The CRC is the public affairs arm of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio. The CRC has five principal purposes. The CRC: Addresses issues related to anti- Semitism Fosters relationship between the Jewish community and other groups representing religious, ethnic, racial, and national communities in the San Antonio area Fosters support throughout the community for the State of Israel and its right to exist in peace and security Develops and articulates public positions on issues affecting the Jewish Community something concrete, Yehuda Teichtal, a rabbi in Berlin s Jewish community and executive director of Chabad Lubavitch Berlin, said as he announced the June 10 groundbreaking ceremony for the Jewish center. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is expected to attend the ceremony. When construction is completed in about two years, the Pears Jewish Campus, adjacent to the Chabad Jewish Education Center, will house a school for up to 500 pupils, a gym, library and event spaces. It is expected to cost about 18 million euro, or about $21 million, of which two-thirds has been secured, Teichtal said. 5 YOUR FEDERATION DOLLARS AT WORK Idea Slam preps YAD participants for Inaugural Gefilte Fish Tank Federation s Young Adult Division (YAD) and JNET hosted an Idea Slam with guest speaker Richard Seline on Sunday, May 6. Twentytwo participants gathered at The Impact Guild in the Beacon Hill neighborhood to brainstorm ideas and share feedback on what the future of our Jewish community could look like in San Antonio. Many participants are applying for micro-grants through the new YAD initiative, the Gefilte Fish Tank. Anyone, anywhere with an idea to enhance Jewish life in San Antonio can apply online by May 25. After reviewing the proposals, the YAD Board will invite a few applicants to pitch their idea live at the Gefilte Fish Tank on Sunday, June 10. To learn more and apply visit www. gefiltefishtank.com or contact Eva Laporte, JFSA s Director of Women s Philanthropy & the Young Adult Division at Author Jack Sacco, center, with Holocaust survivors Ana Rado, left, and Susanne Jalnos, right. After Jack s presentation, Jalnos connected some dots and made quite a discovery. Read below for more details. Son of Dachau liberator shares father s story: Farm boy to hero San Antonio Jewish Senior Services (SAJSS), in partnership with the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio (HMMSA), hosted Pulitzer Prize-nominated author Jack Sacco on April 22. He spoke about his father s journey from an Alabama farm boy to a liberator of the Dachau Concentration Camp, as detailed in his book, Where the Birds Never Sing. Sacco spoke to an audience of 120, followed by a Q&A session. HMMSA extended hours to include Sacco s book signing, along with a special exhibit of items from the children of liberators. The audience included WWII veterans and Holocaust survivors Rose Williams, and sisters Anna Rado and Susanne Jalnos. Survivors were gifted signed copies of Sacco s book, which lead to a discovery. I had always wondered which army liberated me, because I never knew, said Jalnos. And I m reading Jack s book, and I see a map of the route the 92nd Signal Battalion (Jack s father) took on the way to Dachau. It was them. They liberated me on April 1, We were three days into a five-day march, we were being taken to Bergen-Belsen. I recognize the town on the map. It was them. 6 YOUR FEDERATION DOLLARS AT SPOTLIGHT ON... Marcia Goren Weser (Source of Light) Center at University Presbyterian Church (an interfaith group devoted to adult learning informed by faith ) is particularly rewarding thanks to Rabbi Sam Stahl s encouragement. This group, led by Dr. Dhawn Martin, embrace my hope for shalom: peace and wholeness in this world. I am a native Houstonian, grew up at Congregation Beth Yeshurun where I was the second Bat Mitzvah (three years after the first, who was Rabbi William Malev s daughter). I was a charter member of Joe Reichman BBG; served as a Texoma Regional officer; at 16, I won a scholarship to B nai B rith Youth Organization s Israel Summer Institute. Elected president of International B nai B rith Girls during my freshman year in Plan II at the University of Texas, Austin, I balanced studies with travel and speaking engagements across the country. SAN ANTONIO: I came here in 1974 as a single mother with two young daughters, to work at a Model Cities program, Creative Arts of San Antonio. Located across from Our Lady of the Lake University, CASA provided art classes for children and adults John S. Troy LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT MEMBER A.S.L.A nearby. Later I taught studio art and art history at St. Mary s Hall; began an outreach program for the Witte Museum and became Curator of Education at the San Antonio Museum Association; and wrote a weekly column as art critic for the San Antonio Light newspaper. Through these jobs and my joining Temple Beth- El, I became involved in the Jewish community: teaching Hebrew, organizing Sisterhood study and services, later becoming the 3rd woman elected Temple President since its founding in I chaired the Journal s editorial board and JCC book fair; helped organize the Federation s business and professional women s group; worked on all the Federation s Yom Limmud (Day of Learning) programs. It was an opportunity to work with people from all streams of Judaism in a common goal of ensuring life-long Jewish learning. Clergy and laity in Jewish San Antonio were very close then, regardless of our backgrounds or affiliations. STRONGEST JEWISH MEMORIES: Attending Shabbat services with my maternal grandfather as a child studying Hebrew under the stern tutelage of Mr. Greenfield beginning at age seven reading Torah with Rabbi Jake Jacofsky s tallit around my shoulders at URJ s Scheidt Seminar studying Tanach and midrash with Temple Chai s Women s Torah Study group celebrating the 60th anniversary of my Bat Mitzvah guided by Rabbi David Komerofsky reciting Torah blessings at my grandson s Bar Mitzvah and watching my granddaughters Chicago Bagel & Deli WE LOVE MAKING BAGELS FOR PEOPLE WHO KNOW BAGELS Wurzbach & Vance Jackson Monday-Friday 6am-3pm Saturday 7am-3pm Sunday 7am-2pm G Like us on Facebook! preparing for theirs... MOST REWARDING VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES: Being one of the Founders of Temple Chai in 2005: starting a small synagogue devoted to learning and service in a nurturing environment was arduous and all-consuming but worth every minute. How thrilling to watch new leaders emerge as Temple Chai grows into adulthood in its B nai Mitzvah year! Working on the Board of Gemini Ink to bring literacy love of reading and writing to underserved groups in the city, and last year s stint as a mentor to a young teacher in the City Year program, were special. We have lost the sense that there really is enough for everyone. Fear or jealousy has no place here. We must be willing to tell the truth, to listen, to disagree, and to engage with each other. We are all created b tzelem Elohim, in the image of god. We must honor all who give Time and Talent, not just Treasure, to our community. 20 IN THE COMMUNITY: COLLEGE President Fenves shares his family s story at Texas Hillel On Wednesday, April 25, Texas Hillel and the University of Texas White Rose Society, a Holocaust remembrance and genocide awareness group, hosted President Gregory Fenves as this year s keynote speaker for the annual 10,000 Roses program. In November 2017, President Fenves was given the Guardian of the Human Spirit Award by Holocaust Museum Houston, and for the first time in a public forum, shared his father s story of surviving Auschwitz and emigrating to America. Texas Hill students reached out to President Fenves soon after and invited him to share the story at Texas Hillel, as part of a series of programs connected to Yom HaShoah. In front of a packed house of students and community members, President Fenves told his family s story, including their life in Hungary before World War II, his father s experience surviving Auschwitz, the trauma of losing family and one s home, his eventual move to America, and how these experiences have impacted him and his family. A student leader led an interview-style Q & A session after, speaking more about how President Fenves family story impacts his role as UT President, and about Holocaust education and awareness in today s world. At the start of his talk, President Fenves chose to move away from the formal podium and microphone stand, sharing that unlike University of Texas at Austin President Gregory Fenves with students from Texas Hillel most of the speeches he gives, this was personal, and about family. At the conclusion of his remarks the students gave President Fenves a standing ovation. DON T MISS YOUR JOURNAL! CRC continued from page 1 the CRC know. The CRC keeps track of anti-semitic acts in the area and has tools to address these issues as they arise. The CRC sponsors programs and engages with different groups that are part of the larger San Antonio community. We cannot live on an island. We are part of a larger community. By sharing and learning from other groups, we establish bonds of trust and understanding that allow us to work better with each other when issues arise that affect our San Antonio community. We advocate for public positions affecting the Jewish community. For example, last year we participated in Jewish Communities day at the Texas Legislature and advocated to our legislators regarding anti-bds legislation pending in both houses. Other CRCs in the State of Texas advocated on additional issues, such as ensuring that funds for important social services, like our Jewish Family Service, were not cut in the budget process. Last month, Ellen Ollervidez, our CRC Director, and I attended the annual conference of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs ( JCPA ), the national organization for all CRCs. We participated in sessions ranging from domestic issues such as the effects of mass incarceration on our society to international issues such as civil society efforts to foster peace in Israel. A lot of time was devoted to dealing with polarized communities. How do we reach consensus in our own community and make sure everyone feels they have a stake? The sessions were enlightening and inspiring. Our session about civil society efforts to foster peace in Israel led to an exciting moment at the conference. We learned that even though the conditions right now may not be conducive to peace, thousands of people and organizations are making efforts to bring Israelis and the Arab community together. By bringing in particular the youth together, we can break down barriers that lead to hate. Currently pending in the U.S. House of Representatives is H.R. 21, a bi-partisan bill that seeks to form an independent International Fund for Israeli-Palestinian Peace, to promote and support contact, cooperation, dialogue, shared community building, peaceful coexistence, joint economic development, and reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians. While various Jewish organization have been working to move that legislation along, the legislation is not moving quickly. During the business part of the conference meeting where JCPA votes on resolution, a motion was made to approve a resolution that had not been on the schedule. After hearing the talk earlier in the day, the Orthodox Union and the Union for Reform Judaism brought forth a resolution for the JCPA to support HR The joke was that these two organizations do not always agree on everything, but here was a place where they had found consensus, and we needed to act where we had consensus. The hope is not only that JCPA would advocate for the bill at the national level but that the local CRCs could help with lobbying home state senators and congresspeople to push this bill forward. The resolution was approved. We have the opportunity to make the world a better place for all, Jews and non- Jews alike. Ellen and I came out of this conference with the excitement our CRC is one place where we as a Jewish Community can make a difference in this world. The future is bright when we focus on what binds us and do not let our differences stop us from making real progress. If you are interested in participating in the CRC, please call or Ellen at (210) or ollervideze@jfsatx.org. THE JEWISH JOURNAL A publication of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio JUNE/JULY

24 PERSPECTIVE At Issue: Nazis on the Ballot By the end of the 20th century, it had become unacceptable to fulminate against an international Jewish conspiracy, as Charles Coughlin did in his popular radio broadcasts of the 1930s. The anti-semitic diatribes that Henry Ford published in his newspaper the Dearborn Independent and distributed for free at Ford dealerships had become an ugly embarrassment to the tycoon s descendants. Charles Lindbergh s reputation as a pioneer aviator had become tarnished by his Nazi sympathies. Judeophobia in the United States went underground, sustaining itself with driblets of venom left over from earlier banquets of bigotry. Overt anti-semitism became the pathology of clownish extremists such as David Duke and Louis Farrakhan. However, anti- Semitism has again gone as mainstream as the Mississippi. Voters in the 3rd Perspective: STEVEN G. KELLMAN Congressional District of Illinois will find Arthur Jones on their ballots in November. A former leader of the American Nazi Party, Jones, who calls the Holocaust the biggest, blackest lie in history, is the official nominee of the Republican Party. Because he ran in the March primary unopposed, Jones secured the party s imprimatur. Both the Illinois Republican Party and the Republican National Committee have since repudiated him, but Jones remains on the ballot as the Republican candidate. One reason Jones gave for supporting Donald Trump in 2016 was: I like the fact that he doesn t have to go hat in hand to Jewish billionaires to get money. He now dismisses Trump as a Jew-loving fool who has surrounded himself with hordes of Jews. It is unlikely that hordes of voters will send Jones, who lost seven previous elections, to Congress, since the district is heavily Democratic. However, it is disturbing that the Grand Old Party s candidate is a rabid anti- Semite. A similar development is possible in Wisconsin s 1st Congressional District. One of the most prominent Republicans running to replace retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan is Paul Nehlen, whose vicious tweets include: Poop, incest, and pedophilia. Why are those common themes repeated so often with Jews? When Nehlen opposed Ryan in the Republican primary in 2016, he lost 84%-16%, though he was endorsed by Steve Bannon, Sarah Palin, and Donald Trump. The district is usually red, but it will not be known before Wisconsin s August 14 primary whether Nehlen, like Jones, will be an official Republican candidate. It is possible that an anti- Semite whose aim is to make America free from Jews could slip into the United States Senate from California. Under the state s nonpartisan electoral system, all candidates compete in an open primary. The two highest votegetters proceed to the general election. Polls indicate that, at the moment, Democratic incumbent Diane Feinstein is leading with 39% support, but Patrick Little, who tweeted that: No man in history saved more Jewish lives than Adolf Hitler, leads all other Republicans with 19%. Though Little is unlikely to win a general election in California, his candidacy endows bigotry with the aura of normalcy. Steven G. Kellman is a professor of comparative literature at UTSA. 26 British Muslim group denounces anti-semitism in full page newspaper ad (JTA) Muslim leaders took out a full-page ad in a major British newspaper condemning anti-semitism. We understand that many in our country empathize with the Palestinians and their right to a sovereign state, said the May 17 ad in the Telegraph, a national broadsheet, and signed by a group called Muslims Against Anti-Semitism. However, we must be ever vigilant against those who cynically use international issues to vilify Jews or promote anti-semitic tropes. The ad was signed by the leaders of groups including Faith Matters, a Muslim anti-extremism group; the Association of British Muslims, and Tell MAMA, a clearinghouse for complaints about anti-muslim attacks. The Board of Deputies of British Jews praised the ad on Twitter. Incredible solidarity a full-page ad by Muslim sisters & brothers in today it said. Thank you. Together we will defeat the twin evils of antisemitism & anti-muslim hate. The Board of Deputies had joined Tell MAMA in condemning Islamaphobia, when that group on May 8 rolled out a report on anti-muslim bias in Britain. The Campaign Against Anti-Semitism and Faith Matters joined in calling on Britain s Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, to ban a parade planned in London this month because it will include flags of the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah, the Evening Standard reported. The parade was planned for Quds Day on June 10, when Iran s theocracy has called on followers to condemn Israel s capture of eastern Jerusalem in Hezbollah is an ally of the Iranian regime. Quds day, the Jewish and Muslim groups said, is a rallying point for anti-muslim bigots who wish to portray all British Muslims as terrorist sympathizers, and for anti-semites, who admire Hezbollah s stated mission to seek out and murder Jews around Jewish the Journal world. - January 2014 U.S. & WORLD / FROM THE COVER BERLIN, continued from page 1 Jewish elementary school this fall, and Berlin s traditional Frankeluefer Synagogue recently announced plans for a new Jewish community center on the site of its historical building, which was destroyed in Berlin has some 10,000 affiliated Jews. Anecdotally, there are at least twice as many more who are not affiliated, including about 10,000 Israelis. In all, Germany s Jewish population is about 200,000, of whom about half are affiliated with Jewish communities. Most came from the former Soviet Union after 1990, and not all are Jewish according to halacha, or religious law; the latter are not able to join communities under the umbrella of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. Teichtal said the Pears Jewish Campus is designed to serve Jews across the country, and he said it will be open to all. Boarding facilities will accommodate students from outside Berlin. There will also be adult education programs. Architect Sergei Tchoban donated his design of a bean-shaped structure with a footprint of 7,000 square meters and a height of some six stories. Its partially blue surface will symbolize Jewish themes, from the Israeli flag to the colors of the tallit, or prayer shawl. With the new center we want to set a signal: If you build, you are showing trust, Teichtal said. We know that trust has to be nurtured, nourished and supported We are opening our hands and saying that there is a future here for Jewish people, too. 27 MAZAL TOV Noah Jacob Sutin Bar Mitzvah Noah Jacob Sutin will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Friday, June 8 and Saturday, June 9 at Temple Beth-El. Noah is the son of Miranda and Joshua Sutin and the brother of Benjamin, Naomi and Ari. He is the grandson of Janet Bazemore of San Antonio, Malka and Jonathan Sutin of Albuquerque, and Randy and Barbara Wisener of Dallas. Noah is a rising 8th grader at Alamo Heights Junior School where he plays on the tennis and soccer teams and is a member of National Junior Honor Society. For his Mitzvah project, Noah worked as a USSF soccer referee and donated his earnings to the International Rescue Committee. to reflect on the fun things they have learned and also the tremendous CEO, from page 1 growth they have accomplished. I too like to engage with a similar activity at the office with my many paper files and folders. This enables me to physically clean up my office space and also mentally clean up the year past and reflect on the legacy of the work done by the Jewish Federation of San Antonio. This past year was unique in that we hosted two big events, the 2018 For Hope For Humanity benefit for the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio and the Shin-Dig SA, the Jewish community s Tricentennial celebration. I also reflect on those individuals from our community whom we lost this past year and the legacies they have left. Individuals like Charles Sugerman and Phyllis Braverman who volunteered passionately of their time and financial resources to grow and strengthen our Jewish community. May their memories forever be a blessing to their families and others. We are so fortunate to have their legacies in our community and to be strengthened now by the work they accomplished in their lifetimes. Later this year the Jewish Federation of San Antonio will be initiating a new program called Life & Legacy. This program strives to create legacy gifts for our local Jewish agencies and congregations that will enable the traditions and work of our Jewish community to be secured into the future. Please stay tuned for more information and do not hesitate to reach out to me at the Federation office to learn more. BAR MITZVAH TRADITION my name is Available!
