4 Notes Week of June 5, 2011 Bible Story: Ezra (Nehemiah 8:1-12) Bible Truth: Reading the Bible shows our love for The Jewish people, once held captive in Babylon, had returned to Jerusalem. They had rebuilt the temple and the walls around the city. Now the people told Ezra, scribe and priest, to bring the book of the Law of Moses to read to them. Read Nehemiah 8:1-8. The people gathered in the main square of the city. Ezra opened the book and all the people stood. They showed reverence and respect as they intently listened to the law. While we may not stand each time we read the Bible, especially when we are alone with God, we can still treat the Scriptures with a reverent heart and a holy respect. How long did Ezra read to the people? When is the last time you spent an extended time reading God s Word? Our desire to learn more about God is evidence of our love for Him. The people validated the words of Ezra. They lifted their hands to the Lord. They bowed low and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. What did the Levites do (v. 8)? As a preschool teacher, you are called to enlighten and clarify the words of the Bible to children. God uses you to lay foundations for future spiritual decisions for boys and girls. Read Nehemiah 8:9-12. What did the people do? The law showed them their sin and they were grieved. Nehemiah, the governor, joined Ezra and the Levites in telling the people not to weep or mourn. He encouraged them to find true joy in the Lord. This day, the day of conviction and commitment, was deemed a holy day. Have you been convicted of sin in your own life? True conviction comes from the Holy Spirit, leads us to repentance and peace, and guides us to recognize the joy of our salvation through Jesus Christ. We can celebrate as we study God s Word, learn from it, and teach it to others. Week of June 12, 2011 Bible Story: Noah (Genesis 6:9-10,14-22; 7:1,13-19; 8:1-3,13-20) Bible Truth: Thanking God shows our love for Him. Read Genesis 6:9-10. Noah was a man who lived a life of integrity in his community. He was distinguished from others. Noah walked with Do you reflect a walk with God in your community? Read Genesis 6: God gave a detailed assignment to Noah. God knew exactly what was needed. God said He would bring flood waters upon the earth. God gave Noah specific instructions on who would enter the ark. Read Genesis 6:22. When you receive instructions from the Lord, what is your first response? Noah did everything God asked him to do. Noah did not obey out of fear; he obeyed out of faith. We, too, must do what God asks us to do. We need to obey everything God says. 8 Summer 2011

5 Read Genesis 7:1, God commanded Noah to enter the ark. Noah and his family proceeded as God directed. Wildlife, livestock, crawling animals, and birds also entered the ark. Once everyone was inside, God shut the door. For 40 days and nights the rain fell. Noah and all the inhabitants of the ark were safe. God s plan had been implemented. Read Genesis 8:1-17. The ark floated for days. But God did not forget Noah. He sent a wind and the waters began to recede. Noah did not get ahead of God s direction but waited for God s perfect timing. God told Noah when to leave the ark. Read Genesis 8: What did Noah do after leaving the ark? In building an altar, Noah showed his esteem for God as above anything else. He freely offered thanks to God for his deliverance. Noah acknowledged and honored God with a sacrifice. The account of Noah is a well-known biblical story. As you prepare to teach, pray that God will give you a fresh understanding of His truth in this story. Ask God to guide you in helping babies begin to hear that people can show love to Notes Week of June 19, 2011 Bible Story: elijah (1 Kings 18:1-2,41-46; James 5:17-18) Bible Truth: Talking to God shows our love for Him. Elijah was a prophet to the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the reign of Ahab and his wife, Jezebel. Elijah had told King Ahab no rain would fall until Elijah spoke it (1 Kings 17:1). The famine that the Lord had brought onto the land lasted over three years. In 1 Kings 18:1, the Lord commanded Elijah to go and tell King Ahab that rain would fall again. Read 1 Kings 18: Elijah told King Ahab to eat and drink. Where did Elijah go after delivering this message? On Mount Carmel Elijah had challenged the prophets of Baal. The prophets failed. But God sent fire on the water-soaked offering and showed His power and authority. God established Himself as the true God over Baal. (See 1 Kings 18:2-40.) Elijah ascended the mountain again. Elijah bowed to the ground and began to pray. Even though God had promised to send rain, Elijah prayed and asked for it. Prayer is a way for God to turn His promises into reality. Do you spend time praying for the promises of God to become reality in your life? Do you pray for the preschoolers in your class? We must understand the effectiveness of prayer s power. Elijah ordered his servant to look toward the Mediterranean Sea for rain clouds. How many times did the servant look? On his last trip, the servant saw a small cloud the size of a man s hand. Elijah persevered in his prayer. Read James 5: How do the verses describe Elijah? Do these same words describe you? Elijah was a man with a nature like yours, but he was described as a man of prayer. Elijah s prayers were significant; one man s prayers impacted everyone in the land. Your prayers can impact others as well. God desires for you to become a man or woman of prayer because talking to God is a way you can show love to Babies Leader Guide 9

6 Notes Week of June 26, 2011 Bible Story: Abram (Genesis 12:1-9) Bible Truth: doing what God says shows our love for Him. Read Genesis 12:1-3. God s call of Abram includes a command and a promise. The command of God was specific to Abram. Abram was told to leave his land, his relatives, and his father s house. God made promises to Abram: Abram would be made a great nation, he would be blessed, and he would have a great name in a new land. Three promises were given to the people whom Abram would influence. God promised to bless those who blessed Abram, to curse those who cursed him, and that all people would be blessed because of Abram. Abram did not know where the path of obedience would take him (see Hebrews 11:8); yet he believed God would lead him where he needed to go. Has God ever called you to leave a place where you felt comfortable? What was your response? Read Genesis 12:4-5. Note Abram s response. Abram went. He obeyed. He did what God told him to do. Abram did not have all the answers, yet he obeyed through faith. His obedience was quick and without disagreement. Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran. Read Genesis 12:6-9. Abram traveled through the land of Canaan to Shechem. The Lord spoke to Abram and said He would give this land to Abram s offspring. Abram did not immediately acquire possession of the land but traveled through the land. According to verse 7, what did Abram do after the Lord spoke to him? Abram then moved east of Bethel and pitched his tent. He built another altar to God and worshiped Him there. When the Lord spoke, Abram listened, obeyed, and worshiped. When God speaks to you, do you obey quickly? Delayed obedience is disobedience. Your obedience demonstrates your faith in God and His promises. To obey God is to love Him. Read 1 John 5:3. We can show God that we love Him when we do what He tells us to do. 10 Summer 2011

7 Read the Bible Week of June 5 Levels of Biblical Learning: God God wants people to love Him. Your pleasant facial expressions, soft voice, and loving words can help babies feel loved. These feelings of love can then be linked to showing love to Experiences with the Bible and reading its words also help us relate to How important is the Bible to you? You have a wonderful opportunity to guide babies to love God through the pages of His book. Songs, Bible stories, conversation, and pictures are tools you can use to focus on the Bible and showing God our love. As you open the Bible and turn the pages for a baby to see and touch, say: Thank You, God, for the Bible that tells about You. Bible-Learning Activities Look at the Bible Place the Read to Me Bible for Kids and two other Bibles on the floor. Tuck Bible Markers (Pack) inside each Bible. Encourage a baby to touch the Bibles. Open a Bible to a marker and read the Bible phrase. Talk to baby: Ezra read the Bible. He loved Thank You, God, for the Bible. The Bible helps us learn about You. Stack Rings Place a rocking stack toy, book Nana s Bible (Pack), and the picture Baby and Bible (Pack) on the floor. Encourage a baby as he handles the brightly colored rings. Lay a ring on the book for a baby to discover. Picture-read the book to the baby if his interest holds. Talk to baby: We love God wants us to look at the Bible and learn about Him. Sing and Clap Place Picture Card 1: Ezra (Pack) in the Bible. Hold a baby as you sing the song God Is Good. Clap your hands in time to the music. After a stanza, help the baby find the picture card. When she discovers the card, point to Ezra. Talk to baby: Good for you, Lindsay. You found the picture card. See Ezra. Ezra loved Ezra read the Bible. We can read the Bible, too. Play with a Sand Pail Lay a colorful beach towel on the floor with a pail of large plastic pop beads. Lay a Bible and today s Early Bible Steps page on the towel. Direct a baby s attention to the pail and beads. As the baby plays with the pail and beads, remark that he is growing and learning. Talk to baby: The man in the picture has a Bible. We have a Bible, too. Ezra read the Bible. Thank You, God, that we can read the Bible. We love You,? Did You KNOW? Babies feel special at church when you gently rub or pat their backs and talk to them. Frequently tell them God loves them. Babies love to have your undivided attention, so sit on the floor with them. Sing cheerful songs that include their names and names of family members. Lovingly meet babies physical needs and help them know you care about them.
