Key Passage: You shall acknowledge no God but me, no saviour except for me. Hosea 13:4 (NIV) Big Picture Question: Is there anything God cannot do? God can do all things. INTRODUCE THE STORY TEACH THE STORY EXPERIENCE THE STORY (15-20 Minutes) (10-15 Minutes) (20-25 Minutes)

The BIBLE Story Moses was born and called Exodus 1-4 Joseph s family lived in Egypt for many years. The family grew bigger and bigger. All the people in the family were called Israelites because they came from the family of Jacob, who was called Israel. After Joseph died, a new pharaoh, or king, took over Egypt. The new king did not like the Israelites. He made them work very hard, and he was afraid because there were so many of them. The king ordered all of their baby boys to be killed. Around this time, a woman had a baby boy. She wanted him to live, so she hid him. When the baby was bigger, she put him in a basket and set the basket at the edge of the river. The baby s older sister, Miriam, stayed nearby to watch the basket. Soon, the princess of Egypt went to the river to take a bath. She found the basket and the baby inside, and she felt sorry for the baby. The princess wanted the baby to be her son. The princess named the baby Moses. When Moses grew up, he left Egypt and went to Midian. Moses found a job as a shepherd, taking care of sheep. He got married and had a family. Back in Egypt, the king had died and a new king took over. But the new king still made the Israelites work very hard. They cried out to God for help. God heard their cries, and He planned to help them. One day, Moses saw a bush on fire. The angel of the LORD was in the fire, and the bush was not burning up. Suddenly, God called from the bush, Moses! Moses! Here I am, Moses said. God told Moses to take off his sandals. Then God said, My people are suffering. I want you to lead them out of Egypt to a good land I have for them. First, lead them into the desert so they can worship Me. What if they ask for Your name? What should I tell them? Moses asked. God said, I AM WHO I AM. Tell them: I AM has sent me to you. God warned that Moses job would not be easy. The king in Egypt would say no, but God promised that the king would one day let God s people go. So Moses headed back to Egypt. Christ Connection: God saved Moses life so Moses could grow up and save God s people from the Egyptian king. God used His Son, Jesus, to save people in an even better way. God sent Jesus to earth, and Jesus gave up His life to save us from our sin. 2

INTRODUCE the Story WELCOME TIME: Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Have one leader stand by the door with the clipboard to greet children by name and welcome their parents as they arrive. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. Prompt kids to discuss the biggest or most important task or chore they have ever been assigned. Who assigned it to them? Was it easy or difficult to complete? Say When we are asked to do important things, it can be exciting and a little scary. It s nice to feel important, but it can be hard to know that you are responsible for something big. Today we will hear a story from the Bible about a man named Moses. God chose Moses for a very big and important job. ACTIVITY PAGE Invite kids to complete the Connect the Dots activity page. Instruct kids to draw lines connecting the dots in numerical order to surround baby Moses basket. SAY Today we will hear about a time Moses mother covered a basket in waterproof material and laid Moses in the basket. Why do you think she did that? We ll learn what happened to Moses soon. ACTIVITY: Search for Moses Show a baby doll to the children. Ask boys and girls to close their eyes while you hide the doll somewhere in the room. Instruct children to open their eyes and look around the classroom for the hidden baby. Continue playing the game, allowing children to take turns hiding the baby. SAY A mother hid her baby boy to keep him safe. The princess found the basket, and she wanted the baby to be her son. She named the baby Moses. WORSHIP: While the children finish playing or coloring, get the worship DVD ready. Choose 3 or 4 songs to sing today. SAY It s large group time! Come sit on the rug with us! We re going to sing some fun songs together that worship God! Why do we sing to God? (Answer: To honor Him with our worship!) 3

TEACH the Story TRANSITION TO THE STORY: To gain the attention of all the kids to move them to Bible study, flip off the lights or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Place a bookmark at Exodus 1-4 in your Bible. Invite a kid to open it and reverently display the open Bible. SAY Today s Bible story is from Exodus, the second book in the Bible. We will hear the true story about a man named Moses, whom God chose to save His people.point to the Bible story picture. Remind children that all the stories in the Bible fit together to tell an even bigger story. The Bible tells us the big story of how God rescues sinners through His Son, Jesus. TELL THE BIBLE STORY: Show the Bible Story Video and then recap the Bible story by reading the words below. SAY After Jacob s whole family moved to Egypt to be with Joseph, their family became larger and larger. Joseph died, and the new king forced his whole family to work hard. God chose Moses to save His people, the Israelites, from the king in Egypt and get them to the land He planned to give them. God used His Son, Jesus, to save people in an even better way. Jesus gave up His life to save people from sin. PRACTICE THE KEY PASSAGE: Cut out the key passage marker and place it at Hosea 13:4. Invite a volunteer to come up and open your Bible to the key passage. Read the key passage aloud. Create motions for preschoolers to use as they say the key passage. Use the key passage song video for inspiration. SAY God rescued Moses when he was a baby because He planned for Moses to lead His people. God planned to rescue His people in an amazing way to show that there is no God but Him! He is the Savior! Sing the key passage song, No God But Me, and the theme song You Are Good. MISSIONS MOMENT: Mountain Tops missions video Say The Bagbys* are missionaries living in Nepal. God gave them an important job in His plan. God is using the Bagbys to share the good news about Jesus with the Tibetan people in Nepal. Let s see how God is working through the Bagby family. Show the Mountain Tops missions video. 4

SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION: Break into smaller groups with one leader in each group. Ask the question and open up for discussion. Display the Bible story picture as you ask the following questions. Retell portions of the Bible story as needed. God saved Moses life when he was a baby so he could grow up and save God s people from the Egyptian king. God chose Moses to save His people. Display the Bible story picture as you ask the following questions. Retell portions of the Bible story as needed. -How did the Israelite mother keep her baby boy safe? (hid him, put him in a basket at the river s edge) -Who found the baby boy in the basket? (the princess of Egypt) -What did the princess name the baby? (Moses) -What did God want Moses to do? (God chose Moses to save His people.) -What did God tell Moses to say if people asked His name? (I AM WHO I AM.) - Is there anything God cannot do? God can do all things. PRAY TO CLOSE: SAY Why do we pray? (Answer: To open our hearts to God and talk to Him!) Ask the group if anyone has any prayer requests and pray together as a group. If there are a lot of children, break into smaller groups and have leaders pray for the children s requests. SNACK: Gather preschoolers for snack time and have them wipe their hands with a sanitizing wipe. Pray, thanking God for the snack. Pray, thanking God for the snack. Remind children that God can do all things. EXPERIENCE the Story ACTIVITY 1: Burning bush Give kids a sheet of paper and bits of red, yellow, and orange tissue paper. Tell the kids to draw a bush using brown crayons or markers. Then provide glue to help them stick fire-colored tissue paper all over their paper. SAY Moses saw a bush that was covered in fire but did not burn up. He was curious to see it and went to investigate. When he got closer, God spoke to him. God called Moses to deliver His people from captivity. It was a big job, and Moses was afraid to accept it, but God promised to help him and give him power. Jesus was sent by God with an even bigger job: to die on the cross and rescue us from our sin. Jesus obeyed God perfectly, and only He can lead us out of captivity to sin and into God s kingdom. ACTIVITY 2: Sing and move Sing and move Walk in a circle, clap hands, and sing to the tune of B-I-N-G-O : The Israelites, the Israelites, Who did God choose to lead them? M-O-S-E-S, M-O-S-E-S, M-O-S-E-S will lead them out of Egypt. Repeat the song and replace each letter of Moses name with a clap, stomp, or hop. Sing again with the lyrics below: People, people everywhere, Who did God send to save them? J-E-S-U-S, J-E-S-U-S, J-E-S-U-S saves His people from sin. 5

SAY The Egyptian king made God s people work very hard. God heard His people cry out for help and planned to rescue them, but who would lead them? God chose Moses to save His people, the Israelites. Years later, God planned to save people in an even greater way from their sin. Who would save them? Jesus! Jesus gave up His life to save us from our sin. TRANSITION AND DISMISSAL: For the remainder of the time, kids may color the Bible story coloring page, play a simple game to practice the key passage, or sing another song together. CHECKOUT PROCEDURE: As parents begin to arrive, open the door and have one leader stand just outside the classroom door with the attendance sheet. Take the parent s security sticker and call loudly for the child to come. While you wait for the child to come, tell the parents something that their child enjoyed doing or did well during the service and distribute the preschool big picture cards for families. Before you let the child leave the classroom, look to see that the parent and child security codes match and remove the sticker from the child s shirt as they leave. Note: If a parent lost their security sticker, send them to the check-in desk for approval; never allow a child to go to a parent unless they have the security sticker. 6
