1 March/April 2013 Adar/Nisan/Iyar Baltimore Road Rockville, Maryland Presidents Corner: Heard Any Good Rumors Lately? by Rodney Matheson and Jonathan Solomon, TI co-presidents Volume 6 Number 3 Weekly Religious Services Jonathan Solomon and Rodney Matheson Reading Practice In 1897, a reporter erroneously reported the death of Mark Twain -- to which the author (depending on which source you consult) responded: The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated. Mark Twain went on to live another 13 years. Tikvat Israel members have been approaching the two of us recently to ask about all kinds of rumors they ve heard. One such rumor has to do with the financial health of our synagogue. While the financial pressures are real and During a recent classroom visit at TI s Early Childhood Center, Rabbi David Abramson kept his reading skills sharp before a mostly attentive audience of youngsters. Congregants will vote on March 3 to extend the rabbi s interim appointment by one year. (Photo by Sam Freedenberg) very challenging, the lay leadership, clergy and professional staff have been working tirelessly to raise non-dues revenue at every turn, while scrutinizing all of our expenses. These are tough economic times for families, businesses and especially nonprofits. But we will persevere! In keeping with the original goal of the annual operating budget that you passed as a congregation before the start of this fiscal year, we are working to recast the current year budget with the goal of getting as close to breaking even as possible. So what has made this year so challenging for our synagogue? Several factors, including (though not limited to) these: A fiercely competitive pre-school environment in Montgomery County Continued on page 3 Monday...6:45 a.m...7:30 p.m. Tuesday...7:30 p.m. Wednesday...7:30 p.m. Thursday...6:45 a.m...7:30 p.m. Friday...8 a.m... 2 Cantor to Sing About Betrothals in Concert You can expect an evening of simcha as Cantor Rochelle Helzner, accompanied by the Mark Novak Band, inspires us at her annual concert at Tikvat Israel at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 19. This year s concert theme is Under the Chuppah: The Music of Marriage, and the show will feature music from that which makes the Jewish wedding a beloved life-cycle event. The evocative arrangements will bring to life the spirit of joy and celebration felt on this happiest of days. The annual Cantor s Concert is the major fund-raising event of the year at the synagogue. Event sponsors will be treated after the concert to a reception in the Gudelsky Education Wing featuring a wedding cake and other delectable treats. To become a sponsor, contact Aaron Mannes, chair of TI s Ways and Means Committee, at aaron.mannes@gmail.com. The annual concert requires many volunteers. If you can lend a hand, whether for event setup, lighting and sound or serving as an usher, contact Mary Wagner, concert coordinator, at marydpwagner@gmail.com. Ticket information will be announced soon. Save Your Blood for TI Congregants are asked to mark Sunday, April 21, on their personal calendars now as the date for the annual Tikvat Israel blood drive, sponsored by the Social Action Committee. The event will take place in the social hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Signup details will be provided shortly. Becoming a Kosher Kitchen Pro Would you like to learn what s involved in becoming a mashgiach the person responsible for helping to ensure we maintain a kosher kitchen at TI and that the food we serve and its preparation follow TI s kashruth policy? Marsha Lyons would like to hear from you (mars545@comcast.net or ), so she can schedule the 90-minute training session and a couple of apprenticeships for all new trainees. Once trained, a TI mashgiach serves once every 4-6 weeks, usually on Shabbat. The next training will follow Pesach. Kitchen Volunteering Please consider volunteering in the kitchen on Saturday morning on an occasional basis so the shul can continue to offer a delicious kiddush for all to enjoy on each Shabbat. Contact Marsha Lyons at mars545@comcast.net or Our Field Trip to the Baseball Park The TI Women s Network has purchased a block of 50 tickets to watch the Washington Nationals play the Baltimore Orioles at Nationals Park on Memorial Day, May 27. Game time is 1:05 p.m. Like last year, the TI contingent will sit as a group in the Upper Gallery (section 319). Tickets are $29 each. 3 Presidents Corner continued from page 1 where aggressive discounts to parents are the norm. Higher-than-anticipated tuition discounts, along with state-mandated minimum teacher-to-student ratios, have resulted in a large deficit ($50K) at TI s Broadman-Kaplan Early Childhood Center. An oversupply of commercial rental space in the county (you can t help but notice the For Lease signs wherever you drive), making it difficult to rent our building s available space at a rate higher than what it would cost to heat and maintain it. We are promoting our space s availability (it s listed online among commercial sites, similar to MLS residential home listings). Several prospective tenants have visited and, at press time, we are holding discussions with some prospects. The lack of incoming tenant checks at this point does not help the non-dues revenue line. Slightly lower collection of dues payments compared to last year. The economic climate continues to put pressure on some members who are not able currently to pay the budgeted dues amounts. Most of our expense lines are on target, including utilities and office supplies. Every professional staff member and committee chair has been looking for creative ways to offer meaningful services and events to our members that break even or even turn a modest profit. For example, our Israeli Film Festival just raised nearly $1,000 (Yasher koach to our outstanding Adult Education Committee!) and our Bulletin volunteers typically generate at least $500 per issue in advertising revenue. As co-presidents, we have met in person and/or spoken by phone with countless people since starting in our shared leadership role. We have consulted with individuals within the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism movement, past presidents of the congregation, members who have become disaffected with our shul, current and past clergy, other synagogue presidents and many, many current members. Along with the TI board of directors, we are studying all options to secure our future, with no preconceived ideas. We want you to know that we do have the funds for payroll, utilities, insurance, kitchen supplies, etc., but we will most likely need to draw on our available credit line by the end of this year -- a prospect we would prefer to avoid. In addition, please know that during the past year the Temple Israel Fund (a remnant of the Beth Tikva-Temple Israel merger) has only funded one item, an improvement over previous years. We used the fund to purchase additional cemetery plots. Purchasing these plots allowed us to replenish our supply so they can be available for purchase and to hold the line on increased costs for members. The outlay to make this group purchase is being repaid to the Temple Israel Fund with the sale of each plot. Please realize, as well, that while you save money by buying the plots from Tikvat Israel, we also make a small profit. The profit made on each plot is additional nondues revenue to our congregation. As for the Temple Israel Fund, the stock market rise has helped the fund recoup its losses from the recent recession. We know this Bulletin column alone goes only so far as to explain our current situation and perhaps raises other questions. That is why the board is working to schedule a special congregational meeting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 3. The agenda is not finalized as we write this column, Minhah, Se udah Sh lishit and Learning Remaining Membership Directories but the tentative agenda includes these topics: How does the recast budget place us financially? What is our plan to secure a rabbi, both short- and long-term? Update for a clergy endowment campaign. How is our collaborative religious school doing in its first year? Update on our Early Childhood Center. What collaborative partnerships (in addition to those we have already created) should and could we form with other faithbased organizations? Please watch for the announcement of this special congregational meeting, and much more importantly, please plan to attend. We encourage you to talk to friends you know who may have not attended services or a function in many months. We will do what we can to conveniently schedule it (during the daylight hours), organize transportation for those who need it and provide child care. We truly want everyone to have an opportunity to discuss our future together. As we have said many times, our greatest strength is our members. We are a caring, unpretentious, creative, modest and intelligent sacred kehillot one whose demise is far too premature to report! One Shabbat afternoon a month, Tikvat Israel hosts Minhah, Se udah Sh lishit [the third Shabbat meal] and learning a wonderful way to spend the waning hours of Shabbat. Rabbi Abramson will conduct a study session/discussion for adults. Special parallel learning is held for children. We ll conclude Shabbat with Ma ariv and Havdalah. The rabbi s upcoming topics: * March 23: S firat Ha-Omer Does It Really Count for Us? * April 27: Preparing for Sinai Where Are We Going? The shul s office still has a small quantity of printed versions of the membership directory that was updated last fall. If you want one, stop by while the supply lasts. 3

4 From the Rabbi: The Seder Transports Us by Rabbi David L. Abramson The Passover seder is one of the most dramatic and colorful experiences of the Jewish year. It s a grand celebration of freedom. It s great theater. And it has many of the trappings of a theatrical production. We gather an impressive array of props: the seder plate, laden with such exotic items as a roasted shank bone and bitter herbs; wine cups, symbolizing the joy of the holiday and the four-fold promise of divine redemption that our ancestors heard in Egypt; the matzot, unleavened bread, which we eat to remember both the oppressive poverty of the Israelites lives in Egypt and the haste with which they miraculously left. Our tables are the stage and we become the actors as we sit down to begin the seder. The haggadah is our script, and we meticulously follow its directions to create a myriad of dramatic theatrical experiences. We re transported in time and space back to ancient Egypt, where we triumphantly march with the Israelites into freedom; back to a dark cave in B nai B rak, where our ancient sages are discussing the exodus from Egypt until the early hours of the morning; back to ghetto communities of medieval Europe, where our ancestors, often surrounded by hostile, threatening neighbors, twice a year open their doors and defiantly invoke God s wrath upon the nations that do not recognize God. The seder even transports us to the future -- to the messianic age, when all people will live in true freedom, dignity and peace. There s a curious statement made toward the beginning of the seder, when we uncover the matzah and declare, Ha lahma anya, this is the bread of affliction. Written in terse Aramaic, the paragraph concludes with a line that lacks pronouns: Hashta avdei; l shanah ha-ba ah b nei horin. Some would translate this line as This year we are enslaved; next year may we be free. Others would translate it as: This year some are enslaved; next year may they be free. Which translation is correct? To whom are we referring when we make this declaration at our seder -- to ourselves or to others? In a way, that depends on our particular circumstances. For Jews who were not free and for Jews who still are not free, this line in the seder voices their hope to enjoy freedom in the coming year: This year we are enslaved; next year may we be free. For many Jews like us, who for the most part consider ourselves free, this line is a reminder of those who do not enjoy the freedom that we enjoy -- and a reminder of our responsibility toward them: This year some are enslaved; next year may they be free. But in a sense, this curious line from the haggadah refers to us as well, for as long as there are any among us who are not free, none of us can consider himself really free. The seder, then, offers us an interesting, dramatic forum in which to reflect upon freedom: its meaning to us, our devotion to it and our commitment to achieving it in the world around us. Hashta avdei; l shanah haba ah b nei horin. This year we are enslaved; next year may we all be free. Rabbi Abramson s Shul Schedule Rabbi Abramson s upcoming twicemonthly Shabbatot at Tikvat Israel will take place on March 8-9, March 22-23, April and April Following Shabbat morning services and kiddush, you can join Rabbi Abramson for a stimulating exploration of timely Jewish topics on these dates: March 9: Traveling Through Time and Space: The Journey of Pesah. April 13: Why Say Hallel on Yom Ha-Atzma ut? Join the rabbi and your Tikvat Israel family for Shabbat services and Jewish learning. You also can schedule a weekday appointment with the rabbi through the synagogue office. Plans Developing for Congregational Journey to Israel in late October Have you been to Israel? Have you been thinking about going or travelling there again? Would you enjoy touring Israel this fall with fellow Tikvat Israel members? If you answered any of these questions in the affirmative, you might consider a group trip being planned by Barbara Ridberg, longtime Tikvat Israel member and lifetime Hebrew language educator who is now offering Hebrew classes at TI. She has travelled many times to Israel, both professionally and personally, and has built a wonderful network of Israeli colleagues and friends. Ridberg has set a theme for the two-week trip in late October and early November: Mifgashim u-me-komot: People and Places. She is organizing the itinerary with a friend who works as a licensed tour guide after a career in Israel as a teacher and principal. The trip will include visits to Tel Aviv, Be er Sheva, S deh Boker (David Ben Gurion s kibbutz in the Negev), Neveh Shalom/Wahat al-salam (an Israeli Jewish/Israeli Arab village), Mod in (the first planned community in Israel), Jerusalem, Haifa, Galil and the southern Golan. Participants will have the opportunity to visit Kibbutz Beit Hashitta, the community with which the JCC of Greater Washington maintained a sister relationship for 25 years. Visits to three Bedouin villages and meetings with their leaders also are being planned. In addition, the TI travel group will meet various Israelis to talk about aspects of Israeli life, including education, politics, military, Israeli Arab/Israeli Jewish issues, Israel s ethnic communities and Beit Shemesh/ Mateh Yehuda (Washington, D.C. s Sister City). Want to learn more? Contact the synagogue office ( ) or Barbara Ridberg (BarbaraRidberg@gmail.com). She will provide more details, including costs, as they develop, and invite you to future meetings about this special trip. 4

8 Adult Education Slates Two Events on End of Life and Influencing Public Opinion The Adult Education Committee at Tikvat Israel has planned two events over the next two months. Biblical Views of the End of Life, on Thursday evenings, March 7 and 14, after minyan. This course, led by Gideon Amir, will examine the meaning and understanding of death in the Bible. Some of the issues to be covered: Why do we die? Did Adam and Eve, Eve alone or neither bring death upon us? What happens when we die? Does the Bible say anything about afterlife? What are the Biblical views on resurrection and God s use of death as a consequence for human actions? Amir, a Jerusalem native, holds degrees from Hebrew University and the Weizmann Institute of Science. After a long career as a practitioner and teacher of computer science, he enrolled in a graduate program at Baltimore Hebrew University, where he earned a master s degree in Judaic studies. Sunday Morning Café, Getting Out the Message on Israel to the American Public, on April 7 at 10 a.m. The café begins with coffee and nosh before an hour-long lecture at 10:30 a.m. Congregant Avy Ashery will talk about getting the message out to Americans about Israel and what our Jewish community can do. Ashery will ask: Have you heard or seen any creative messages that could impact public opinion on TV, radio, printed media, outdoor billboards or transit posters? Where is the campaign to advocate for Israel to the American public? Ashery, a former adviser to the Israeli embassy on public relations, serves as a visual communications adviser to the Congress. The Adult Education Committee seeks ideas for future programs. Contact co-chairs Betsy Miller (bnahmiller@hotmail.com) or Susan Apter (apter4@gmail.com). Film Fest Draws Fans, Rave Reviews by Sally Kram, Israeli Film Festival co-chair The 8 th annual Israeli Film Festival at Tikvat Israel was a smashing success, attracting more than 150 people over its two nights and sparking fascinating dialogue facilitated by Anton Goodman of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington. The two award-winning Israeli films shown over the two weekends of the festival, Footnote and The Human Resources Manager, brought two very different stories to the screen but captured the essence of Israeli film -- deeply internal stories of everyday people. Unlike American films, Israeli films leave the ending open, said Goodman in the talk-back session after the first film. A citizen of Israel, he serves as the federation s community shaliach and Israel engager. It is up to the audience to determine what they believe will happen to the characters after the film concludes, he added. Even without a Hollywood ending, both films were well-known in Hollywood, with Footnote nominated for the Foreign Film Oscar (it lost to an Iranian film in 2012) and The Human Resources Manager winning the Israeli equivalent of the Best Film Oscar, Best Director Oscar and Best Screenplay. The Israeli Film Festival at Tikvat Israel was begun by the Adult Education Committee eight years ago to promote Israeli culture and the arts to the broader Jewish community. Two years ago, the committee began a partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington to bring an Israeli perspective to the talk-back sessions after each film. A bountiful table of fruit, cake and chocolate makes the cold January festival nights more festive as well as more entertaining. Kudos to Adult Education Committee co-chairs Susan Apter and Betsy Miller, my festival co-chair Damon Ehrlich and festival committee members and volunteers Alan Apter, Tony Freedman, Jamie Freedman, Paula Kasper, Carol Chelemer, Lisa Ehrlich, Danny Bachman, Debby Berlyne, Ben Hersh and Michele Eisenberg for their hard work. The festival wouldn t have attracted such a large number of people without the good publicity work of Amy Matathias and Nancy Matheson. And, of course no Simcha is complete without the careful supervision of our meshgichim, Marsha Lyons and Bonnie Cowan. Sam Freedenberg provided his usual steady hand behind the scenes making sure all the details went perfectly while Anita Greenwald took the RSVPs and the custodial staff assisted with set up and cleanup after a late evening. All proceeds support adult education activities and provide seed money for next year s festival. Plans are already under way for the 9 th Israeli Film Festival. Anyone wanting to participate in film selection or festival planning or other adult education programming is welcome to contact Sally Kram at kram@consortium.org. 9 Religious School: Learning Flourishes at all Levels by Martie Adelman, vice president for youth and family Following parent-teacher conferences in January, students at the joint Har Shalom-Tikvat Israel Religious School resumed their classroom studies. The kindergarteners began reading God s Paintbrush and formulated questions about God. The 4 th and 5 th graders had a wonderful Tu B Shevat seder. The 7 th graders toured the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Feb. 3 and held a discussion and a memorial service at the museum. TI s own Avrum Ashery was a substitute teacher in the 5 th grade classroom, and he explained how he uses Hebrew letters in his art work, which depicts biblical and other events of Jewish history. The classroom curriculum in February focused on Purim and then our students enjoyed two Purim celebrations. In addition to the wonderful carnival at Tikvat Israel, our students joined Har Shalom the following weekend to again celebrate Purim. Then it was time for students to turn their attention to Pesach. The students in grades kindergarten through 4th grade are scheduled to hold a model seder with a well-deserved Pesach break from school following in late March. Mazel Tov In April, parents of 5 th, 6 th, and 7 th graders are invited to join their students in the classroom to discuss the book that each class is reading. On April 7, a Chagigat HaSiddur workshop will be held for 3 rd - grade parents. In response to the positive feedback from Tikvat Israel parents, we have begun discussions with Har Shalom to renew our joint Religious School for the school year. We also initiated a Lunch and Learn program with Rabbi Abramson on the fourth Shabbat of each month. High school students met with the rabbi after Shabbat services in December to share a delicious lunch and discuss the Jewish response to Christmas celebrations. Everybody shared their views, and the discussion was fascinating. We subsequently introduced a Lunch and Learn get-together with the rabbi and younger students in February. We are alternating months so that every child at Tikvat Israel gets a chance to chat with and learn from Rabbi Abramson. 10 Youth Corner: Chocolate Seder, Hypnotist, Lag B Omer BBQ by Lynn Berk, director of youth and family programming I would like to thank everyone who stepped up to help out with events and programs while I was out recovering from knee replacement surgery. Yasher Koach to Bonnie Cowan, who shopped and fed various groups; to Amy Matathias, who took over as acting youth director and opened and closed the building, went to staff meetings and covered programs during my absence; to Stephanie Levy and Robin Lempert, who drove me to and from meetings and the office; to Stuart Lempert and Neil Kram, who took a list of kids from me and turned them into Kadima and USY basketball teams; and to numerous others who lent a hand while I was out. I could not have been out of the synagogue for almost three weeks without the support of both lay people and the TI professional staff. My knee is well on the road to recovery, and I am back at work, moving a little slower but moving without pain and feeling so much better. Our USYers are raising money for Tikun Olam, the USY s international charity and for chapter scholarships by handling coat checking on Sunday, March 10 at the gala at Shaare Tefila to celebrate Rabbi Layman s 18 years as rabbi. Last time they ran the coat check at a Shaare Tefila event, the congregants were more than generous, enabling our group to raise several hundred dollars for its causes. The Youth Department will celebrate Passover with a chocolate seder on Sunday, March 17, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Cost is $3 for members, $5 for non-members. The seder will be conducted by members of Kadima and USY. We will partake of chocolate milk, chocolate eggs, chocolatecovered matzahs, green M&M s for karpas and so much more. It is a fun way to get into the Passover spirit. To reserve your child s place at the seder table, contact your group adviser or Lynn Berk at lberk@comcast.net. Montgomery County Jewish Teens, a group open to all Jewish youth in the 8 th through 12 th grades, will host a Shabbat dinner with a hypnotist entertainer on Friday evening, March 15, at TI. The menu will feature real Southern Fried Chicken. The evening begins with Kabbalat Shabbat services, led by USYers, followed by dinner and then the hypnotist. Watch for flyers and s with the details. The Seaboard Region s annual day at King s Dominion is set for Sunday, April 21. Our Kadima and USY chapters will participate. 12 Congregants Shower Gorban with Praise, But He Deflects Limelight More than 150 congregants joined in a well-deserved tribute on Jan. 25 to a twotime past president, but the man of the hour, Larry Gorban, in inimitable fashion, tried to deflect the attention to others. Gorban, who served presidential terms at both Tikvat Israel and Temple Israel (which merged with Beth Tikva in 1997), was feted for his mild-mannered congregational leadership as the guest of honor at a Kabbalat Shabbat service and multi-course meal in the social hall. Event organizer Carol Chelemer announced $9,500 was contributed to a gift registry in Gorban s honor. Rather than accept personal gifts, he had identified a series of synagogue needs, many of them affiliated with the shul s kitchen, where Gorban has committed some of his most memorable volunteer time over the past 16 years. (Notably, he prepared an array of desserts for his tribute dinner.) The funds will be used to buy crock pots, mandolines, a food mill, linen rack and flatware, as well as a new water fountain and rear gutters for the building. During the dinner, Gorban also learned that congregants had made a contribution in his honor to the Larry Gorban Fund at Shepherd s Table in Silver Spring, a support agency for homeless adults that he helped to establish a generation ago. His wife, Bobbi, a longtime president of the TI Women s Network, received a pomegranate-shaped honey dish from the event organizers. Current TI co-presidents Rodney Matheson and Jonathan Solomon delivered salutes to their predecessor, with Solomon quipping, We now have two guys doing the work of one. In his own self-deprecating remarks, Gorban admitted he preferred to play a low-key, behind-the-scenes role as the synagogue s leader and a perennial board member. Larry and Bobbi Gorban showed up in festive attire at a previous Purim celebration at Tikvat Israel. (Photo by Felicia R. Black) What Does Larry Really Stand For? Editor s Note: This is a truncated version of the tribute delivered to Larry Gorban by Rodney Matheson, a TI co-president, at the tribute event on Jan. 25. What does Larry stand for? L stands for loving. Larry truly loves Tikvat Israel, the members, the work we do together as a congregation and what we have built. A stands for affectionate. Larry, Bobbi and I have a running joke that he is the kissing president, in that when walking around behind the Torah he would kiss many of the women attending services that day. R stands for respectful. Larry is one of the most respectful people I know. No matter how hard people try to push his buttons, Larry remains calm and does not lash out, even when under attack. R stands for ravishing. Oh yeah, we asked Bobbi for some of her comments about Larry and apparently she finds him ravishing. Y stands for youthful. How else do you describe a man who would work a full-time job, come to shul for a meeting and then go into the kitchen to bake until 2 a.m., before waking up and going off to work again? 12

13 On Playing President, Controlling the Thermostat and Coping With Anxiety Editor s Note: These are excerpts from Larry Gorban s remarks at his tribute dinner program on Jan. 25. Co-presidents Rodney Matheson and Jonathan Solomon told me that originally this was scheduled to be a roast but they realized I was too easy a target so there was no challenge. They then faced the challenge of coming up with the big ticket items that defined my presidency. They even wrote me to get my perspective on what I thought my major accomplishments were as president. I gave their request a great deal of thought as I really am uncomfortable bragging about myself. My presidency was not marked by those flashy accomplishments that people like to boast about increasing membership by 20%, having budget surpluses, bringing in donors at the $1 million and above level. * * * The first accomplishment was getting up early enough EVERY Saturday to make it to synagogue to sit on the bimah by 9:30. Second, Board meetings began and ended on time at least in some cases. Thirdly, I negotiated with Art Fabel to increase the thermostat from 45 degrees to 50 degrees. I actually was aiming for 55 but had to settle for what I could get. Finally, I met with the cantor to tell her the congregation really enjoyed the challenge of her introducing new melodies (which no one had heard before) into the service. However, I thought her idea of dressing like Nikki Minaj and making Adon Olam into a rap song was a bit of a stretch even for TI. She agreed to hold off at least for the time being. * * * After the merger (between Temple Israel and Beth Tikva), Bobbi and I remained active this time at Tikvat Israel. There was no discussion on our part this was just what we wanted to do. Why should it be any different than we had done before? I should have sensed that there were problems ahead when Bobbi attended one of her first Sisterhood meetings and then announced to me that she was to become the President. She remained in that role for 7 years. * * * When Sam (Freedenberg) asked me to run as vice president I told him that I d do this as I liked and respected him so much but would only run as second vice president as there was NO WAY I would become president again and I wanted to make that clear from the beginning. Somehow things didn t go quite as planned. When the president s position became vacant, there was no first vice president just me. * * * Now many of you don t know that I have something called a General Anxiety Disorder no one knows what causes it, but even when there is nothing to really worry about I am often anxious. When there is actually something to worry about, watch out. My credo is don t put off worrying until tomorrow what you can start worrying about today. So on one of my visits to my doctor when she asked what was happening, I told her that I was becoming president of the synagogue. She just stared at me how far could she increase my meds before entering into a catatonic state. * * * So that brings me to the natural question of why did I or why does anybody agree to become president or leader of a non-profit organization, such as our synagogue. Of course, there are a few where ego plays a role some people actually consider the challenges fun. But I think for the most part the people who agree to take over leadership roles are not necessarily convinced that they are great leaders as much as they are committed to the organization and are willing to use whatever talents they have to help the organization prosper and grow. For me, I hold no illusions about my leadership skills. However, I can tell you that my heart was in everything I did and I did the best that I could. * * * The success of Tikvat Israel is up to us for we are the community. If we all truly believe that and act as a community, I am optimistic in what the future will bring. May we all continue to go from strength to strength. Solomon s Wisdom About His Predecessor Editor s Note: These are excerpts from the tribute to Larry Gorban delivered at a synagogue dinner program in his honor by Jonathan Solomon, a TI co-president, on Jan. 25 Larry led our synagogue through some challenging times. Perhaps the most significant challenge was the transition from having a rabbi of 32 years retire and then to find a replacement. The process was completed with care and professionalism and EVERYONE got a chance to share their input. * * * You could find him in all manner of places working shoulder-to-shoulder with other TI members. Carrying books for a book sale. Working on a cleanup day. And working countless hours creating delicious desserts and other foods in our kitchen. Larry was also there to support individual members in time of need. * * * I am fairly certain that being thanked in the manner of this wonderful and meaningful manner is pretty far down Larry s list of preferences. He is a very humble person. Larry mentioned to me that he sees tonight s event as an opportunity to express appreciation to all those who share their time, skills, and other resources with the synagogue. * * * When I wrote to him about my vision for tonight, he responded: I prefer not to be singled out but rather cited as an example of someone who is committed to this community and tries to do his best to support it in whatever capacity called upon. This is also true of others and is a spirit we need to instill in as many of our congregants as possible. 13

14 TI Mailbox Abundant Generosity On behalf of Linkages to Learning at Harmony Hills Elementary School, I would like to thank Tikvat Israel Congregation for its generous monetary and gift card contributions to our 2012 giving project and for the recent donation of 163 items for the Winter Coat Drive for our students and families. It is because of you and other donors contributions that this year we were able to provide free meals to over 70 families from our school for the holiday season. We were also able to provide winter jackets, hats and gloves to keep our kids and families warm on these cold days! Your thoughtfulness is truly making a difference in the lives of so many families in our school community. We could not do what we do without donors such as you. We deeply appreciate your generosity. Karla Fuentes Site Coordinator, Linkages to Learning Sincere Thanks for Support Thank you to the congregation for your messages of sympathy and for supporting the shiva minyanim at our home following the death of my mother, Margaret Gerstle. In addition, the meal of consolation contributed by Tikvat Israel was deeply appreciated. Debbie Levine A Sturdy Cleanup Crew Thanks to all the people who spent so many hours on Sunday, Feb. 3, to help the cleanup/clearout of the storage areas in the Social Hall. It s amazing how much work was done removing items that are no longer of use to the shul and freeing up space to better store the items that are useful. We even found a few treasures and some history of our shul, such as the cornerstone from Temple Israel. The many people who worked so hard deserve a hearty thank you from us all, and I know that they feel good about what they were able to do for TI. For those of you who could not come and help this time, there will be other opportunities to help make TI a better place for all. Alan Apter Dynamic Dinner Program Congratulations to all who helped plan and cook and serve the Shabbat evening dinner in honor of Larry Gorban. It was a successful evening with lots of good food and a good program. I am very proud of all who helped with the evening. They need to be recognized. Mimi Meltzer Tax Law Benefits for Shul Did you know that the new federal tax laws (the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012) allows seniors to contribute part of their IRA Required Minimum Distributions to TI while potentially reducing their taxes? Check with your tax professional for further details about Qualified Charitable Distributions from an IRA to Charity to see if this can help you save on your taxes while you help the synagogue. Steve Raucher Holiday Cheer The Social Action Committee thanks those who helped us bring recent Jewish holiday celebrations to Aspenwood Senior Living Center. Our Hanukkah dreydel party was a big success with TI members Robbi Cohen and Beth Smith joining the game playing. Leah Keilsohn purchased and assembled the goody bags for the Jewish residents. Marvin Sohn lit the menorah and led the prayers, and I organized the games and led the songfest. Our Aspenwood dreydel master certificate was awarded to a delighted resident. Director Sheila Hall arranged for latkes, apple sauce, sour cream and beverages. The Purim celebration was led by Marcelle Copaken, who read the Megilla to the residents. I handed out groggers and Shaloch Manot. Hamantashen and drinks were supplied by Aspenwood s activities director. The Social Action Committee is pleased to continue bringing holiday cheer. Roma Sohn A Shabbat-Only Shul? On Shabbat, particularly Saturday morning, our service attendance is robust, but attendance at services at any other time (e.g., weekday and Sunday minyanim whether morning or evening) is lacking. As someone who worked with Ted Kram a couple of years ago to refresh our list of volunteers to attend weekday evening minyanim (and many thanks to those who send reminders out to those volunteers), I am disappointed each time I see or learn we failed to assemble a group of 10 adults for a prayer service at which Kaddish could be said. Is it time to recognize current reality and suspend our weekday minyanim? Are there changes regarding weekday minyanim that would revive attendance? My hope is that our Religious Practices Committee, in cooperation with Rabbi Abramson and Cantor Helzner, will address the topic of non- Shabbat minyanim. Carol Chelemer 14

15 Passover Hospitality at TI Means Matching Seder Hosts With Guests All who are hungry, let them come and eat is not just something we read in the Haggadah once a year. It is said Abraham and Sarah placed such great importance on welcoming others that they kept the walls of their tents open so that they could see potential guests from a long way off and ran to prepare for them. At Tikvat Israel, we strive to emulate this example and offer members of our community the opportunity to be either a host or a guest at a Passover Seder. Congregants young and old who do not have a Seder to attend and those who have a seat or two to fill at the Seder table are asked to complete the form below. Mail the completed form to or deposit with the shul office by March 15. Alternatively, you may contact Hope Levy Kott, hospitality coordinator, at or hkott@aol.com to make the arrangements..
