October 5, John: Faith and Fellowship Lesson Scripture: 1 John 3: a HCSB Memory Verse Everyone who remains in Him does not sin; everyone who sins has not seen Him or known Him. 1 John 3:6 Dig Deeper? You can do additional reading and research on 1 John using the Intervarsity Commentary at and Step by Step through the Week Monday: Begin your week of study by praying that the Holy Spirit would reveal God s truth to you and provide the wisdom you will need to obey God s word. Read and meditate on the 1 John 3:1-10. What words, phrases, or ideas stand out to you? What truth(s) could the Lord be revealing to you? Reread the passage. What is God teaching you about fellowship with Him and/or other believers? Reread the passage. What do you need to be praying for based on the truth God has revealed to you? Tuesday: Read 1 John 3:1-3. If possible, read the passage in two or three different versions of the Bible. Multiple versions are available at Observe: 1 John 3:1-3 What does this passage say about who we are now and what we will become?

Locate the occurrences of the phrase God s children. What do these verse tell us about being a child of God? Refer back to 1 John 2:28-29 and compare to 1 John 3:2. Who is He? What context clues in these verses lead you to that conclusion? Examine: 1 John 3:1-3 WHO ARE CHILDREN OF GOD? The Bible is clear that all people are God s creation (Col 1:16), and that God loves the entire world (John 3:16), but only those who are born again are children of God. In Scripture, the lost are never referred to as children of God. Ephesians 2:3 tells us that before we were saved we were by nature objects of wrath. Romans 9:8 says that it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring. Instead of being born as God s children, we are born in sin, which separates us from God and aligns us with Satan as God s enemy (James 4:4; 1 John 3:8). Jesus said, If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. (John 8:42). Then a few verses later (John 8:44), Jesus told the Pharisees that they belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. We become children of God when we are saved because we are adopted into God s family through our relationship with Jesus Christ (Gal 4:5-6; Eph 1:5). (Michael Houdmann, gotquestions, org) Read John 1:12; 11:49-52 and Romans 8: Based on these verses, describe the process of how someone becomes a child of God. Apply: 1 John 3:1-3 How have you experienced the Father s great love for you?

Wednesday: Read 1 John 3:4-6. If possible, read the passage in two or three different versions of the Bible. Multiple versions are available at Observe: 1 John 3:4-6 Who are the three parties (individuals or groups) John mentions in this passage? What is the message about sin concerning each of these parties? Reread 1 John 2:1-2. What are the similarities between this passage and 1 John 3:4-6? Examine: 1 John 3:4-6 FREE FROM SIN? Sin can be defined as "any thought, action, or attitude that falls short of God's holiness" (Rom 3:23). Sin has many layers. There are specific actions or thoughts which are sinful. Murder, adultery, and theft are sins (Ex 20:1 17). Even the desire to commit murder, adultery, and theft are sins (Matt 5:21, 28). But sin goes deeper than that; we commit sins because we are sinners. Since Adam first sinned in the Garden of Eden (Gen 2:17; 3:17 19), every person born has inherited a sin nature from him (Ps 51:5; Rom 3:23). We cannot help but sin because it is our nature to do so. A baby does not have to be taught to be selfish and demanding. That comes naturally. However, we were not created to be sinful. We were designed by God in His own image (Gen 1:27). We were designed to live in fellowship with our Creator. But because of sin, we cannot enter His presence (Hbk 1:13). When Jesus died on the cross, He took upon Himself all the sin of the world (2 Cor 5:21; 1 John 2:2). He also reversed the curse of our old nature, which keeps us enslaved to sinful passions and desires (Gal 3:10, 13). Before a person meets Christ, he or she is enslaved by that sin nature (Rom 7:25; 2 Pet 2:19). At the moment of conversion, we are given a new nature that has been freed from sin (Rom 6:18; 8:2). To be free from sin means that those who have made Jesus the Lord of their life are no longer enslaved by sin. We have the power, through the Holy Spirit, to live victoriously over sin (1 Cor 15:56 67). Just like we once followed fleshly desires, those who are "in Christ Jesus" now follow the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:14; Gal 5:24). Because we live in a fallen world and are still fleshly creatures, we will still occasionally sin (1 John 1:9; 2:1; Rom 7:21 22). But those who follow Christ do not make sin a lifestyle choice (1 John 2:1 6; Rom 6:2). To be

free from sin means it no longer wields the power it once did. The stranglehold of selfishness, greed, and lust has been broken. In verse 6, the literal Greek translation of the phrase does not sin reads does not keep on sinning. What, then, is this verse saying about the Christian and sin? Apply: 1 John 3:4-6 If you abide in Christ, and His Spirit dwells within you, why do you still struggle with sin? Thursday: Read 3:7-10a. If possible, read the passage from a different version of the Bible. Observe: 1 John 3:7-10a What are the two comparisons John makes in this passage? Find each occurrence of the word devil. What do these verses tell us about the devil? Look at 3:1-3, 3:4-6, and 3:7-10. What does the Lord (He) accomplish for those who remain in Him? (Hint: there is at least one thing in each section)

Examine: 1 John 3:7-10a WHO IS SATAN OR THE DEVIL? People's beliefs concerning Satan range from the silly to the abstract from a little red guy with horns who sits on your shoulder urging you to sin, to an expression used to describe the personification of evil. The Bible, however, gives us a clear portrait of who Satan is and how he affects our lives. Put simply, the Bible defines Satan as an angelic being who fell from his position in heaven due to sin and is now completely opposed to God, doing all in his power to thwart God's purposes. Satan was created as a holy angel. Isaiah 14:12 possibly gives Satan s pre-fall name as Lucifer. Ezekiel 28:12-14 describes Satan as having been created a cherub, apparently the highest created angel. He became arrogant in his beauty and status and decided he wanted to sit on a throne above that of God (Isa 14:13-14; Ezek 28:15; 1 Tim 3:6). Satan s pride led to his fall. Notice the many I will statements in Isaiah 14: Because of his sin, God permanently removed Satan from his exalted position and role. Satan became the ruler of this world and the prince of the power of the air (John 12:31; 2 Cor 4:4; Eph 2:2). He is an accuser (Rev 12:10), a tempter (Matt 4:3; 1 Thess 3:5), and a deceiver (Gen 3;2 Cor 4:4; Rev 20:3). His very name means adversary or one who opposes. Another of his titles, the devil, means slanderer. Even though he was cast out of heaven, he still seeks to elevate his throne above God. He counterfeits all that God does, hoping to gain the worship of the world and encourage opposition to God's kingdom. Satan will do anything and everything in his power to oppose God and those who follow God. However, Satan s destiny is sealed an eternity in the lake of fire (Rev 20:10). Read Genesis 3:1-19. How does this story relate to the message of 1 John 3:7-10? Apply: 1 John 3:7-10a When have you seen the Enemy destroy the fellowship in a church? How have you seen God restore fellowship in a church? Friday: Read 1 John 3:1-10 and the following devotional by Octavius Winslow:

Whoever is born of God does not commit sin; for his seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 John 3:9 THESE words have received two interpretations, both of which we believe are equally true. The more general one is, that he who is born of God does not willingly sin, having "put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness," he cannot sin with the full consent and concurrence of the will. He hates it, he fights against it, he resists it. But it may be inquired, is not all sin an act of the will? We reply, not the renewed will. The apostle speaks of two wills in a believer, or rather, the same will under two opposite influences. Thus, Rom. 7:15: "That which I do, I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I." Ver. 19: "For the good that I would, I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do." Few will question that Paul here speaks of himself as a regenerate man. And yet he refers to two antagonist principles dwelling in him the one on the side of holiness, the other on the side of sin. "What I hate, that I do." No man can possibly hate sin, unless he is "born of the Spirit." "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil." And still he says, "what I hate," the sin that is so abhorrent to me "that I do." Is there volition in the act? True philosophy demands that we reply, "Yes." Every sin must be voluntary; if not so, it cannot be sin. Is there the concurrence and consent of the renewed will in the act? True grace demands that we reply, "No." "For what I hate," there is the mark of the regenerate man "that do I," there is the act of the will under the influence of indwelling sin. But there is another and a stronger interpretation of which the passage is susceptible. It is this He that is born of God, as such, sins not at all there is in him a regenerate soul, an indwelling, living principle of grace and holiness, whose natural and constant bias is to holiness. "He" (the new man) "cannot sin, because he is born of God." "He cannot sin;" why? "because his seed remains in him;" and what is that seed? "Incorruptible," "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible." In accordance with Christ's own words, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." It is spiritual, holy, "from above," "the Divine nature," it "cannot sin, because it is born of God." Again, we beg the reader to mark this great evidence of regeneration. "Whoever is born of God does not commit sin." He does not commit it with the total, absolute, and complete assent and concurrence of the renewed will. He does not give himself over to sin "with greediness." He "would do good." He hates sin. Grace reigns, not sin. Sin dwells in him, but does not govern it has power, but does not rule it torments, but does not reign with a continued, unbroken supremacy; in accordance with the promise, "sin shall not have dominion over you." It may for a moment triumph, as it did in David, in Solomon, in Peter, and in a host of other eminently holy men; yet still the promise is verified, as we see in the restorings of the blessed Spirit in their spirit and conduct, in their humblings and confessions, and their holy and upright walk with God in after-years. Reader, have you ever been made sensible of the inward plague? What do you know of the warfare within of "the flesh lusting against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh"? Your honest reply will decide the great question, whether you are born of God.
