Write the following verses in the correct column of the table below to show wrong ways to get things: 1Sam 8:3, Deut 25:13-14, Exod 20:15, Ezek 22:12. Bribe Extort (threaten) Steal Cheat Write the following verses in the correct column of the table below to show acceptable places to get help: 2Chr 30:24, 1Sam 17:17-18, 2Sam 17:27-29, Acts 4:32-37, Luke 11:5-8. Church Gov t Friends Family Neighbors Preview This week you will study two men who had needs and found help in an unusual place. John 4:46-54: The first man was in desperate need of healing for his servant. John 5:1-16: The second man also has a need for healing (this time for himself). In both cases you will see the limits they placed on Jesus and how he overcame those limits. Bible Reading: Psalm 78 Meditation Verse: Psalm 78:41 Write the meditation verse on a 3X5 card. STUDY Through the Bible Jesus: limited? (13.23) 3

T uesday: Limited faith: believes The first passage (John 4:46-54) deals with a man with a special need. Vs. 54 says this is the 10 miracle that Jesus did in Galilee (the first being to turn 11 into 12 vs. 46). Historical background came from: 13 to: 14 supplicant: 15 from: 16 problem:, 17 request:, 18 Spiritual significance Vs. 48 explains what is true of every Jew, Except ye see, 19 will not believe. This is perfectly in character for the Jews. Apparently, they are right brain dominant. Therefore they are not only hard-wired by God to respond to visual signs but according to 1Cor 1:22 they 20 a sign (but the Greeks left brain: verbal seek after wisdom) in order to verify who is from God and who is not (John 4:48). Unfortunately, they went beyond their God-given nature and demanded signs (even though Jesus entire life was a sign to anyone who would see). According to Matthew 12:38-39 this showed they were an and 21 generation. Vs. 49 shows the nobleman s opinion of Jesus in the title he uses,. 22 It also shows his level of belief, 23 ere my child die. In other words, if you don t come physically and do it, it won t happen. That s why Jesus said they needed a sign. So Jesus tested his faith and said, ; 24 4 Jesus: limited? (13.23) STUDY Through the Bible ye thy son liveth. Fortunately, the man 25 the 26 that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way, thus demonstrating his increased faith. That was rewarded in vs. 51: And 27 he was now going down [after he acted in faith], his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. Vs reveal that after learning the healing came at the same time Jesus said Thy son liveth, he 28 (even more than before) and also his whole. 29 Bible Reading:??? Meditation Verse: John 4:50 Write the meditation verse on a 3 X 5 card. Review the previous meditation verses.

W ednesday: Limited faith: increased Limited faith is not really an unusual thing in the Bible (or in real life). And it s not necessarily a bad thing. It may just be the stage of growth you re in (like going from infant to child to teen to young adult to mature adult). You ve already studied one way to measure faith your opinion of who or what Jesus is (as demonstrated by Nicodemus). The nobleman demonstrates another evidence of faith your opinion of Jesus ability (can he heal by word only or does he need to be physically present?). A good example of growing in faith is Abraham. Heb 11:8-19 lists him as a man of. 30 But it was only after 25 years of testing (Gen 11-21) that Abraham was finally ready to receive God s ultimate blessing a son. God s first call came sometime before he was 75 years old but Isaac wasn t born until he was 31 years old. But he also shows a surprising a lack of faith earlier in his life. Use the given references to fill in the blanks showing Abraham s lack of faith. provide food during the : 32 Egypt (Gen 12:10) protect him from : 33 Egypt (Gen 12:11-13) provide a son through 34 (Gen 16:1-4) protect him from : 35 Gerar (Gen 20:11) Paul explains Abraham s growth in faith in Rom 4: Fill in the blanks to show Abraham s growth in faith. Vs. 19: 36 Vs. 20: 37 Vs. 21: 38 Use the references from Matthew to fill in the blanks showing who had little faith (but should have had more). 5:1, 6:30 8: : : Another man with limited faith is in Mark 9: He brought his son to be healed and the disciples couldn t do it. His opinion of Jesus is shown by the title he uses,. 43 vs. 19 Jesus rebukes them for being. 44 In vs. 23 Jesus says all things are possible to him that. 45 STUDY Through the Bible Jesus: limited? (13.23) 5 In In vs. 24 the father calls Jesus 46 (showing a changed opinion) and gives an unusual response, Lord, I ; 47 help thou mine. 48 But instead of rebuking him for his low level of belief Jesus immediately heals the son. Apparently, it was good enough that the man was aware of his lack of faith and willing to grow. So as you can see, faith is not an all or nothing thing. It can and should grow. In fact, one of the ways God evaluates you is according to the 49 of faith you have (Rom 12:3).

So, if you want to have a better rating in God s eyes you need to increase your faith. But how can you do that. Luke 17:5-10 gives three elements for increasing your faith: Seed: size First, it doesn t matter what size your faith is even if it s only as large as a 50 (Luke 17:6a). As long as it s alive it counts (Matt 13:31-32). Say: speech Second, it s important to use it with the right speech 51 the word (Luke 17:6b). When you speak the word of God by faith it produces results (Luke 7:6-9). Serve: action Third, it s important to have the right action willing to 52 (Luke 17:7-10). Write the following words above the correct picture to show what servants do and don t do (while serving): drink, eat, feeding, plowing. Servants Sovereigns List ten instances where you have had limited faith Write Jesus: heals nobleman s son for John 4:46-54 on the Harmony of the Gospels outline. 7 TJohn 5:1-16 records another story of Jesus miraculous power to heal. hursday: Limited gratitude: made whole Historical background Time : 57 People: folk: 58,, 59 Place: a, 60 by the, 61 at, 62 called 63 Event: 64 Expectation: 65 Main character: 66 Problem: 67 Jesus response: to the man Vs. 6-9 show Jesus response upon seeing the man. Vs. 6: There is something miraculous about Jesus: he 68 that the man had been impotent for a long time (how?). So Jesus asks him, Wilt thou be made? 69 Vs. 7: The impotent man shows his attitude/relationship to Jesus by his response, 70 (showing he was at the first level of belief Jesus is just a man]. Even more telling is his answer to the question. Instead of saying yes (as you would expect since he is waiting at the pool where healing takes place), he gives an excuse for why he can t be healed: I have no, 71 when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. In other words, it s not my fault it s everybody else s fault (no one helps me). But if you compare this with Mark 2:2-5 you ll see another man who also was bed-ridden (sick of the 72 ). But he had four men who helped him get to Jesus and be healed. So which of the two sick men do you think was friendlier (and thus, had more friends)? Vs. 8: Fortunately, Jesus looks beyond his excuse and says,, 73 take up thy bed, and. 74 Now whose responsibility is it? He can t blame others now. Vs. 9: The good news is that immediately the man was made 75 [Jesus part], and took up his bed, and 76 [the man s part]. The bad news is that he seems to have no gratitude for what Jesus did (like most people today who think they are owed good things from others). Jews response: to the miracle Vs show the Jews response to the miracle. Vs. 10: Instead of rejoicing with the man because he was cured, the Jews criticized him for carrying his bed on the 77 day. They were more concerned about the 78 than love. Vs. 11: The man instantly resorts to his old tricks (making excuses) by blaming : 79 He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. Vs : So the Jews ask him who told him to do it. But the man doesn t know because Jesus went away (without identifying himself to the multitude). STUDY Through the Bible Jesus: limited? (13.23) 7

Man s response: to Jesus Vs show the man s response to Jesus. Vs. 14: Afterward Jesus findeth him in the, 80 and said unto him, Behold, thou art made : no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. Being made whole probably means more than just physical healing (cured, healed, cleansed, etc.). Since he is told to sin no more it probably also includes spiritual healing (as shown in Mark 2 also). Vs. 15: Unfortunately, the man chooses to report back to the 83 instead of following 84 (out of gratitude for his healing). Vs. 16: The sad conclusion to this story is that the Jews 85 Jesus, and sought to 86 him, because he had done these things on the 87 day. 9 F riday: Limited gratitude: self-righteous Unfortunately, instead of being thankful for the good things in life most people are ungrateful (both in the Bible and today). Use the given references to fill in the response (if any) each person had to being healed. Put + or - after each response to show whether the recipient showed gratitude or not. Reference Recipient Blessing Response +/- Luke 17:11-19 ten lepers Samaritan Acts 3:1-11 lame man Mark 8:22-26 blind man Luke 18:35-43 blind man cleansed whole rise up and walk saw clearly received his sight, 92 John 9:1-38 blind man came seeing, 93 Many people today think they are entitled (deserving) to good things in their life based on some merit of their own. Write the following words in the headings below showing why some people feel entitled to good things education, gender, wealth, position, race, religion Additionally, most people today think being unthankful is only a minor problem (if at all). But the Bible is just as condemning of it as any other sin (maybe more so). Use the references in the table below to fill in the blanks showing what other sins unthankfulness is related to. It is best explained by a parable that Jesus told in Luke 18:9-14. Two men went into the temple to pray (evidence that they were at least religious). Notice each one s claim to righteousness. 13 S unday: Limiting God Some people would say that it s blasphemous to say that God can be limited by men. After all, the Bible clearly states that nothing is too hard for him (Jer 32:17).
