7 Beyond Twelve Gates Parsha Bechukosai Q: What do you call 40 millionaires around a TV watching the World Series? A: The Chicago Cubs. In 2016, though, no one is laughing at the lovable losers of Chicago's North Side. Firmly entrenched in first place with the best record in Major League Baseball, intelligent managing has played a key role in the Cubs' success. Earlier in the season Cubs manager Joe Maddon unveiled a new strategy against the reigning National League MVP, Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper. Maddon realized that his club couldn't stop Harper, widely considered the best hitter on the planet, from coming to the plate. But the Cubs skipper apparently decided that his pitchers don't have to give Harper anything to hit...ever. In an early May game Harper took six walks, including three intentional walks. And in the at-bats where Maddon didn't order a walk, it's pretty clear Cubs pitchers were told to keep the ball away from the strike zone at all costs. In the one plate appearance where he didn't walk, Harper was hit by a pitch. So, to recap, Harper stepped up to the plate seven times during the contest and reached base in all seven. But since walks and hit-by-pitches don't count as official at-bats, he technically reached base seven times despite not receiving an at-bat. That set a major-league record. Oh, and the Cubs managed to come away with a victory too. Chicago won 4-3, and Harper did very little to impact the outcome of the game. Following the win, Maddon discussed his decision to give Harper free passes all night. Maddon on walking Harper:"[Because of] how good he is -- why tempt fate? If the other guy [the next batter] gets you, that's fine. You have no problem with that." Jewish law permits certain types of risk-taking in cases of necessity. For example, the Talmud notes without criticism the fact that people risk their lives and work high up in trees in order to earn a living. However, such risks are not to be condoned if done merely for recreation. What is the basis for taking reasonable risks? King David said, G-d protects the fools (Psalms 116:6). Even should there be some latent danger in the act, G-d may or is likely to intercede on the person's behalf and protect the "fool." However, when it comes to unnecessary risks -- such as pitching to Bryce Harper -- why tempt fate? Bechukosai - Leviticus 26: :34 Bechukosai, the last Torah portion in the book of Leviticus, begins by briefly listing some of the blessings and rewards that the Jewish people will receive for diligently learning and following the Torah. The Portion then shifts to the subject matter which has made it famous -- G-d's admonitions and warnings of the consequences if the Jewish people abandon the Torah. Step by step, the Torah describes the tragedies which will befall the Jewish people if they abandon observance of the Torah, providing an eerie account of what has been part of our history to this day. There is good news, however; teshuva (return or repentance) is possible at any time to avert an otherwise harsh decree. The book of Leviticus concludes with a brief discussion of tithes. Rabbinic Ruminations You may have hundreds of friends on Facebook, but have you ever considered how many real friends you have? A new study conducted by researchers from Israel s Tel Aviv University (TAU) and MIT shows that only half of your buddies would actually consider you their own friend. People have a poor perception of friendship ties, and this limits their ability to influence their "friends," according to the

8 research. "It turns out that we're very bad at judging who our friends are." says Dr. Erez Shmueli of TAU, who helped to conduct the study. "And our difficulty determining the reciprocity of friendship significantly limits our ability to engage in cooperative arrangements. We learned that we can't rely on our instincts or intuition. There must be an objective way to measure these relationships and quantify their impact." The researchers conducted social experiments and examined friendship surveys from some 600 students in Israel, Europe and the US to assess friendship levels and expectations of reciprocity. We found that 95 percent of participants thought that their relationships were reciprocal, Dr. Shmueli says. If you think someone is your friend, you expect him or her to feel the same way. But in fact, that s not the case -- only 50 percent of those polled matched up in the bidirectional friendship category. Who are your real friends, then? It turns out, there are a few easy ways to tell. The number of mutual friends you have and the similarity of your social statuses can determine whether you're actually friends or not. "The difference in the number of friends of the two individuals" is a good predictor, Dr. Shmueli said. "The higher this difference is, the lower the likelihood of the friendship to be reciprocal." South African poet C.J. Langenhoven said, "Friends should be like books, few, but hand-selected." We need real friends -- someone you can trust, to discuss plans, feelings, ambitions. Yet often our friends are the result of circumstances: neighbors, colleagues, roommates. The Hebrew word for friend is chaver, related to the word chibbur -- meaning 'connected.' Ethics of the Fathers teaches, "Acquire for yourself a friend." (1:6) The definition of friendship is loyalty. Real friends are those with whom you have a deep connection and closeness.
