ABMen Everyone is invited to join the ABMen for breakfast at Pegasus (78th & Greenfield Ave.) at 8 a.m., Saturday, May 5, followed by work projects at church. Third Sunday (May 15) suggested non-perishable food item is Canned Vegetables and the hygiene item is Bar Soap. The Communion Offering for the month of May is designated for the Camp Tamarack. Musical Notes FROM THE DIREKTR One of my heroes is Benjamin Keach, a Baptist preacher from the 17 th century.

He was successful in motivating his congregation to follow the lead of scripture which tells us that Christ and his disciples sang a hymn following what we now call the Last Supper.

Keach and his small congregation would help push the singing of hymns forward, creating a foundation for years of text and tune writing that continues today.

4 Musical Notes FROM THE DIREKTR One of my heroes is Benjamin Keach, a Baptist preacher from the 17 th century. Keach felt that congregations should be allowed to sing in worship and worked to convince his own congregation that it was a valid part of worship. He was successful in motivating his congregation to follow the lead of scripture which tells us that Christ and his disciples sang a hymn following what we now call the Last Supper. Validating singing based on scripture helped the people see that they could and should do the same. Keach and his small congregation would help push the singing of hymns forward, creating a foundation for years of text and tune writing that continues today. While many people think that hymns are those songs we find in the book in the pew rack, there are still many people writing new hymns. At various times in recent history, we have had what some call hymn explosions. These are times of great activity in writing both text and tune and these explosions are sometimes centered in specific locations. Most recently, we can see this in the work of Keith and Kristyn Getty, Stuart Towend, Fred Pratt Green, Brian Wren, Ruth Duck, and many others. Hymn singing is an integral part of our worship both for our relationship with God and our relationship with each other. When we join our voices together as one, we are actualizing the body of Christ in that moment. We are following scripture as found in Philippians 2:2 which states then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
