2 PURIM IS COMING Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in Ancient Persia from Haman's plot to kill all Jews in a single day. Here are the mitzvahs and customs of Purim at NHBZ: 1. Give Charity to the Poor (Mitzvah of Matanot l'evyonim) Here are some ways to fulfill the mitzvah of giving charity to the poor on Purim. ~ Od Yosef Chai - NHBZ collects money to give to Od Yosef Chai, an organization that distributes money to the poor in Israel. Make checks payable to Rabbi's Charity Fund and bring or send them to our office. To donate by credit card, please call , ext. 2. The deadline for contributions is Monday, March 21. ~ Hasta LaPasta Purim Palooza - Buy special "pasta groggers" for $4 each. Use the boxes of pasta as groggers during Megillah reading after which they will be donated to the Jewish Food Pantry in our community; proceeds will benefit the NHBZ Chesed Fund and the Rabbi's Charity Fund. Pay in advance, or buy them in shul when you arrive for Megillah reading on March Send Gifts to Friends (Mitzvah of Mishloach Manot) Fulfill the mitzvah of Mishloach Manos! Give actual gifts of food to at least two friends, then send our PURIM CARDS to everyone else!! All proceeds will benefit our NHBZ Chesed Fund. Cards may be purchased in our office at $10.00 per pack of 5 cards with envelopes, or $25 for three 5-packs. 3. Fast of Esther To commemorate the day of prayer and fasting that the Jews held in the Book of Esther, we fast on the day before Purim, Wednesday, March 23, beginning at 5:48 a.m. and concluding at 7:57 p.m. 4. 3 From Rabbi Smason Purim With the festive holiday of Purim fast approaching, I'm writing to remind you of the time-sensitive mitzvah of Matanos L'Evyonim -- tzedaka (charity) to the poor. For many years, we at NHBZ have collected Matanos L'Evyonim in conjunction with the worthy organization Od Yosef Chai. Our special arrangement with Od Yosef enables me to distribute locally half of all money collected. The remaining half supports our Jewish brethren in Jerusalem and elsewhere. All money pledged and collected for Matanos L'Evyonim is distributed on Purim. This year, Purim takes place on March 23/24. Your donation of $10, $18, $36, $54, $100 - or whatever amount you care to give-- will make a significant difference to those in need, and enable you to fulfill the precious Purim mitzvah of Matanos L'Evyonim. Checks can be made out to 'Rabbi s Charity Fund' This year I strongly encourage you to consider the purchase of products from Judea and Sameria to support the Jewish communities there. Whether for mishloach manos or otherwise, it's important to boost those communities and counter the efforts of those seeking to choke those communities. 7 Welcome to Beyond Twelve Gates by Rabbi Ze ev Smason Parshas Pekudei March 12, 2016 "Does Nature Make You Happy?" You've heard the expression "look before you leap." But have you ever heard of a leapling? A person born on February 29 may be called a "leapling" or a "leaper." February 29, which occurred last week, comes around once every four years as an add-on to make calendar math add up. You would think there would be about a quarter the number of leaplings as there are people born on any other day. But in fact, there are 7 percent fewer than expected births on February 29. Why? Modern parents can often choose their children s birthdates just as they can choose their names. There appear to be far fewer cesarean deliveries on February 29 than on surrounding days, with many mothers scheduling induced labor or cesareans on a different date. As a result, a leap day birthday is even rarer than we d expect. Why do some parents opt out of a February 29 birthdate for their child? Most of the time leaplings are forced to celebrate their birthdays the day before, on February 28 or the day after on March 1. Having to wait four years between birthdays is just one potential frustration for leap day babies. In interviews with some leaplings, they describe being teased by classmates, trying to avoid being asked when their birthday is, and encountering suspicions from bouncers, doctors and government agencies about the birthdates on their ID cards. Birthdays that carry social weight, like Bar and Bat Mitzvot may not be considered as significant if they don t fall on the actual birthdate. Milestones like 18 or 21 can be just as frustrating. Veronica, a leapling from Texas, told the story of a bar s bouncer who tore up her ID when she presented it on her 21st birthday, and said it was because there is no 29th of February. (She was subsequently reimbursed for her torn up ID and given a free drink.) But most leaplings, despite the occasional hassles, say they re glad to be part of the exclusive club. Everyone in the world is unique, with an individualized life purpose to fulfill. The Torah teaches that just as the facial features of every individual are different than all others, so too are their character traits unique. Like all children, leap day babies truly are special, even more so than the day they were born. Parshas Pekudei - Exodus 38: :38 This week we read the final portion of Exodus, a book which began with the Jewish people enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt and now ends with the completion of the construction of the Mishkan in the desert. Exodus is known as 'The Book of Redemption'; redemption was achieved not only through our escape from slavery, but also through receiving the Torah on Mt. Sinai which gave purpose to that freedom. The climax of that salvation was when G-d rested His presence among the Jewish nation when the Mishkan was completed. Parshas Pekudei begins with a complete accounting of the gold, silver and copper contributed by the people for use in the Mishkan. Following an inspection and approval of the many utensils and unassembled parts, Moses sets up the Mishkan on Rosh Chodesh Nissan as each part is anointed and arranged in its proper location. When the Mishkan is finally complete with every vessel in place, a cloud descends upon it, indicating that G-d's glory was resting there. Whenever the cloud moved away from the Mishkan, the Jewish people would follow it. At night the cloud was replaced by a pillar of fire. 7

8 Rabbinic Ruminations With spring on the horizon, most of us will soon find it easier to spend time outdoors. That's a good thing, as recent studies suggest that nature can help our brains and bodies to stay healthy. People have been discussing their profound experiences in nature for the last several 100 years -- from Thoreau to John Muir to many other writers, says David Strayer, of the University of Utah. Now we are seeing changes in the brain and changes in the body that suggest we are physically and mentally more healthy when we are interacting with nature. Here are some of the ways that science is showing how being in nature affects our brains and bodies. -- Being in nature decreases stress. In a recent experiment conducted in Japan, participants were assigned to walk either in a forest or in an urban center while having their heart rate variability, heart rate, and blood pressure measured. The participants also filled out questionnaires about their moods, stress levels, and other psychological measures. This study and others provide evidence that being in natural spaces -- or even just looking out of a window onto a natural scene -- somehow soothes us and relieves stress. -- Nature makes you happier and less brooding. In one 2015 study, Stanford University researchers randomly assigned 60 participants to a 50-minute walk in either a natural setting (oak woodlands) or an urban setting (along a four-lane road). Assessment results showed that those who walked in nature experienced less anxiety, rumination (focused attention on negative aspects of oneself), and negative affect, as well as more positive emotions, in comparison to the urban walkers. They also improved their performance on memory tasks. -- Nature relieves attention fatigue and increases creativity. A 2012 study showed that hikers on a four-day backpacking trip could solve significantly more puzzles requiring creativity when compared to a control group of people waiting to take the same hike -- in fact, 47 percent more. The Talmud speaks of our connection to the earth: "Adam's torso (was created from the dust of) Babylonia. His head (was created from the dust of) the Land of Israel. His limbs (were created from the dust of) the rest of the lands..." (Sanhedrin 38a-b) It isn't coincidental that nature is nurturing. Quote of the Week Time is the coin of your life.
