1 The Edge Edgefield United Methodist Church Newsletter Richard M. Rudesill Pastor April 2014 London businessman Lindsay Clegg told the story of a warehouse property he was selling. The building had been empty for months and needed repairs. Vandals had damaged the doors, smashed the windows, and strewn trash around the interior. As he showed a prospective buyer the property, Clegg took pains to say that he would replace the broken windows, bring in a crew to correct any structural damage, and clean out the garbage. "Forget about the repairs," the buyer said. "When I buy this place, I'm going to build something completely different. I don't want the building; I want the site." Compared with the renovation God has in mind, our efforts to improve our own lives are as trivial as sweeping a warehouse slated for the wrecking ball. When we become God's, the old life is over (2 Corinthians 5:17). He makes all things new. All he wants is the site and the permission to build. Easter is coming! We celebrate the momentous event in the history of the world about 2,000 years ago when Jesus was raised from the dead. But if the above story says anything, it is that this story is not over! It has become an ongoing reality in our lives. Many of us want to become better people. But this is like repairing an old warehouse that will never be new. Instead, Jesus wants a demolition permit and a building permit to build once again on the property of our lives. Easter can mean new life for us in that we have entirely new hearts and live completely new lives. Offer Jesus your life during this season. The United Methodist Women will have a fundraiser on April 14 at La Campina Mexican Grill in Piney Flats from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. 10% of all proceeds will go to the UMW. Come out and eat, fellowship and raise funds for the United Methodist Women. They will be used to support local missions. Pennies and a Prayer: You will be given a container on Apr. 13. As you pray each day, put in one penny as you pray for the world. Put in another penny as you pray for family, church family, and friends. If you miss your container, they will be available in the vestibule the following Sundays.

3 Why is this night different from all other nights? This is the famous question asked every year at the Jewish festival known as the Passover. It is celebrated, not at a synagogue, but in the home. The family gets together over a meal and they celebrate the Passover meal. It recounts the time when they were freed from slavery in Egypt and led towards the Promised Land. The foods that are eaten that night recount the events themselves. The unleavened bread recounts the fact that they did not have time to let their bread rise when they hurriedly fled Egypt. The horseradish recounts the bitterness of slavery. The Charoset, a mixture of apples, walnuts, and wine, tastes sweet on the mouth at first, but then turns sour after a minute. It recounts the sweetness of freedom, but also the sour note of the suffering of their oppressors. The Jewish people later added a hard boiled or roasted egg that reminds them of the sacrifices that can no longer be sacrificed as there is no longer a Temple in Jerusalem. A bone rests on the plate to remind them of the Passover Lamb which was slain and eaten. The blood of the Lamb was placed over their doorposts when the angel of death came to take the life of all of the Egyptian firstborn. Those with the blood on the doorpost were passed over. Four glasses of wine, each representing something different, are consumed during the course of the meal. Thus, the entire meal recounts the events themselves. All of the joy and sorrow of their freedom and their slavery was wrapped up in the food items celebrated each year. A child asks the question: Why is this night different from all other nights? The family is always the primary and first place of religious instruction. This is definitely true in the Passover celebration! It is celebrated around the family table with games for kids and instruction for adults. When Jesus gathered with his disciples in the Upper Room on Maundy Thursday, he radically redefined family. His family consisted of his disciples. They were now free, not from slavery to Egyptians, but slavery to sin and death. Out of the unleavened bread and the wine glasses of the Passover, Jesus gave us our communion meal. When he raised the cup of redemption, he told us that it was his blood shed for us. The broken bread was his body given for us! Jesus gave us a whole new view to the Communion celebration. Come celebrate with us as we recount these events and celebrate God with us. We will be having a Last Supper meal on April 17, 2014 at 6:30 PM. We will see what God has done for us through his body and blood. (I want to add a special thanks to the members of the United Methodist Women s group here at Edgefield UMC for helping with the meal again this year!) Richard

4 LORD S ACRE SALE THE LORD S ACRE SALE IS SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20? Remember to mark your calendar for this day. We will have breakfast, baked and canned goods, crafts, produce, lunch, a raffle and auction. Collections are underway for our auction. If you have any contacts for local businesses that may be able to donate an item/s or service for our auction, please let Linda Hodge know as soon as possible. You may also wish to donate an item yourself. Gift certificates to restaurants or gift cards to local stores are items that are good sellers. If you go to yard sales and find any large baskets in good shape we can always use them for the baskets for the auction. If you have one at home that you would be willing to recycle, please bring them to Linda Hodge. Thank you!! Our raffle item this year will be an IPad. Details will be posted at a later date for purchasing raffle tickets for this item. Our baskets are a huge part of the auction. Please take time to look at the poster located at the back of the church and sign up for any of the basket/s you would like to donate. If you prefer a different theme that is not on the board, please let Linda Hodge know and she will put it on the list. Thank you so much for your willingness to help. It is almost time for planting gardens. When you are canning this summer why not prepare a few extra jars of your special recipes that can be donated for our canned goods. NO SUBSTITUTIONS OR ADDITIONAL ITEMS ARE ALLOWED DUE TO CUSTOMS REGULATIONS. This includes notes, Bibles, and food items not on the list. Items must be in original packaging. Pack all items in a NEW, FOOD GRADE, 5 gallon bucket with lid. PLEASE DO NOT SEAL THE LIDS as we must open each bucket for inspection upon arrival at the District Office. A $5.00 donation for packing and shipping is to accompany each kit do not put money in the bucket! Church Treasurers should write ONE CHECK to the Johnson City District UMC for the total cost of packing and shipping (ie: 10 buckets equals $50).
