2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The purposes for which the organization is formed are: To organize and maintain an organization or organizations to coordinate the soliciting of funds for charitable purposes and allocate the same to such local, non-local or foreign organizations as it may determine. To interest itself in all matters pertaining to the Jewish community in the city of Richmond and its vicinity and in and outside the state of Virginia, and to be helpful in such ways as are to the best interest of all persons of the Jewish faith. Approved/Revised by the JCFR Board of Directors - January 25, 2006 Background Since 1935, the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond has served as the central address of the organized Jewish community in Richmond. A voluntary association of social service agencies, organizations and synagogues, the Federation works to ensure the well-being, continuity and strength of Richmond's vibrant Jewish community. The Federation is guided by professional and lay leaders who are grounded in the traditional Jewish values of Tzedakah, deeds of loving kindness, justice and Tikkun Olam, which call upon us to rescue the imperiled, care for the vulnerable and help assure the vitality of Jewish life in Richmond, in Israel and around the world. The Federation fosters collaboration among synagogues, agencies, schools and organizations through its fundraising, planning, community relations and leadership development programs. The community's annual UJA/Jewish Welfare Fund Campaign and the subsequent allocations process fall under the auspices of the Federation to ensure the provision of vital social, educational, cultural and recreational services for the entire community. The Federation facilitates communal priority setting and collaborative efforts to address local needs; publishes The Reflector, a fortnightly newspaper communicating local, regional, national and international news and features of interest to the Jewish community; maintains this web site; and maintains the central community calendar of events and activities. Guided by the findings of its strategic planning, the Federation is working with its communal partners to ensure that the physical facility needs of the growing Richmond Jewish community are met in a timely and fiscally responsible manner. The goal is to provide modern, state-of-the-art facilities that will complement our vision of a warm, vibrant and inclusive Jewish community. Every member of the community is called upon to become actively involved in the life of our Jewish community through the Federation or any of its many partners. Together we can ensure that the healthy, vibrant and dynamic Jewish community we are privileged to enjoy continues to flourish for generations to come. Impact Vision Statement - Approved/Revised by the JCFR Board of Directors - January 25, 2006 Values of Outreach & Engagement The Jewish Community Federation of Richmond believes all individuals in the community are important and values their perspective in building, sustaining and perpetuating a caring community. The JCFR will create options for all Jews, regardless of age, economic status or affiliation, to participate in communal life. The Federation will collaborate with Jewish agencies, organizations and synagogues to promote outreach in an effort to foster Jewish continuity and an awareness of Jewish identity. Tzedakah & Tikkun Olam The JCFR works to improve the human condition of all people by performing and supporting acts of loving kindness. We will strive to ensure that all Jews liv-ing in Richmond, Israel and throughout the Diaspora have food, shelter and access to a coordinated network of social services. We respect cultural differences and will promote social justice and the benefits of tolerance and diverse opinions that strengthen our community and our world. To make all of this possible, we will create a culture of ownership and communal responsibility in which Jews are inspired to contribute time and financial resources. Jewish Continuity & Community - Building The JCFR will work to create collaborative partnerships among agencies, organizations and synagogues that leverage human and financial resources to secure a strong and vibrant community for this and future generations of Jews. The JCFR will communicate its message in collaboration with its partners to encourage all Jews to accept responsibility to participate in strengthening our community. 2

3 Needs We support a community-wide network of organizations that do two things: 1. Care for people in need here at home, in Israel and around the world. 2. Nurture and sustain the Jewish community today and for future generations. Through our community-wide network of partners and our strategic approach to funding, the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond identifies, supports and addresses the full range of social service issues and community needs with compassion and foresight, today and into the future. And everyone, including you, can make a world of difference right now. In Israel... Through the Jewish Agency For Israel and World ORT Federation funds training and educational programs to break the cycle of poverty, mentoring and enrichment programs for children at risk and programs to help new immigrants integrate successfully into Israeli society. Around the World... Through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee Federation is active in over 70 countries. In Russia and other Eastern European countries, home to the world s poorest Jews, Federation-funded programs offer relief to 168,000 Jewish elderly while helping over 10,000 children attend Jewish day schools. In Latin America, we help over 50,000 Jews with financial assistance and identity and renewal programs. 4 Programs Programs Enterprise Circle Description The Enterprise Circle is an affinity group designed to create both networking and life-long learning opportunities for new and established business professionals in the Richmond Jewish Community. We offer a speakers series and other social activities. Budget $0.00 PJ Library Description The PJ Library, in conjunction nationally with The Harold Grinspoon Foundation, sends FREE Jewish-content books and music on a monthly basis to children 6 months through 7 years old. This program was developed to help create stronger Jewish homes that foster Jewish curiosity and help families explore their Jewish identity. Families receive monthly mailings with appropriate material for the specific age of their child. We also offer story hours and other programs for families with young children. Budget $0.00 Richmond Jewish Coalition for Literacy Description Richmond Jewish Coalition for Literacy (RJCL) brings mentors to the students of Swansboro Elementary School. Mentors work with students at least one hour per week. The RJCL also brings special projects to the students and teachers of the school and helps provide supplies and extra resources. RJCL volunteers generally tutor for one hour a week, either one-on-one with a student or assisting teachers in the classroom. All new mentors will receive training, so each volunteer is well-equipped to help the at-risk child with whom he or she is matched. Mentors typically spend their time at the schools reading with the student, tutoring the student in a subject with which he or she is having difficulty, working on homework, and sometimes just listening to the child. Budget $0.00 Jewish Community Relations Committee/Advocacy Programs Description Through the Jewish Community Relations Committee and Advocacy programs the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond is able to work with elected officials, community leaders and the media to bring a clear message to the community about our community s needs and stances on important issues. The Committee sponsors an Advocacy Day at the State Capital each year and a reception to meet with local elected officials. Budget $0.00 4
