3 M onday: Warning There are many people these days who think they have all the answers: philosophers think they know the meaning of life; scientists think they know how things work; scholars think they know the answers to life; preachers think they know all about God. Unfortunately, very few people know nearly as much as they think they know. That s why the Bible warns against: Mark 12:38 1 (scholars) Col 2:8 and 2 Matt 16:12 3 of the Pharisees and Sadducees (heresies) The Bible also says to avoid: 1Tim 6:20 and, 4 oppositions of 5 falsely so called 2Tim 2:23 and 6 Titus 3:9 and,, 7 Fortunately, the Bible not only contains God s revelation about spiritual matters but is also completely accurate in matters relating to philosophy, science, etc. Write the following verses in the table below to show what scientific law the Bible explains (long before science discovered it): Gen 1:9; Gen 2:7; Gen 7:11; Deut 33:13-14; 2Sam 22:16; Josh 10:12-14; Job 25:5; Job 26:7; Job 28:5; Job 28:25; Job 36:27-28; Job 38:24; Job 38:25-27; Eccl 1:6; Isa 40:22; Acts 17:26; 1Cor 15:39; 1Cor 15:41; Col 1:17; Heb 11:3. Scripture There is one worldwide ocean. Geology & Geophysics There are springs of water in the oceans. Air pressure. Not until Galileo (1630) did scientists know that air had weight. There are valleys and mountains in the ocean. The earth's crust covers a layer of molten matter (lava and magma). Meteorology The sun's energy powers the wind. Lightning causes rain. 4 The water-vapor cycle produces rain. Botany Photosynthesis. Astrology A computer reenactment of the universe s history shows a day is missing. The moon does not shine, it only reflects the light of the sun. There is a hole, or empty place located directly north in the universe. The earth travels in a circle around the sun. Stars have different intensities. Atomic structure. Physics An unknown force holds atoms together. Biology Human bodies contain the same 17 elements as dirt. All human blood has a common gene [from Adam and Eve?]. All animals do not have the same kind of flesh. Preview This week you ll see compare two opposing beliefs to explain the universe s origin: evolution & creation. One of these contradicts scientific evidence but it hasn t stopped many people from believing it anyway. The other one is the only plausible explanation for the origin of the universe. Evolution: the universe began [something came from nothing] between 13 and 20 billion years ago by a random, cosmic explosion (or expansion) of a subatomic ball that hurled space, time, matter and energy in all directions. Everything the whole universe came from this initial speck of infinite density (existing outside of space and time). Since then this newly existent space, time, matter and energy evolved into remarkably-designed and fully-functional stars, galaxies and planets, including life on our earth. Creation: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Last week you learned that Jesus IS God (John 1:1-2) his eternal nature. This week you will learn how Jesus created all things. 5 T uesday: John 1:3 Creator John 1:1-3 go all the way back to the beginning (just like in Gen 1:1). Fill in the blanks below with the who, what and when of creation from these verses. 6 W ednesday: How: conservation of energy One of the foundational laws of science is that the total amount of energy in the universe remains constant. Energy can be changed into another form (such as matter), but it can never be created or destroyed (except by an external, independent force). So according to this law, the universe now functions with the same amount of energy/matter it has always had (eternal it had no beginning). There are two problems with this explanation: 1. The universe that now exists (matter) came from nothing. 2. Some external force was needed to jump start it (Big Bang Theory). Science has no possible explanation for where this matter and energy came from. But Gen 1:1 explains precisely where they come from ( 52 ). Conclusion All through the Bible Satan uses a common tactic to try and ruin God s people: lie. It takes many forms but it always opposes God s truth and can be traced back to the garden of Eden.
