2 Course/Module description: The course will examine the Jewish presence in modern art, in Europe from the period of Emancipation until the Holocaust. The central topics that will be discussed will deal with the questions of identity; the image of a Jew as "the Other"; Orientalism; migration; the cultural and national renaissance; women artists; collecting and Jewish museums; the art of the war, Revolution and the Holocaust. Course/Module aims: The art works created by the artists of Jewish origin will be examined against the major art movements such as Romanticism and Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism, Primitivism, Expressionism and the Avant-Garde. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: The students will learn to identify processes typical for creation and analysis of art created by a minority group. Attendance requirements(%): 90% Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The lectures will be accompanied by Power Point presentations. Course/Module Content: 1. To be a Jew at home and a man outside - education and visual arts 2. Universal aspiration - "a non-jewish Jew" 3. Jews and their fate as an topic in Polish art 4. Orientalism and the the Jewish artist as "the Other" 5. Plight of Jews in Eastern Europe in the mirror of art 6. The image of the Wandering Jew 7.
