Rabbi Weintraub is Rabbinic Director of the National Center for Jewish Healing and the Jewish Board of Family and Children s Services ( Purim Torah I: True Bulletin Bloopers These announcements, with hilarious typos and phrasing blunders, were reportedly found in various shul newsletters and bulletins around the country. Even the spellchecker wouldn't have helped! 1. Don't let worry kill you. Let your synagogue help. Join us for our Oneg after services. Prayer and medication to follow. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our congregation. 2. For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. 3. We are pleased to announce the birth of David Weiss, the sin of Rabbi and Mrs. Abe Weiss.

2 4. The ladies of Hadassah have cast off clothing of every kind and they may be seen in the basement on Tuesdays. 5. A bean supper will be held Wednesday evening in the community center. Music will follow. 6. Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the JCC. Please use the large double door at the side entrance. 7. Thursday at 9, there will be a meeting of the Little Mothers Club. All women wishing to become Little Mothers please see the rabbi in his private study. 8. We are taking up a collection to defray the cost of the new carpet in the sanctuary. All those wishing to do something on the carpet will come forward and get a piece of paper. 9. If you enjoy sinning, the choir is looking for you! 10. The Associate Rabbi unveiled the synagogue's new fundraising campaign slogan this week: "I Upped My Pledge. Up Yours." And let s not forget Jewish goings-on outside the Synagogue: Purim Torah II: Central Park Minyan Moishe, a Jewish actor, is so down and out, he's ready to take any acting gig that he can find. Finally, he gets a lead, a classified ad that says, "Actor needed to play an ape." "I could do that!" says Moishe. To his surprise, the employer turns out to be the Central Park Zoo in New York. Owing to mismanagement, the zoo has spent so much money renovating the grounds and improving the habitat, they can no longer afford to import the ape to replace the recently deceased one, so, until they can, they'll put an actor in an ape suit. Out of desperation, Moishe takes the offer. At first, his conscience keeps nagging him, that he is being dishonest by fooling the zoo-goers. Moishe also feels undignified in the ape suit, stared at by the crowds who watch his every move. But after a few days on the job, he begins to enjoy all the attention and starts to put on a show for all the zoo-goers. Moishe hangs upside down from the branches by his legs, swinging about on the vines, climbing up the cage walls and roaring with all his might, while beating on his chest. Soon, he's drawing a sizable crowd. One day, when Moishe is swinging on the vines to show off to a group of school kids, his hand slips and he goes flying over the fence into the neighboring cage, the lion's den. Terrified, Moishe backs up as far from the approaching lion as he can, covers his eyes with his hands and prays at the top of his lungs, "Sh ma Yisrael HaShem Elokeinu, HaShem Echad!" The lion opens his powerful jaws and roars the response, "Baruch Shem K'vod Malchuto L'Olam Va'ed!" From a nearby cage, a panda yells, "Shut up, you jerks, you'll get us all fired!"

3 Kane Street Is the Place for Purim Festivities March For Everyone: From our active Megillah readings to our famous Purim Carnival, Kane Street has a very deserved reputation as the most joyous place to be in Brownstone Brooklyn for Purim. We combine costume parades, music making, delicious refreshments, and hundreds of revelers of all ages in joint singing and screaming, as we bring the Megillah to life and conspire to drown out you-know-who s name. Costumes are not required but encouraged. Bring friends and musical instruments, and make a joyous connection to our community when we really let everything out. Megillah reading begins at 8 p.m on Saturday, March 19. A more mellow Chapel Megillah reading is 7:45 p.m. On Sunday, March 20, join us for Shacharit services and another Megillah reading at 8:30 a.m. For Kids: The Sunday Carnival on March 20 costs a mere $20 per family for refreshments, games, prizes and unlimited kid fun.the schedule: 10:30 a.m. to noon for toddlers through Kindergarten and siblings: face painting, hamantaschen-baking, crownmaking and more. 1:30pm to 3:00pm for kids K - 6 and siblings: carnival games, facepainting, prizes and more. Enjoy the whole Megillah! Mazel Tov, B rucha Ha ba a to the New Baby Girl! The Kane Street community extends a warm Mazel Tov to Terri Gordon, Eric Zolov and Sascha and Chloe Gordon-Zolov on the birth of their new daughter and sister, who will be named in a Simchat Bat, covenantal ceremony at the Synagogue on Shabbat Zachor, March 19. We thank Terri and Eric for their sponsorship of Kiddush in honor of the Simche, and look forward to more nachis and celebrations with their family. Cobble Hill Health Center Shabbat Visit March 19 Join the Social Justice Committee at the Cobble Hill Health Center, as we spend an hour with Cobble Hill residents of all ages, schmoozing and singing songs. Place: This month only, meet at Kane Street at 9:45 a.m. to transport misloach manot to the Health Center, at 380 Henry St. Time: 10-11:00 a.m. All ages welcome! Mitzvah of the Month: Housewares Drive for Kids Out of Jewish Foster Care The Jewish Childcare Association of New York is collecting houseware items for children who are aging out of foster care into their own residences. Drop your donations in the bin in the lobby of the Goldman Educational Center. These young adults in transition need dishes, cutlery, bathroom accessories, frames, clocks and other small items in order to start their independent lives off on the right foot. Some items (shower curtain, for instance) are better donated new, while other items are perfectly fine if gently used. No furniture please. New Book Club: Read All About It Calling all who love books and have opinions: Alison Lowenstein, author of City Weekends and City Kid New York, is hosting a book club the first Thursday of every month, starting April 7, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Meet in the community room of the Goldman Educational Center. Refreshments provided. The first book to be discussed is The History of Love by Nicole Krauss. Bar Mitzvah Invitation Rabbi Weintraub and Susan Sanders invite you to share their joy as their son Daniel Lev is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah, 9:30 a.m. Saturday April 9, 2011, Shabbat Metzora. Kiddush luncheon will follow at the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, 185 Court Street.

4 Rabbi Weintraub s New Mini-Course: How to Give a D var Torah Sharing the wisdom of Torah can really help us, and you don t have to be a Rabbi or scholar to do it. This course will help novices navigate the Torah text so they can impart their own understanding to others in what we call a D var Torah, a brief Torah teaching. We will meet on three Wednesday evenings, March 23, 30 and April 13, 7:30-8:45 p.m. No Hebrew or Jewish background required. There is also no charge but we would appreciate your dropping us a line at office@kanestreet.org, if you d like to come. Ever Thought About Moving to Israel?
