1 The Synagogue of Satan By Jim Sayles In the Lord s message to the seven churches (Revelation 2 and 3) the Philadelphian church, the church of brotherly love, is the only church to receive the promise that they will be kept from the hour of temptation that will come on the whole world... Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from (being tested and harmed by) the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Revelation 3:10 KJV (insert and emphasis is the author s) The content of the rest of the message in the Revelation of Jesus Christ reveals that the hour of temptation being referenced here includes all of the events of the 7 th seal after the Antichrist has declared himself to be both God and Messiah. This is the same hour of 3.5 years or 42 prophetic months that the beast and the ten kings are given to rule and reign as recorded in Revelation 17:12. The temptation during this final 3.5 years before the return of the Lord is to worship the Antichrist as God and Messiah, and it is this temptation that will try and test all mankind at that time. But the promise for the end time Philadelphian church, persecuted during the 5 th and 6 th seals of Revelation, is that they will not experience this 7 th seal trial or hour of temptation like the rest of mankind even though they will still be present in the world, which has been a great mystery, and the source of a great deal of false doctrine, up until now. 1

2 It is obvious that the entire body of Christ from the first Pentecost forward has escaped this specific hour of temptation up to this point. Therefore, the promise of Revelation 3:7-10 only applies to those who will qualify as being Philadelphian believers at that specific time, believers who have remained faithful during extreme persecution by some future synagogue of Satan during the 5 th and 6 th seals of Revelation. Yet, dispensationalists, already fully engaged in the deceptions of the Spirit of Antichrist, make the claim that this promise made only to a Philadelphian church that has undergone persecution by the metaphorical synagogue of Satan immediately prior to the opening of the 7 th seal now belongs to the universal church who have NOT met the conditions of this promise. On page 106 of Charting End Times, dispensational author, Dr. Tim LaHaye, gives his succinct synopsis of the pre-trib rapture theory as follows: 1. The Pre-Tribulation View - Christ comes in fulfillment of His own promise in Revelation 3:10 to keep His church from the hour of temptation which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth (KJV). This is the prevailing view and the one held by the authors of this book. It is interesting that he should pick this particular distinctive of the pre-trib rapture theory as his prima facie evidence. He has already stated that the Lord will be coming back for a defeated, worldly, lukewarm church, the church that He threatens to spew out of his mouth, the church that has blended truth with error, the church from which there will be a massive apostasy of foolish virgins too horrible to imagine, and the reason the Lord is coming back to carry this sorry excuse for a church back to His father s house in glory is His promise to the Philadelphian church, the church that exemplified His unity, His glory, and His love. Is he serious? LaHaye s explanation for this convoluted argument is that the literal Philadelphian church no longer exists and that this promise to a now nonexistent church is, therefore, a promise to the universal church. Readers poring over LaHaye s book in a stupor of reverential awe could not possibly miss this, but they do. The promise was made to a literal church at the time of John s revelation, and it was given to them and no other church existing at the time, because of their extreme faithfulness in a time of persecution by the Jewish synagogue from which they defected. 2

3 Not even the church at Smyrna, for whom the Lord had no criticisms, received this promise. It follows then that if the promise did not apply to any of the other six literal churches at the time, then it would not apply to any of the six other types of church present at the beginning of the hour of trial that will come upon the whole world, much less to the universal church that primarily exhibits the characteristics of the Laodicean and Sardis churches. The fact that there were more than seven churches in existence at the time of this prophetic utterance by the Lord indicates that the weight of the message, though it did apply specifically to those seven literal churches at that time, was made primarily and prophetically to seven characteristic types of the church throughout the ages just as LaHaye correctly claims. The promise, then, is to the Philadelphian type of church and believer.. The Laodicean church (LaHaye s universal church ), though, is in deep trouble. They have no such promise. Likewise, the promise that those who qualify as Philadelphian believers immediately prior to the opening of the 7 th seal will be kept from the temptation (of strong delusion) that will test the whole world is NOT a promise that they will escape the 5 th and 6 th seals identified by the Lord as tribulation. In this exclusive promise to the Philadelphian believers who have endured and persevered tribulation by the end time synagogue of Satan, the word keep (Strong s G2334) is given the following meaning by Vines: I. to attend to carefully, take care of A. to guard B. metaph. to keep, one in the state in which he is C. to observe D. to reserve: to undergo something Keep in this sense obviously does not indicate removal as falsely claimed by the rapture cultists. Instead, the idea is that of protecting and preserving without removal in exactly the same way that the three Hebrew children, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were protected IN the fiery furnace after refusing to worship Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, as god, which was the same temptation that will be experienced by the whole world during the 7 th seal. This is, therefore, a perfect OT parallel and foreshadowing of the event that will be experienced by those qualifying as end time Philadelphian believers. For that first Philadelphian church the synagogue of Satan that persecuted them was merely the synagogue from which the Philadelphian believers had 3

4 defected. And that synagogue, like all other synagogues from the resurrection of Jesus Christ forward, have had Satan as their father. (John 8:42-44) This statement is not anti-semitic. I have the same affinity that other true Christians have for the ethnic brothers and sisters of Jesus of Nazareth, and for the state of Israel. But I am not deceived about the current status of Judaism. We want to believe, as dispensationalists and all dual covenant theologians do, that religious Jews are God s people in waiting and that they worship the same Father that we worship. Yet, the reality revealed in scripture by the Spirit of Truth is that Judaism, in complete denial that the Father has already sent the Son in the flesh to redeem all Israel, is DESOLATE. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth (both) the Father and the Son. I John 2:22 KJV (insert is the author s) Note that John tells us the denial of Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ, the Messiah, is a denial of both the Father and the Son, and that Judaism, the legitimate worship of the Father up until the death and resurrection of the Son, is now devoid of legitimacy and is, instead, an expression of the Spirit of Antichrist. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist 1 John 4:3 KJV (emphasis is the author s) How, then, do we legitimize Judaism as being a sister faith or ethnic Jews as God s people in waiting? It is the religious Jews of Israel, currently represented by the Israel Faithful and Temple Mount Movement, who, in complete denial of both the Father and the Son, will rebuild the temple in unknowing obedience to their father, Satan. And it is these end time religious Jews about whom the Lord prophesied: I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. John 5:43 KJV Those religious Jews who receive the Antichrist as God and Messiah will be the final form of the synagogue of Satan. But the identification of the original end time form of the synagogue of Satan referenced in Revelation 3:9 as being those who say they are Jews but are not, those who will persecute the end time 4

5 Philadelphian church during the 5 th and 6 th seals, is even more sinister and disturbing to us than the abovementioned final form. The identification of this synagogue of Satan as being those who say they are Jews but are not has nothing whatsoever to do with their ethnicity. The Revelation of Jesus Christ was given to John long after the Lord had instructed Paul that one is NOT a Jew as far as the covenant is concerned if one is racially a Jew and circumcised only in the flesh. Instead, one is only a Jew as far as the covenant is concerned if one is circumcised in the heart. For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Romans 2:28,29 KJV The synagogue of Satan that persecuted the original Philadelphian church were ethnic Jews claiming covenant status with God that they did not have, and the synagogue of Satan that will persecute the end time church during the 5 th and 6 th seal events will be those who say they are spiritual Jews but are not, those who profess faith in Jesus Christ, but are following another god. These are the apostate foolish virgins who, during that time identified by the Lord as tribulation, (5 th and 6 th seals of Revelation), fail to repent as directed by the Lord and begin to follow the false, demonically empowered, prophets of the Harlot and her daughters. Our identification of this end time Harlot and her daughters (also metaphorically identified as those who say they are spiritual Jews but are not) is easy. One is a spiritual harlot only when one is, or has been, in a covenant relationship with God and then commits spiritual harlotry by giving heed to and obeying or worshipping another god. The example specifically given to us in scripture were God s covenant people, Israel, from Moses forward, who, after having received and ratified the Law, were frequently rebuked by the prophets of God for their harlotry when they compromised their worship of the Father through the syncretic worship of other gods. THE end time Harlot, and the end time synagogue of Satan, then, are both metaphors for the apostate church, claiming the covenant name of Christ, but not experiencing either His presence or His power, having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof (2 Timothy 3;5 KJV) 5

6 It is the age old Jezebel spirit, the religious Luciferian prince answering only to Satan himself, who will empower the prophets of the end time Harlot church a.k.a. the synagogue of Satan and persecute those wise virgins who have remained faithful to Christ. The reformers of the sixteenth century, having broken away from the Roman Catholic Church, identified the Harlot of Revelation as the apostate Roman Catholic Church of their own day, and, if I had been alive at that time I would likely have reached that same conclusion. But from God s point of view the end time Harlot can only be a form of that which He has covenanted to Himself through the Son, which has become unfaithful and apostate. Therefore, THE end time Harlot, will be an apostate form of Christianity that includes both Roman Catholicism and her protestant daughters. This is also the woman dressed in scarlet as she rides on the back of a one world government. (Revelation 17) Her daughters, then, would not only be those forms apostate orthodoxy that closely resemble the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church but the entirety of apostate nominal Christian denominations that have splintered off from the mother church and from each other. Therefore, the Harlot and her daughters are identified as the foolish virgins of the awakened church who refuse to repent as commanded in Revelation 2 and 3 and ultimately reject their faith in Jesus Christ through extreme deception by false prophets. For such men are false apostles [spurious, counterfeits], deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles (special messengers) of Christ (the Messiah). And it is no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light; So it is not surprising if his servants also masquerade as ministers of righteousness. [But] their end will correspond with their deeds. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 Amplified The Harlot also includes nominal Christians who have never had a covenant relationship with the Father in Christ and all those of various Luciferian religions who will also be deceived by the demonically empowered false prophets of the end time apostate church and come under the Harlot s ecumenical umbrella. But the Roman Catholic Church is not, yet, the Harlot. That identification will not take place until after the awakening of the entire church identified in the parable of the ten virgins as the groomsman s announcement, Behold! The bridegroom is coming. 6

7 It is at that time that the wise virgins of the true church will begin to come out of the organized, institutional church in all its forms and denominations in response to the Lord s instructions in Revelation 2 and 3. But the foolish will continue to identify with the organized, institutional, unrepentant church in denial of the Lord s primary end time warning, Do not be deceived. This division will be totally unlike the current division of the somnolent body of Christ. The wise will be united by the Spirit in the absolute, immutable, revelatory (rhema) truth of God, and the foolish who have become apostate will be united against the wise in the strong delusion that overcomes all those who do not love the truth. There is, then, no identifiable denomination of organized, institutional Christianity, including those claiming to be non-denominational, who will not ultimately be participants in the Harlot and her daughters, and it is this Harlot who is also identified as the synagogue of Satan, made up of those apostate former believers who say they are spiritual Jews but are not, who will persecute the wise virgins of the true church during the 5 th and 6 th seal events as recorded in the revelation of Jesus Christ and elsewhere. And it is the wise virgins of the end time Philadelphian church, persecuted by this synagogue of Satan to whom the promise of Revelation 3:10 will belong. Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Revelation 3:10 KJV There it is, then, the foolish virgins of apostate Christianity will betray and persecute the true body of Christ, the wise virgins, during the 5 th and 6 th seals of tribulation, but those wise virgins who endure and persevere this persecution and deception by the synagogue of Satan will ultimately receive the promise given to the Philadelphian church. 8 This entire end time scenario has been prophesied synoptically to the church in Matthew 24:9-14 Amplified (inserts and emphasis are the author s) Then (during the 5 th seal) they will hand you (My awakened church) over to suffer affliction and tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for My name s sake. And then many (of My people) will be offended and repelled and will begin to distrust and desert [Him Whom they ought to trust and obey] and will stumble and fall away and betray one another and pursue one another with hatred. And many false prophets (among them) will rise up and deceive and lead many (of the foolish) into error. And the love of the great body of (My) people will grow cold because of the multiplied lawlessness and iniquity, but he who endures to the end (of the 6 th seal) will be saved (the metaphorical 144,000 of the Israel of God who are sealed and redeemed as firstfruits unto God and the Lamb, but not removed from the earth).( See Revelation 7:1-8) And this good news of the kingdom (the Gospel) will be preached throughout the whole world (by the metaphorical 144,000 sealed and redeemed wise virgins of the end time Philadelphian church a.k.a. the Israel of God ) as a testimony to all the nations, (the multitude, an uncountable number from every nation, tribe, and tongue) and then will come the end (at the 7 th trumpet of the 7 th seal).
