1 APRIL 2018 The Community Comes Together to Celebrate the Journey to Freedom By Carole Verona Eighty people members of Or Ami and congregants from nine other religious communities came together to participate in an interfaith seder on Thursday, March 15, at Or Ami. The theme of the seder was A Taste of Passover: Sharing our Story of Freedom. Rabbi Glenn Ettman and Cantor Jordan Franzel created a unique 46-page Hagaddah with readings, songs, and prayers centering on the journey of our people from slavery to freedom. But the theme went way beyond that. One of the key messages throughout was captured in the opening reading: And we pray for all who are still bound, still denied their human rights. Scattered throughout the Hagaddah were facts about the plight of the approximately 43.3 million foreign-born people who live in the United States today. Cantor Franzel incorporated music that everyone could relate to, from our traditional Hinei Mah Tov to Paul Simon s American Tune to Go Down Moses. Looking back at the experience of the seder, Helene Levinson, who chaired the event, said one of the accomplishments was that it was a first seder experience for many and I think they really enjoyed it. I loved the Haggadah put together by Rabbi and Cantor which drew from so many traditions, religions and writings. Helene also thanked the members of the committee who helped with every aspect of the event: Sue Ackland, Debby Askow, Heather Fritts, Myra Stern, Lillian Toren, Carole Verona, Mel Waxman, and Randi Zimmer with support from Lori Dafilou, Nick Johnson and Infinity Caterers. I wanted to thank each and everyone of you for your help making the interfaith seder such a rousing success. It couldn t have happened without all of you. From the publicity, to the food, to the set-up, to the beautiful decorations and the very unique Haggadah created by Rabbi and Cantor, it was all wonderful. As we say at the end of every seder in our own special way...next Year at Or Ami! Rabbi Ettman echoed Helene s remarks. This seder was so wonderful and special. And one of the best comments came from a few congregants who said they can t wait to help with next year s version of this. The interfaith seder this year was a pure example of what makes Or Ami so special. And that is how we come together in celebration and in community. The evening provided a moment for us to not just share Passover with our interfaith friends, but to share Passover traditions with each other. From laughter, to learning, to loving one another, this evening was a great success and one which we will continue in the future. I am honored to be your Rabbi and the success of this community is how we come together. May this Passover be one of blessing and hope.

4 Olivia Prusky Daughter of Daria and Andrew Prusky April 7, 2018 For Olivia s mitzvah project, she chose to support Cradles to Crayons, which provides children in the Philadelphia area with the essentials they need with the goal of having a future free of childhood poverty. Olivia and her family held a bake sale at Or Ami s Purim Carnival and raised $250 for Cradles to Crayons. Olivia also organized a clothing drive on behalf of Cradles to Crayons and volunteered with her family at Cradle to Crayon s Giving Factory in West Conshohocken. Skyler Alten Daughter of Stacey and Brian Alten April 21, 2018 In 2003, my Grammy Toby and Poppy Rich got married and decided to donate their wedding gifts to Children s Hospital of Philadelphia to create the Richard and Toby Korman Davidov Music Therapy Room. This was the first ever music therapy room in the United States. The room is full of various instruments and recording devices and serves as a place where children can communicate by the magic of music and escape their illnesses. For my mitzvah project, I will be raising money for the Richard and Toby Korman Davidov Music Therapy Room. My goal is to continue to help kids and make them happy by helping them gain more musical resources. This money will go toward buying new instruments and sustaining a nurturing environment for the patients at CHOP. Jacob held a charity fitness boot camp at Tone Zone Fitness Studio. 100% of the proceeds were donated to creating welcome baskets for the families that included local favorites, sunscreen, and grocery store gift cards. Steven Bernstein Son of Renay and Howard Bernstein April 28, 2018 Steven has been serving meals to the homeless people at Face to Face for the past two years. He has gotten to know the clients so well that they can t help but to shout Yo, Steve whenever they see him. Steven has learned so many invaluable lessons in their dining hall, and he s excited to continue this mitzvah for many more years to come. Save the Date: Kabbalah and Baklava!
