6 Psalm 15 - NIV Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain? 2 The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart; 3 whose tongue utters no slander, who does no wrong to a neighbor, and casts no slur on others;

7 4 who despises a vile person but honors those who fear the Lord; who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind; 5 who lends money to the poor without interest; who does not accept a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things will never be shaken.

8 BACKGROUND TO PSALM 15 Psalm 14 and 15 are a study in contrasts. In Psalm 14, you have the SINNER (v.1 fool ). In Psalm 15, you have the SAVIOR. No one else can keep this Psalm like Him.

9 Many scholars believe that Jesus may have been referring to Psalm 15 when He gave His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).

10 THE THESIS OF PSALM 15 The thesis of Psalm 15 is that God is a holy God who must be approached in a holy way. There is a correct way biblically to enter into worship.

11 David wrote Psalm 15 after trying to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem (I Samuel 6).

12 God gave specific instructions on how the Ark of the Covenant was to be carried.

13 I Samuel 6: But God struck down some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy of them to death because they looked into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them. 20 And the people of Beth Shemesh asked, Who can stand in the presence of the Lord, this holy God? To whom will the ark go up from here?

14 Verse 1 is a reference to O.T. worship which shows us the truth of how to come before the Lord.

16 Do we come to the Presence of the Lord only when we come to church? We have the Presence of God dwelling in us wherever we go (I Cor. 6:19-20). Location for worship is no longer the issue. Our issue.how do you enter into worship wherever you worship? Psalm 15 is nicknamed the ENTRANCE PSALM.

17 David understood 2 things about living in the Presence of God: (1) It provides us with a sense of DIRECTION in life (v. 1a). (2) It provides us with a sense of SECURITY in life (v. 1b).

18 I. OUR WALK (v. 2a) David uses the word blameless to describe the walk of the one who is a true worshipper. The Hebrew word does not imply perfection. It is a reference to the offering of the sacrificial lambs for worship (Ex. 12). The offering was presented to the High Priest for His examination (Psalm 139:23-24).

19 II. OUR WORK (v. 2b) The key word to describe our work is righteous. These works do not save us (Titus 3:5). Psalm 15 is not a plan of how to be saved. It is a picture of the life that belongs to God.

20 III. OUR WORDS (v. 2-4) 1. What we say will be constructive (2c). 2. What we say will be considerate (3b). 3. What we say will be with conviction (4a). 4. What we say will be counted on (4b).

21 IV. OUR WAYS (v. 5) These have to do with our relationship to finances. 1. Our motives will be pure (5a). 2. Our methods will be pure (5b).

22 NEW TESTAMENT TRUTH Psalm 15 is a Messianic Psalm that shows us a picture of the only ONE who can keep these commands perfectly. He lives inside of the believer by His Spirit (Romans 8:9). Only as you submit to the Holy Spirit and surrender your will to Christ, will you be able to completely fulfill Psalm 15.
