1 A New Year, A New Look! While everyone has been busy enjoying their summer, here at the COA office, we have been very busy working with the team at ShulCloud, a synagogue data management company, to create a new, cloud-based membership management system and integrated website. We are so excited to share the new system with our members! By switching to the ShulCloud system, we will be able to offer you a seamless system for viewing all the latest news and events on our website, signing up for events, paying for any event admission fees, paying your bill, making donations, checking our member directory, and making updates to your own member information, in a secure environment. The new site also fully integrates with mobile devices so you can have COA with you anywhere you go! ShulCloud has been on the market for over ten years now and has become the leading synagogue database management system in the field. notifications, reports, statements and so much more will all be generated from one, integrated system. This will save time and money in the office as we will no longer need to rely on a variety of POP UP RABBI Rabbi s Favorite Things AUGUST 2017 Rabbi Ettman continues to provide us with teasers designed to enhance our interest in each week s Torah portion. August 5 Vaet Hannan, Shabbat Nahamu (Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11) - Children will listen and other ways Moses tries to get the people to pay attention. August 12 August 19 August 26 programs, rather, everything will now be in one place. Of course, as you can imagine, there have been a few minor kinks that have had to be worked out, but we think overall, we are ready to roll! You will shortly be receiving an notification from us that will provide you with a link to the new website. Once there, you will be asked to set up a password so that you can access all the restricted information that is not available to the general public, such as our Membership Directory. You will also have access to your profile. We would suggest that when you first log in and set up your account, you go to your profile page and review the information to ensure everything is correct. You will be able to make corrections and add any missing information. We hope you will enjoy using our new interactive website. This is just one more way that Congregation Or Ami is responding to the needs of our congregants. If you have any questions about the new website, please call Lori Dafilou, FSA, our Executive Director, at , ext. 200 or her at lorid@or-ami.org. During the month of August, Rabbi Ettman will be popping up throughout the neighborhood to say hello and hear all about your summer adventures! Families and kids can come out to see the Rabbi on Wednesday, August 30 between 6:30 and 7:30pm at Top This Yogurt, located at 422 Germantown Pike. And for the adults, join Rabbi Ettman at Brittingham s 640 E. Germantown Pike on Wednesday, August 16 from 6:30 until 7:30pm. If you stop by to say hello he may even buy you a drink! Ekev (Deuteronomy 7:12-11:25) - Memory, all alone in the moonlight: What do you think happens when you forget too many times? You will never believe what Moses says. Re eh (Deuteronomy 11:26-16:17) - How lucky we are to be alive right now - What vision do you have for the Promised Land? Shoftim (Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9) - Holding to the ground as the ground keeps shifting - The laws, the judges, the rules, oh my! Come see what it is all about! Join us on Shabbat mornings from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. as Rabbi Ettman leads us through Torah study, which includes interesting discussions of what ancient and contemporary thinkers and commentators have to say.

We embrace the varied needs and rich diversity of our congregants, our community, and the Jewish people. We endeavor to create an inviting and inclusive community that promotes spiritual fulfillment for our congregants and supports their search for God. We take pride in the strong partnership among our clergy, professional staff, lay leaders, and congregants. Guided by Jewish values, we are strengthened by our active volunteerism and informed decision-making. We uphold the principles and ideals of the Reform movement and are a member of the Union for Reform Judaism. Y
3 Nosh and Learn: Revitalizing Adult Education at Or Ami Cantor Jordan Franzel has stepped up to work with Rabbi Glenn Ettman to fill a void at Or Ami. Traditionally, the Director of Education provides adult education opportunities in addition to managing the religious school programs. Since we won t have an educator this coming year, I volunteered to take on the adult education part of the job. I will be able to put more time and energy into it than a full-time educator is able to, Cantor Franzel said. Cantor Franzel and Rabbi Ettman are planning events that they hope will attract a broad base of congregants. The adult educational events will take place once a month for about an hour and a half on Sunday afternoons. They will be social events with plenty of opportunities for congregants to socialize, partake of snacks and special drinks, and, of course, to learn. Each class stands on its own. So someone could sign up for one class, for the series of nine events, or for any variation thereof. It s an experiment. We ll see what kind of crowd we can attract, he added. Cantor Franzel outlined a few of the topics that have been set: Jewish Comedy. Rabbi Ettman and I are going to lead this one. We re going to look at how and why things are funny. We ll either read or re-enact certain comedic skits or scenes from movies or plays that are funny, for example, a scenes from Seinfeld or Woody Allen. We ll ask, Why is this funny? Why does this make us laugh? Jews Who Rock. We ll look at Jewish influences on the development of popular music. For example, in the mid 60s Bob Dylan transformed folk music into rock music, which propelled music even further. We ll also look a the relationship between Bob Dylan and The Beatles (whose manager Brian Epstein was Jewish) and how they influenced and affected each other. The Jewish Influence in Theater and Film. We ll focus not only on Jews in theater and film but also on Jewish ideas that are found there. So it s not a who s who in theater and film, but a study of what makes something Jewish in theater and film. We ll use theater pieces, film and music as the texts we re studying. For example, how did the Jewishness of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim influence their creation of West Side Story, which by the way, started out as East Side Story, a story about the conflict between a Jew and a Catholic! The X-rated Bible is also a provocative topic under consideration. Stories that your Rabbi was too embarrassed to talk about may be taught by one of Rabbi Ettman s friends, who is a professor of Bible studies. Other topics under consideration are Spirituality for the 21st Century, Jewish meditation, and Jewish views on death and dying. You can t really laugh at death but in some ways you can. You can look at death in the ritual way and how we follow mourning practices. Or we could look at the brighter side of things, the blessings, and our memories. So, although is a serious topic, it doesn t have to be a very somber one, he said. A brochure will be available soon with an outline of the entire program. There will be a charge to help cover the costs of the programs, food and beverages. A subscription rate will be offered for all nine classes or for any combination of classes. Get Involved! Cantor Franzel and Rabbi Ettman are looking for congregants to partner with them in bringing these ideas and programs to fruition. We want to have at least one congregant be the captain of an event to make sure it s working, to talk about ideas and what would be of interest to them and other congregants. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Cantor Franzel as soon as you can. Thanks for a job well done! Amy Seidman hosted her annual wine tasting and dinner to celebrate a job well done by Or Ami s RSPO (Religious School Parents Organization) volunteers. 4 Seventy Years and Counting: Save the Weekend of November for Or Ami s Birthday Celebration According to the website My Jewish Learning, the number 70 has special significance for the Jewish people: This number symbolizes the world. There are 70 nations in the world, 70 languages, and 70 princely angels. The Greek translation of the Bible, the first to make it available to the gentile, was done by 70 Jewish scholars, who, though working separately, produced 70 identical translations. The number also has special meaning for Congregation Or Ami, as we are in the process of planning our 70th birthday! Rabbi Ettman, Cantor Franzel, Terri Wolfheimer, Lori Dafilou, Andy Kasmen and Dave Nasatir are already at work doing the initial planning for the weekend of November 17th to the 19th. In addition, committee chairs will be appointed soon to take charge of each of the events that will be happening. Although plans and details are not yet finalized, the committee has sketched out some of their initial thinking. On Friday evening, November 17, Rabbi Ettman will be honored and officially welcomed to Congregation Or Ami. The Erev Shabbat Service will be followed by a special festive oneg. There will also be a Tot Shabbat, during which Michelle Ruder, director of the Early Childhood Education Center, will be honored. There will be a wine and cheese reception between the Tot Shabbat and the adult service. On Saturday morning, Rabbi Emeritus Seymour Prystowsky will be honored at Shabbat Service. Before the service, there will be a special breakfast served at our weekly Torah Study. Congregants will be encouraged to attend Torah Study and then stay for the service and Kiddush. On Saturday evening, there will be a concert featuring Cantor Franzel. There will be a cocktail hour in the lobby prior to the concert and a special dessert reception afterwards. There will be a charge for attendance at this event. On Sunday, we will celebrate by hosting a party with a birthday cake, of course! Students will be let out of school early so that families can attend. Look for a letter coming your way in early September with more details and sponsorship information. Invitations will go out on October 15. Further information will also be published in the September Oracle. 4 Help Beautify our Synagogue with a Fine Arts Stained Glass Window Gift Card For a $10 minimum contribution, the Fine Arts Committee will send a beautiful card for you, In Honor or In Memory The card depicts one of the large stained glass windows (designed by Benoit Gilsoul) on either side of the Beit K nesset Just call the office at Card will be inscribed with your personal message. Proceeds go toward beautification of our synagogue
5 Donor Honor Roll This year, in addition to the Standard and Senior Membership Dues categories, we offered the opportunity to our membership to contribute dues at higher levels. By doing so, they help to offset the costs of our programs, operational costs, staffing and special events. We are so thrilled to see the response this appeal has already brought and would like to ask our members who may not yet have returned their commitment forms, to please consider doing so at one of these higher levels. Members who contribute at these levels will be acknowledged each month in the Oracle, in our weekly and Shabbat programs, and in our High Holy Day booklet. For additional benefits, please refer to your commitment form. Rabbi Ettman, Cantor Franzel, Rabbi Prystowsky, the professional staff, our President, Larry Paul, along with all of the Board of Trustees, would like to thank the following families for their generous support of Congregation Or Ami: Chai Level Harvey Brodovsky Lauren and Josh Dunoff Hillary and Michael Israeli Lori and Craig Israelite Rhonda and David Kessler Brooke Stolper and Brian Kroker Denise and Greg Marks Bryn and Jeff Michaels Susan and Hal Michaels Carol and Alan Roomberg Jennifer and Doran Segal Peggy and Joel Sloane Etta and Gene Waldman Tamara Davis and Bruce Wightman Fredi Wolgin Rabbi s Circle Level Leslie and Stuart Berman Sara and Jeffrey Erlbaum Helene and Alex Levinson Carole and Joel Lukoff Dara and David Nasatir Elizabeth and Jeff Silberman Debbie and Brian Snyder Jacqueline and Marc Topaz L Dor v Dor Level Sandy and Howard Salasin These are the names of families who had returned their commitment forms prior to our printing deadline. 6 An Upbeat Annual Meeting By Lori Dafilou Over 40 congregants turned out on Tuesday evening, June 6, for grilled hot dogs and veggie burgers, with a side of Board appointees and budget approvals. Larry Paul, who will be continuing as President of the congregation (but without current co-president, Terri Wolfheimer), welcomed everyone to the Annual Meeting before Rabbi Ettman set the tone of the meeting with a brief text study and prayer. After Larry acknowledged and thanked the outgoing board members, Terri took the microphone to announce the names of the proposed slate of officers and trustees for the year, all of whom were unanimously approved by the crowd. Next, Rabbi Ettman discussed some of the many exciting events planned for the coming months, before launching a detailed explanation of the proposed dues structure for the new fiscal year. Finally, our Treasurer, Josh Dunoff, gave everyone the good news that for the first time in over six years, the synagogue expects to finish the year with a surplus in the bank! Josh then presented the proposed budget for next year, which was approved by the members in attendance. Rabbi Ettman and Cantor Franzel led the group in an inspiring version of Oseh Shalom before the meeting was adjourned. Treasurer, Josh Dunoff, presenting the new budget.
