How is it possible to daven early? There is a dispute in the Talmud (Berachot 27a) as to when the earliest time one is permitted to Daven Ma ariv, and the latest time permitted to daven Mincha. Rabbi Yehudah rules that one may only daven Mincha until Plag HaMincha (1 ¼ hours before sunset) and may only Daven Maariv after Plag HaMincha (even though before sunset). The other Rabbis, however, believe that one may Daven Mincha even until nightfall and therefore may only Daven Maariv after nightfall (Tzeit Ha kochavim). The Talmud concludes that one may choose to follow whichever approach he prefers, provided that he is consistent. The Mishna Berura (O.C. 233:11) explains that even under extenuating circumstances one may not Daven Mincha after Plag HaMincha and Daven Maariv before sunset on the same day. Based on this Halakhic discussion, the Mishna Berura (O.C. 267:2) writes, citing the Magen Avraham, that even someone who does not daven Ma ariv early during the week (in accordance with Rabbi Yehudah), may daven early on Shabbat as part of the fulfillment of the Mitzvah of Tosefet Shabbat (adding to Shabbat) which we discussed last week. SEFER MINHAGIM- ROSH CHODESH 1) Avelim may serve as Chazan for Mincha and Maariv, but not Shacharit and Musaf. 2) If an Avel during the 12 months of mourning for a parent or 30 days for any other relative, has a Yahrzeit for a parent on Rosh Chodesh, he may serve as Chazan for all the Tefilot including Shacharit, but should not serve as Chazan for Hallel. 3) On Rosh Hodesh we don t say Lamnatzeach between Ashrei and U Ba L tzion and we don t say El Erech Apaim before taking out the Sefer Torah. 4) The Hazan for Musaf stops after U Ba L tzion before saying Half Kaddish. This allows everyone time to take off and put away their Tefilin. After everyone has put away their Tefilin the Hazan says Half Kaddish followed by the silent Amidah. 5) There is no Mourners Kaddish after the Shir Shel Yom, rather we say it after Barchei Nafshi. Jackie Danicki was born in Ohio, christened Catholic at birth, and grew up on a farm. She didn t meet at Jewish person until she was 15 yrs old. But before she d even started kindergarten, Jackie was already entranced by Klal Yisrael. Jackie s unlikely crossing of paths with Robert and Karen Avrech, and the spirit and middot of their son, Ariel Chaim, ZT L, was the catalyst for a journey no one could have foreseen. Jackie will share the intimate details of why Judaism has resonated with her since childhood, and how she came to pursue Orthodox conversion. COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS Men & Women, age 25 and older, with at least one Ashkenazi grandparent, can enroll in the BRCA Founder Outreach Study for free BRCA testing. Screening and enrollment for the study is completed through a personal device such as a cell phone or tablet. Upon enrollment participants will be given a lab order and can receive their no cost blood test at a local Quest laboratory.
