A year full of possibilities and surprises. As we begin this New Year, I wanted to share an inspiring list that I came across on the internet: businessinsider.com/100-amazing-accomplishments-achieved-at-every-age It was really inspiring to read it; that no matter what your age, you can still accomplish something amazing. The list went from age 1 to age 100, and highlighted an outstanding accomplishment that was reached at that age. I ll share a few with you, but I would encourage you to go online and read for yourself: At age 1, Christian Friedrich Heinecken, the legendary child prodigy, had read the Pentteuch (the first five books of the Bible). At 8, three-time Olympic gold medal runner Wilma Rudolph took her first step after suffering from polio as a child. At 16, American sharpshooter Annie Oakley challenged and defeated the well-known marksman Frank Butler by hitting a dime in midair from 90 feet. At 21, Thomas Edison created his first invention, an electric vote recorder. At 34, Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry, wrote The Star-Spangled Banner. At 46, Jack Nicklaus became the oldest man ever to win the Masters. At 55, Pablo Picasso completed his masterpiece, Guernica. At 69, Canadian Ed Whitlock of Milton, Ontario, Canada, became the oldest person to run a standard marathon in under three hours (2:52:47). At 77, John Glenn became the oldest person to go into space. At 81, Bill Painter became the oldest person to reach the 14,411-foot summit of Mt. Rainier. At 91, Allan Stewart of New South Wales completed a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of New England. At 100, Frank Schearer seems to be the oldest active water skier in the world. People are doing extraordinary things all the time at any age there s no reason you can t be one of them! 5 The Choice Is Ours Chaplain Craig Burton Habakkuk was an Old Testament prophet who was greatly distressed by the moral decline of the nation of Judah. After learning that God would punish the nation through the ruthless Babylonian invaders, Habakkuk was even more distraught. He imagined the foreign army destroying and murdering at will. There would be nothing to stop them and there would be no one to save them. Habakkuk and his fellow citizens could do nothing but helplessly wait for the invasion to begin. Yet out of this depressing background where things seemingly could not get worse, the prophet shockingly speaks of joy. 17 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. 19 The Sovereign LORD is my strength; He makes my feet like the feet of a deer, He enables me to go on the heights. Habakkuk 3:17-19 (NIV) We may not known the fear of awaiting an enemy invasion, but all of us experience times when the fig tree does not bud and when there is no grapes on the vine, so to speak. The prophet s words remind us that life is filled with hard times and difficulties. For example, as seniors we often find that our golden years are not so golden as we experience greater health challenges, the loss of a spouse, disability etc. We learn from Habakkuk that we don t have to let these times destroy our spirits. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. Because God is always with us and because He is in charge of every circumstance no matter how dismal it may appear, we have reason to rejoice. But notice that rejoicing in the Lord is something that we must choose to do. We can choose to rejoice in the Lord or to fix our minds on our circumstances of adversity. One response leads to victory and the other to despair; but the choice is clearly ours. The prophet concludes by having us picture a deer dancing and leaping securely over the hills and countryside. It is an image of our victory not necessarily of circumstances but of attitude. As we face the inevitable problems of life and the increasing difficulties of aging, let us remember the prophet s encouragement to take our eyes off of our adversities and to choose to rejoice in the Lord. 6 From the Desk of Stephanie Proper Administrator & Executive Director Let our New Year s resolution be this: We will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word. Goran Persson Welcome 2018! 2017 has gone by so quickly it s hard to believe we are already in a new year. We had a great year here at Valley View Village, growing in community and grace. January 9th, is our next General Assembly or All Campus Meeting. Please, come with questions, concerns, and to get more information about our campus and the merger, or just come for the pie. One important thing that affects all of us on campus is calling 911. Calling 911 is unfortunately, at times necessary. With the size of our campus and the similarity in apartment/unit numbers of our buildings, it is especially important to relay the proper information to 911 dispatch so the emergency personnel can arrive at the correct location in a timely manner. There are a few guidelines to follow when calling 911. Do your best to stay calm. It is very important to stay as calm as possible and answer all of the question you are asked. Providing an accurate address is critically important. Know the location of your emergency. When you call 911 say I am at Valley View Village, 2571 Guthrie Ave, in the Cottages/Manor at apartment/unit #. It may help to give a description of your unit. I am in a townhome style cottage unit #11B or I am in The Manor, the red brick, three story apartment building towards the front of the campus. Make sure your unit number or apartment number is not covered by decorations. If you have a cell phone register the number with This enables the dispatch to know where you are if you are unable to communicate in an emergency. We will be getting new signs in the future to better direct visitors on our campus. As I wrap up my first year here at Valley View, I would like to thank all of you for making me feel at home. I feel blessed to be here.
