Why Did Jesus Come? Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death. Acts 2:22-23 When Jesus comes into our present and past (in our perception), He defeats the works of the devil in our lives, He overcomes the world, He brings us to repentance, He heals the sick, He gives rest, He comforts all who morn, He delivers the oppressed. He does what is needed in our lives and He is superb at it! This article includes a Short List of the seventy reasons for His coming. 1. To save His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins. 2. To baptize in the Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. John 1:31-33, 7: To fulfill the Law. Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 4. To bear sickness. Matthew 8:17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: "He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses." Isaiah 53 1 Peter 2:24 Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness by whose stripes you were healed. 5. To call sinners to repentance. Matthew 9:13 "But go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance." Mark 2:17; Luke 5:32, 13:1-5 Page Patricia A. Velotta

6. To bring a sword/division. Matthew 10:34-35 Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter in law against her mother in law ; Luke 12:49, To give rest. Matthew 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." 8. To save that which was lost. Matthew 18:11 For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost. 9. To serve. Matthew 20:28 Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. Mark 10: To give Himself a ransom for all. 1 Timothy 2:6 Who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. 11. To establish a new covenant. Matthew 26:28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Hebrews 8:6, 9: To preach the Kingdom of God. Mark 1:38 But He said to them, "Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this purpose I have come forth." Luke 4:43 but He said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent." 13. To guide our feet into the way of peace Luke 1:78-79 Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace. 14. To preach, heal and deliver. Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD. Page Patricia A. Velotta

Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. 15. To save men s lives. Luke 9:56 For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men s lives but to save them. 16. To send fire on the earth, Luke 12:49 I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 17. To seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. 18. To bring grace and truth. John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 19. To provide everlasting life to believers. John 3:16-18 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 20. To do the will of Him who sent Me. John 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. John 7:28, 8:42; Hebrews 10:7 21. To bring judgment. John 9:39 And Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind. 22. That they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. 23. To suffer and die in our place. John 12:27 Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 24. To dispel the darkness. John 12:46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. Page Patricia A. Velotta

25. To save the world. John 12:47 "And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 26. To be our example. John 13:15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 1 Peter 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps. 27. To make known and make visible the Father. John 14:7, 9 If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, Show us the Father? 28. To expose sin. John 15:22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 29. To overcome the world. John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. 1 John 5:4-5 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 30. To give eternal life. John 17:3 "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 31. To make the Father s name/character known. John 17:6 I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. 32. To be the King of the Jews John 18:37a Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. 33. To bear witness of the truth John 18:37b For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice. Page Patricia A. Velotta

34. To give the free gift of justification to all men. Romans 5:18 Therefore, as through one man s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 35. To condemn sin in the flesh, Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh. 36. To save all Israel. Romans 11:26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 37. To deliver us from this present evil age. Galatians 1:4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father. 38. To redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4-5 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 39. To crucify the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:24 And those who are Christ s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 40. To accomplish the eternal purpose. Ephesians 3:11 According to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, 41. To sanctify and cleanse the church. Ephesians 5:25b-27 just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 42. To save sinners. 1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 43. To redeem us in order to make us a special people. Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Page Patricia A. Velotta

44. To destroy the devil Hebrews 2:14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil. 45. To be our High Priest. Hebrews 9:11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 46. To put away sin. Hebrews 9:26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 47. To fulfill the law. Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 48. To take away the first covenant to establish the second covenant. Hebrews 10:9 then He said, "Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God." He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 49. To bring us to God 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit. 1 Peter 4: To manifest eternal life. 1 John 1:2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us 51. To destroy the works of the devil 1 John 3:8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 52. That we might live through Him 1 John 4:9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 53. To be the Savior of the world 1 John 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 54. To give us understanding. Page Patricia A. Velotta

1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 55. To do the Father s business. Luke 2:49 And He said to them, "Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father s business?" John 4:34 Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. 56. To glorify the Father on earth Isaiah 61:3b He may be glorified." John 16:28 I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father." John 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. 57. To reconcile all things to the Father, having made peace through His blood. Colossians 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. 58. To present us holy, blameless, and above reproach. Colossians 1:21-23 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister. 59. To do His Father s will Hebrews 10:7 Then I said, Behold, I have come In the volume of the book it is written of Me To do Your will, O God. 60. To die for you and me. Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 61. To become poor that we might be rich 2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.
