I have written about and spoken to you after each of these horrors. I struggle each time to express my sorrow and anger and find words to comfort and give hope. I suggest ways we can work to create more peaceful communities. I feel now as if I m just following a script. Then we ll move on until the next senseless act of mass murder. I wanted to change the script. I began by reading the names of the 49 human beings who were killed. That led me to create the list. Please take a few minutes and read each name. I hope you will all take some meaning from this simple listing and reading of names. This is a very Jewish and human ritual. We know that even when haters and murderers take everything away from us, even branding us with a number, we still have our names. The number 49 does not say enough. Even the statement, worst mass shooting in our history does not convey the magnitude of this outrage. For me, each name tells me that each represents a person, a life a unique individual who had living to do, hopes, struggles, successes and regrets and people whom they loved and who loved them. Last month, Joshua Menack celebrated his Bar Mitzvah. In his sermon he talked about how we might deal with tragedy. He conceded that we can enjoy blessings and avoid many bad things by making good choices as his Torah portion teaches. But then asked, But how about things that you can t control? For instance, child illnesses and cancer? Some things just simply don t make sense; they do not explain why the innocent suffer. For this reason, we need to have the ability to find strength to overcome tragic situations in our lives. Cont d on Page 3
The Shofar / Volume 10, Issue 1 / Page 3 RABBI S MESSAGE from Page 2 After the Orlando massacre, others spoke about strength. They are in good company with Joshua! Upon accepting his Tony award, actor Frank Langella said, "When something bad happens, we have three choices; we let it define us, we let it destroy us, or we let it strengthen us," He concluded, "I urge you Orlando to be strong because I'm standing in a room of the most generous humans on Earth and we will be with you every step of the way." Are we? Are we with the people in Orlando? When Moshe was nearing death, he assured Israel that they are not alone, that God was with them and so too, was Joshua. Moshe charged the people, saying, Chiz ku v im tsu -- Be strong and resolute. He repeats the charge when transferring the mantle of leadership to Joshua. Both God and Israel charge Joshua with the same words as Joshua prepares to lead the people into Canaan. The Torah, Frank Langella and Josh Menack are all correct. Refusing to let tragedy destroy or define us and choosing to be strong is good advice. How can we be strong for Orlando, and for San Bernardino, CA and for Charleston, NC and for Newtown, CT and? Let this latest one have impact. Read the names. Learn some personal information about some of them. Listen to their loved ones being interviewed talking about them. Let it become more real, and yes, more terrible and sad. Then let it inspire you to take some action. No one of us can do it all, but we can do our part. We begin with love. If we acknowledge that whatever specific problems and motivations mass murderers have, it is their hatred that is at the root of their actions. Practicing and teaching tolerance, understanding and love are the best weapons against hate. Begin with your own biases. Toss polite behavior aside and call others out when they malign a group, culture, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Go out of your way to learn about those who are different in some way. (Our third interfaith event is coming up July 19 th.) Right now, there are also any number of ways to let the people of Orlando know that we are with them we are thinking about them and stand with them. The Anti-Defamation League provides one way. Visit adl.org and from the home page, click the large box that says Let s Stand Together. You can add your name to the growing list of people who grieve for the people whose names are listed at the beginning of this article. While on the ADL site, you will find information that empowers us so that we can be strong! Here are but a few: Empowering Children in the Aftermath of Hate Myths & Facts About Islam Understanding Homophobia & How to Be an Ally Murder & Extremism in the U.S. in 2015 The State of Islamic Extremism in 2015 Finding the Balance: Countering Extremism and Combating Stereotypes The psalmist prays, May Adonai grant strength to [God s] people; May Adonai bless [the] people with peace (Ps. 29:11). I believe God will grant this prayer when we refuse to allow hate to go unchallenged. We can realize our highest hopes by empowering ourselves with knowledge that leads us to love and teach love. Rabbi Steve MESSSAGE FROM THE BINGO COMMITTEE As we thank all our volunteers for this past year and the coming year, we cannot forget a group of volunteers, including the kitchen staff, who give of their time every Sunday evening to run Bingo, which is a very major financial support of our temple. They work on a pre-set schedule or step in on-call. Whatever their schedule, they come together faithfully for the benefit of Beth Am Shalom. If they mention they work for Bingo, just shake their hand and say Thank you. They are the silent ones without identity or title.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The Shofar / Volume 10, Issue 1 / Page 4 I am back! Thank you all for the honor of serving this congregation, again. Fran, indeed you are a Woman of Valor. You have led this congregation through many difficult times, always with dignity, displaying love for the congregation for Temple and for the Jewish community. I hope that I can continue the tenure you have set during your years as president. I am counting on your guidance this year. Thank you. Vall, your energy and enthusiasm have infused us with new ideas and goals. Thank you for your hard work, innovation and dedication to Temple and to our community. I hope that you will continue to influence us in a positive direction. David, thank you for keeping the books. Jacky, thank you for your vital record keeping ability. And Shelly, thank you for sticking around and for all you have done for our religious school. Joan and Marvin, both of you have fulfilled so many roles in this Temple. From President to First Lady to Treasurer to Financial VP, you have been depended upon for years and you have always given to us above and beyond. Thank you. And to all committee chairs, Roz and Bill Terzi, Carl and Tama Nelson, Robin Cohen, Bill Freiman, thank you. Fern, Sondra and Lisa, Melanie, Sandy, thank you. To all of our donors; JCASE, Yediday, Friends and Sustaining Members, thank you. Your increased financial support has helped us to reach this day. Now, I am sure that I missed someone. Please know that it was not intentional, just a case of CRS, (Can t Remember Stuff), done to demonstrate that I am anything but perfect. You all know that I grew up in Brooklyn, where there was a Jew in almost every apartment. Not only did I live in a community surrounded by people of my own faith. I also lived surrounded by extended family. We shared life s experiences, good and bad, as well as holidays, both Jewish and secular. Today, I live in a community where within a ten block radius there are about 6 Jewish families, half of whom are unaffiliated. And my extended family, like all God's creatures, they have gone to the four corners of the earth. While I grew up in an Orthodox household, the younger child of American Jewish parents, there were many surprises in store. You see, there was nothing religious in my upbringing, and there still isn t. I am a religious school dropout, and I never became a Bat Mitzvah. In the second grade, while attending yeshiva, my parents took me out for our weekly dose of Chinese food. As I said a Brucha over the spare ribs, mom announced that it was time for me to go to public school. Not making much progress at age 19, a friend offered me a ham sandwich. I was appalled. I asked how he could possibly eat ham, after all it came from a pig. His response was, so do spare ribs. Now that was just not true! Later that night, my dad informed me of the sad reality; indeed I had been eating and enjoying pork for years. I share this because I want you all to know that I am not religious! No more religious than any one of you. But I am a proud Jew, and I believe in the three tenets of Judaism, God, Torah and Zion. I hope that I can conduct myself throughout my presidency holding fast to those values. I hope to inspire all of you to join me and to grow the spiritual nature Necessary for this community to survive. To do that you need to be here. Please join us for the holiest days of the year, Shabbat. Shabbat services take place weekly. If you have young children bring them twice a month, or more, not just for a family service. Teach them about our faith, not only through Religious School and B'nai Mitzvah, but show them what being a part of a congregation is about, a family. We welcome the sounds of children - always. I hope that each of you will join us in Torah Study and learn where our faith comes from, Torah. Connect to our roots, bringing Torah into your life and your heart. In other words, let s become a family by going back to basics, together! Adonai our God Make the words of your Torah sweet to us And to the house of Israel, your People. That we and our children may be lovers of your name And students of your Torah Now, some housekeeping. I hate s. I am in my 60 s and have an aversion to texting. Call me. Talk to me. Let s share ideas and get things done. Let s continue to make this a Congregation of Excellence and enlarge our community. Thank you again for the honor of serving this great community. Pam Ligorski President
The Shofar / Volume 10, Issue 1 / Page 5 RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Rabbi s Cell Phone: (732) July Birthdays: Yom Wholedit Samayach Happy Birthday to: Phillip Bell, 8 Av**Marlee Card, 11 Av**Maxwell Goldman, 1 Av Kenneth Hankins, 7 Tammuz**Morgan Mako, 6 Av**Michael Manekas, 5 Tammuz Alexander Tobolsky, 22 Tammuz**Joshua Wishnick, 29 Sivan**Lila Witkin, 20 Tammuz Many thanks to those of you who continue to support our Religious School with your generous donations. Enjoy your summers! Shelly Newman & Michelle Goldman Religious School Co-Chairs Dear Fellow Members, As a member Beth Am Shalom, I am volunteering to assist some of our children with their studies in reading. I began my career as an English/reading teacher in 1964 in grades 7, 8 and 9, and later as an elementary school Principal of grades pre-k though 6 th in the New York City school system. If the student is aware of his needs, I can prepare lessons to address those needs. If not, I would prepare a grade-level inventory to determine reading skills in which the student lacks or has a weakness. While this is taking place, I would also do a bookinterest inventory and try to obtain books of interest to him/her on his/her ability level. Other skills I can build on include listening to find the main idea and note details and listening to determine sequence. I would work on speaking skills with the use of experience charts. I am most concerned with motivating students to read on their own. We could share reading a newspaper and discuss the sports or movie sections. I might use my Archie Reading Kit and have them complete some of the exercises after reading some of the comic books in the kits. There are also hundreds of games the students would enjoy while improving their reading skills. The reading session can be held at the temple and could last from 30 minutes to one hour, one or two days a week. Please contact Barbara at the temple office if you would like to set up an appointment. I look forward to working with our youngsters. Summer is a great time to sharpen reading skills. Respectfully, Lester Kostick
The Shofar / Volume 10, Issue 1 / Page 6 SISTERHOOD On May 26 th, Sisterhood held its annual Mahjongg and Card Party. One hundred eighteen women enjoyed playing, winning prizes, and eating delicious food and scrumptious desserts. We are very grateful to these women who attend our event year after year and contribute generously for the benefit of our Temple. We could not successfully run this event without the help of our shoppers, schleppers, and servers. Many thanks to Fern Frankenberg, Les Kostick, Sondra Ranoff, Sonny Wallace, Robin Cohen, Fran Gimpel, Judy Lefsky, Fischel Myers and Fran Cohen. Special thanks to our schleppers Mike Philips and Lucjen. And of course our thoughts and prayers and thanks go to our own Barbara Hankins who is always there for us for whatever we need. If I have overlooked mentioning anyone I sincerely apologize. You can blame it on my feeble mind. Susan Kostick Women of BAS Book Club The next meeting of the Women of BAS Book Club will be held on Wednesday, July 27 th at 7:15PM We will be discussing Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger MEN S CLUB The Men s Club. Who are they? What do they do? The Men s Club is that group of gentlemen who meet once a month, share lox, bagels and coffee and spend a little over an hour trying to decide how to serve you, the Congregation of Beth Am Shalom. Whether it s replacing batteries in the defibrillator, putting up the Sukkah, assisting Temple by paying for an unexpected service or anything else that may arise, the Men s Club is always there. We are always ready to do what needs to be done. Please consider this when we sell tickets to a dinner/dance fundraiser, ticket vouchers to a Blue Claws game or a raffle ticket with first prize being a year of free dues. Are your children in Religious School? Have they graduated in the last few years? Please consider joining the Men s Club. Take part in the work that we do. Have a say in helping us to help Temple. Past Presidents, such as Marvin Weiss, have set a pretty high bar in terms of accomplishment. As the incoming President, I look forward to maintaining that standard. Please join us on the third Sunday of the month for a nice breakfast and informative morning. Thank you. Richard Eisenstein President The Men s Club s main purpose is to help and assist Beth Am Shalom and to foster goodwill and friendship among its members. Initial annual membership is free. Thereafter, dues are $36 per fiscal year which starts on July 1 and ends on June 30 of the following year.
