concerns and your child s education and development are very important to us. We need to know what your needs and concerns are so that we may address them. Student s Brit (Covenant) Hebrew school and our synagogue is a place where all children deserve to feel safe and to learn, express their opinions, ask questions and receive respect from everyone. Therefore we have high expectations about behavior from every student. We ask all students to commit to the following: Respect Yourself, Respect Others, Respect Your School. Honor people s personal space, property and feelings. Come to class ready to learn. Be kind to each other. The following behavior is not acceptable in our Hebrew school; Teasing or insulting other children. Using verbal aggression or physical violence Repeatedly disrupting class Defacing the building, books or furnishings. 7

Irvin M. Wise Senior Rabbi Pauline Horn Synagogue Administrator Dara L. Wood Director of Education Laura Wright Religious School Board Chairperson OFFICERS: President Gerry Greenberg President-Elect Debbie Lempert Vice Presidents Robert Bardach Mendy Fisher Jack Goodwin John Stillpass Immediate Past President Scott Wolf August 2015 Elul 5775 Dear Parents, Welcome to Adath Israel Congregation s Jarson Education Center for another year of religious school! This handbook is intended to give you the practical information you need to understand how our school operates. It includes school policies, schedules and descriptions of our program. We will continue our parent coffee and breakfast in the lobby on Sunday mornings so I encourage you to stick around to meet and schmooze with other parents after you drop off your children in their rooms. We will continue a mid-morning snack on Sundays morning for the students as well as add our free healthy snack options to our canteen on Wednesdays. This year our opening day of religious school is Sunday, September 20th at 9:00am. That morning is also our 6th and 7th grade parent meeting. All 6th and 7th grade parents (as well as some 5th grade parents if their bar/bat mitzvah is early in the school year) are expected to attend this meeting. In order for your children to get the most out of their experience they need to attend religious school regularly and be on time. I know that life does get busy but the commitment you make now will last your child(ren) throughout their lives in building a strong Jewish identity. You, as parents, are our partners in Jewish education and I welcome your feedback at any time. I know that your input can only help to make our program stronger. I look forward to a great year with your children! L Shalom, Dara L. Wood 8

August 2015 Elul 5775 Irvin M. Wise Senior Rabbi Pauline Horn Synagogue Administrator Dara L. Wood Director of Education OFFICERS: President Gerry Greenberg President-Elect Debbie Lempert Vice Presidents Robert Bardach Mendy Fisher Jack Goodwin John Stillpass Immediate Past President Scott Wolf Dear Families, Maimonides reminds us of the mitzvah to educate to our children and do so in a way to make learning as joyful and loving as possible. This certainly is the goal at our synagogue as we continue to endeavor to provide positive Jewish identity, skills and knowledge to our children. Symbolically, when you enter our school lobby you find a bright, warm and welcoming place. This is our vision and our goal: that our children will find a bright, warm and welcoming place for themselves each individual student appropriate to his or her needs and uniqueness as a child of G-d. Supplemental Jewish education in early 21 st century America is a challenge. It is also a mitzvah that we accept responsibility for fulfilling lovingly and passionately. I look forward, G-d willing, to this being a great year for our children; they should grow, learn and thrive. May our children, you, their parents, families and their teachers be blessed. May all of us go from strength to strength. Shanah tovah: we pray that this will be a year of health, well-being, sustenance, joy and peace for you, your family, all Israel, and all the world. L shalom, Rabbi Irvin M. Wise 9

Adath Israel Religious Schools 10 Master Goals Adath Israel s Religious School is organized around a core of ten master goals. Each teacher uses all or part of these goals in an age appropriate manner when planning their lessons and teaching their classes. Upon graduation students will be able to : Adonai: Understand that the Jewish Triangle consists of G-d, Israel and prayer. Appreciate the mystery of G-d as our unique Creator, Sovereign, Teacher and Judge. Understand a variety of different aspects of G-d. Build their personal relationship with G-d. Torah: Read and understand at an age appropriate level, a variety of Jewish religious texts including the Torah, Midrash, Mishnah, Talmud and Halakah. Yisrael v Zehut (Privilege): Understand the extent of the blessing of the State of Israel that our ancestors lacked. Understand the importance of Israel to the current American Jewish community. Value the privileges and take on the responsibilities of living in our own Jewish community here in Cincinnati. Safah (Language): Understand modern Hebrew and why knowing it is an asset. Mitzvot (Commandments): Understand mitzvot as actions that people are duty-bound to perform and as commandments from G-d. Realize that good Jewish ethical behavior flows from the proper performance and understanding of mitzvot. 11

Mo adim (Special Seasons): Appreciate the meaning of Shabbat and the holidays through exposure to the idea that Jews live their lives according to a rhythm that begins with Rosh Hashanah each fall and continues throughout the entire year. Tefillah (Prayer): Understand that genuine tefillah requires one to develop an inner sense of G-d s presence through mastering Hebrew reading. Be able to explore the different avenues through which one can develop the desire to pray. Machzor Chayyim (Life Cycle): Be familiar with the progression of the Jewish life cycle that begins with birth and ends with death. This includes life events like Bar/Bat Mitzvah and weddings. Appreciate this cycle as a guide to life. Toledot Yisrael (Jewish History): Understand the connection to over four millennia of Jewish history. View themselves as the latest chapter in this Jewish saga of survival that includes astounding triumphs, crushing tragedies and glorious redemption. 15 Supplemental Programs Life Cycle Events March 6, 2016 Phase I: Consecration - Gan (Kindergarten) Phase II: Siddur Dedication - Gimel (Third Grade) The second of our Synagogue Life Cycle Events is the Siddur Dedication Ceremony. Third Grade Students receive their very own Siddur as a gift from Jarson Education Center. The first of our Synagogue Life Cycle Events series, and the highlight for the kindergarten class, as well as new children in first grade, is the Consecration Ceremony. This program is the beginning of the formal transition of our heritage from one generation to another. Preparation for this important first step takes place during Sunday morning classes. Phase III: Torah Induction Ceremony - Daled (Fourth Grade) The third of our Synagogue Life Cycle Events is the Torah Induction Ceremony. The study of the Torah has always been the mainspring of Jewish life. Students will pledge themselves to learning the Torah s messages and to carrying out its precepts. 15

Phase IV: B nai Mitzvah The fourth phase in our significant Synagogue Life Cycle Events is the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. In order to facilitate the planning and preparation for a successful Bar/ Bat Mitzvah observance, we have prepared this list of requirements, standards and procedures. Our purpose is to make the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony a meaningful occasion in the Jewish education of our children and their families and to provide them with the genuine and sincere initiation into their responsibilities as members of the Jewish Community. The date assignment process begins during the calendar year in which a child turns 10 years old. A letter is sent to each family of an eligible child, detailing the criterion for setting your child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah date. The Director of Education can set the date for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah as early as 3 years in advance of the 13 th Hebrew birthday for boys and the12 th Hebrew birthday for girls. To celebrate becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah on Shabbat morning, a Bar/ Bat Mitzvah candidate must have successfully completed five years of study in our Religious School (or in a school acceptable to our Religious Services and Religious School Committees), must be currently enrolled and attend regularly. The program must consist of a minimum of 5.5 hours per week, in addition to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah training. Adherence to the standards outlined in the Synagogue and School Guide will be monitored. Provisions will be made through arrangements with our Rabbi and Director of Education for those youngsters who require special consideration. In the second semester of 6th grade, and the first semester of 7th grade, students attend class Wednesday evening from 5:45-6:15pm with Rabbi Wise, whether they are enrolled at the religious school or Rockwern Academy. Students must attend regularly. It is mandatory for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah candidate to attend our Shabbat Morning services no less than once a month (12 or more times) prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah date. Candidates will have no less than three private meetings with the Rabbi. The parents of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah candidate are responsible for arranging these meetings. Each Bar/Bat Mitzvah candidate is required to choose and carry out an individual tzedakah project and to refer to this mitzvah and the reasons for it in his/her D var Torah. Shabbat afternoon, Monday and Thursday mornings prior to a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the candidate will read from the Torah during services. For the morning services, prompt arrival at 6:45 AM will assure the proper assistance with putting on tallit and tefillin. A family must be current in all Synagogue dues and school fees at least two months prior to the date of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. When the requirements have been met, the observance and celebration of becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah may take place on Shabbat morning. Compliance with these requirements will be monitored by the Religious Services and Religious School Committees. 16

Shabbat Services for Children Some of the most important components of a good Jewish background need more than just study in a classroom. It is essential that our children have regular synagogue experiences on Shabbat that excites and inspires them. Family Service Held each month in the Marcus Chapel, our Family Service for families with newborns through Fifth grade is an interactive Shabbat morning service led by our children and parents. Everyone has an opportunity to participate in a way that is comfortable for them. Children and adults can read Torah, lead prayers, even deliver the dvar Torah! At the conclusion of family service, our families will come into the main sanctuary and help lead our congregation in Adon Olam and enjoy a special Kiddush. Please contact Brett Stern to get your part for our next family service: brettpstern@gmail.com Mini-Minyan (formerly Tot Shabbat) Held each month in the Marcus Chapel, our Mini-Minyan service is a lively and active shabbat morning experience for newborn through five year olds and their families. Shabbat Attendance Rewards Program for all children! After Shabbat morning Services, students should approach the Education Director on the bima to have their attendance posted on the "official" Shabbat attendance list. We will keep track of Shabbat attendance for students in grades K-7th. The students progress will be charted and displayed in the second floor hallway of the Jarson Education Center. We will recognize and give prizes to the student in each grade that attends the most services during the year. There will also be a special gift for those top 3 Shabbat Service attendees during the year! Join us for Family Service on September 5th at 10:30am and for Mini-Minyan on September 12th at 10:30am. 18

Policies everyone should know! Behavior Policy: At the Adath Israel Jarson Education Center, the entire staff works very hard to provide a top quality Jewish education. Students are expected to treat each other, teachers, the Rabbi, Rabbinic Intern and the Director of Education with Kavod (respect). For effective learning to take place and for quality social programs and community activities, a respectful and safe environment is necessary. No student has the right to interfere with the education or safety of another student or faculty member. Students and faculty are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, and to treat each other with dignity and respect at all times. All students are expected to: Respect Yourself, Respect Others, Respect Your School. Honor people's personal space, property and feelings. Come to class ready to learn. Be kind to each other. Turn off and put away cell phones, and any other electronic device before entering class. If any of these are taken out during class time, the device will be given to the teacher and will be returned at the end of the session. Dress appropriately for school. All male students must wear a kippah when in the building. Wearing a kippah is optional for female students. Arrive on time for classes, and remain in the building during school hours. Students may only leave during school hours if a signed note has been received from a parent or guardian and they are signed out in the school office. The use of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco products is strictly prohibited. 19

Kashrut Observance: Adath Israel Synagogue, as a member of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, has a strict policy on food within the synagogue and religious school. Food and drink from outside of the synagogue may not be brought in to the building. Special occasions/ circumstances can, with prior arrangements, be accommodated. In that case, food or drink brought into the synagogue or the school must bear one of these marks or other acceptable markings: For more information about Kashrut, an excellent resource is: Symbols that do not count are these: (These are copyright and trademark codes and not indications of kosher status). A plain K is not an accepted symbol. Absence and Release: Because we only have 5.5 hours a week, every moment of the day counts. Classes begin at 4:15 PM on Wednesday and 9:00 AM on Sunday. Students that arrive after 4:35 on weekdays or after 9:10 on Sunday will need to stop in the office to sign in and get a pass to give to their teacher. This is to help us keep accurate attendance records. In Case of an Absence: JUST LET US KNOW! We do understand that absences do come from time to time. Please call the school office at Otherwise, please send written communication as to the nature of your child s absence. It is the parent s responsibility to get makeup assignments from the student s teacher. In case of early dismissal: Written or verbal communication must be given to the office. Parents must come in to the school office to pick up their child and must sign them out. At that time we will page your student to come meet you. Students will not be allowed to wait in the lobby unattended, parents must park in the parking lot and come in to the office to meet them. Guest Policy: We encourage our students to share Religious School with their friends. Please let us know to expect a visitor, so our staff may be notified. A NOTE IS NECESSARY FROM A PARENT GUARDIAN FOR A VISITOR TO BE ADMITTED. Guests must adhere to the same behavior policy as our students. Kippot: All boys are REQUIRED to wear kippot when ever in the synagogue or school. Wearing kippot for girls is optional, except when on the bima. 20

Canteen: On weekday afternoons before classes begin, our students are able to buy snacks and drinks at our canteen. The profit from the canteen goes towards keeping it in business. Due to the synagogue s Kashrut policy, NO SNACK MAY BE BROUGHT INTO THE SCHOOL unless previous arrangements have been made. You may purchase a canteen pass for your child(ren) to use during the school year. This will be good for up to $1.50 in the canteen for snack, and it helps to support our school. Call the office for information. Progress Reports: Individual Progress Reports will be sent to parents twice during the school year. Our school is dedicated to the development of your child s individual progress. We encourage conferences at anytime with the teacher and/or the Director of Education. Fire and Tornado Drill: Fire and Tornado Safety Procedures are posted in every classroom! Adath Israel Jarson Education Center is regularly inspected by the Amberley Village Fire Department and observes the fire code. Fire drills will be held two times a year. Children are made familiar with emergency regulations in case of fire or tornado. Tikkun Olam: From very early on, students are taught to give Tzedakah, coming from the Hebrew word Tzedak, which means righteous. Each class will adopt one organization for the year and the class Tzedakah will go to that organization. Tzedakah is collected every class session. Traffic: We ask that parents please observe these traffic rules and procedures at arrival time (9:00 AM) and dismissal time (12:30 PM) on Sundays and arrival (4:15 PM) and dismissal (6:15 PM during the week). Cars should enter ONLY off of Ridge Road to drop off and pick up. During school hours this driveway is ONE WAY ONLY! WHEN PICKING UP CHILDREN, PARENTS ARE TO PARK CARS IN THE PARKING LOT, WALK TO THE SCHOOL AND WAIT FOR THEIR STUDENTS IN THE FOYER. We will no longer have the Galbraith Road Door unlocked at drop off and dismissal as requested by the Jewish Federation s Security consultant and Amberley Police, so it will be necessary to always enter off of Ridge Road. Parents can then accompany their children from the foyer to the car. Speeds DO NOT EXCEED 15 MPH. Cars sometimes are driven at high, unsafe speeds through the parking lot. Safety comes first here at Adath Israel Synagogue. There is no parking or entry on the Galbraith street side of the building. Weather Emergency: Announcement of school closings will be broadcast over the local radio and television stations, and an will be sent to all parents on our list. Calls will not be made so if you are in doubt, check TV or Dara before leaving your home. 21
