3 Dinosaurs and the Bible Are dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible? It is true that the word dinosaur is not found within the pages of the Bible. The King James Bible was translated in 1611 when the word dinosaur had not even been invented yet. The word dinosaur was not even a word until For most of human history the creatures that we know as dinosaurs were called dragons. Dragons were mentioned in a 1946 dictionary as Now Rare. 1 Before 1841, the creatures that we know as dinosaurs were known as dragons. The word dragon or dragons is found in the King James Bible 34 times. 3

4 Behemoth The Bible even talks about some dinosaurs by name. Job Chapter 40:15-24 talks about Behemoth, which seems to be a large long-necked dinosaur: Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together. His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron. He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him. Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play. He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens. The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about. Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth. He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares. Notice it says in verse 17 that he moves his tail like a cedar. Many modern study bibles say that this is probably an elephant or hippopotamus. This could not be true because neither the elephant nor the hippopotamus has a tail like a cedar tree. Just take a look at the pictures below. Do any of these tails look like a cedar tree? I don t think so. 4

5 2 3 Obviously, neither the elephant nor the hippopotamus has a tail like a cedar tree. However, a long-necked dinosaur does have a tail large enough to resemble a cedar tree. Behemoth was probably a large sauropod dinosaur like the Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, or Brachiosaurus. 4 5

6 Leviathan Job Chapter 41 talks about a fire-breathing dragon called Leviathan. By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. (Job 41:18-21) A fire-breathing dragon? There are four reasons why I believe there were fire-breathing dragons. 1. The Bible says there was an animal called Leviathan that could breathe out fire in Job Chapter There are hundreds of legends about fire-breathing dragons all over the world. 3. It is chemically possible for this to happen. There are animals today that have this type of capability. The Bombardier Beetle has the capability of spraying its enemies with chemicals that are 212 degrees Fahrenheit. That is the temperature of boiling water! 6

How is the beetle able to do this? The beetle has two compartments where he stores two different chemicals. When these two chemicals get together they explode!

Obviously, the beetle does not want these chemicals to explode inside his body, so he has a third chemical called an inhibiter that keeps this chemical reaction from taking place. When he is ready to fire, he has a 4 th chemical that he sprays in at the last possible second. This 4 th chemical 5 7

8 neutralizes the 3 rd chemical and allows the 1 st and 2 nd chemicals to react and explode. It is impossible for something like this to slowly evolve over millions of years. 4. Some dinosaurs had strange compartments in their heads. 6 8

9 Nobody knows for sure what the purpose of these compartments were. Some of the dinosaurs had these large humps on their heads that were enlargements of their sinus passages. These compartments are hollow and connected to the nasal passages. They are called the hollow-headed dinosaurs. Tyrannosaurus Rex was one of these dinosaurs. His head was more filled with these hollow compartments and sinus passages than with brains. If he had these special chemicals stored in these compartments, he could have been a fire-breathing dragon! Fiery Flying Serpents The Bible makes two mentions of an animal called a fiery flying serpent: Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent. (Isaiah 14:29) The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them. (Isaiah 30:6) 9

10 What could this fiery flying serpent be? The Pterodactyl is a flying reptile that supposedly lived millions of years ago. Obviously, I do not believe that this animal lived millions of years ago. It is interesting that the Bible mentions a flying serpent, and we know that the Pterodactyl is a flying serpent. 7 But why is it called a fiery flying serpent? Many people have claimed to see what appears to be modern day Pterodactyls in the area of Papua New Guinea. Some of the people that have seen these creatures claim that they glow 10

11 at night, much like a lightning bug does. This perfectly describes a fiery flying serpent. Did Dinosaurs Live With Man? Most scientists today believe that no human being has ever seen a living dinosaur. This is a faulty assumption based on their evolutionary thinking. In order to know for sure that no human being has ever seen a living dinosaur, they would have to interview every single person that has ever lived. Did they interview the first man Adam? Adam would have seen dinosaurs in the Garden of Eden. Did they interview Noah? Noah would have had dinosaurs on the ark during the flood. Dinosaurs and people have never been separated by millions of years of time. Everything was created in 6 days about 6,000 years ago: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it (Exodus 20:11). On the sixth day of the Creation, God created all of the land animals. He also created Adam on the sixth day. If God made all the land animals and Adam on the sixth day of history, then Adam must have seen dinosaurs! Again, 11

12 dinosaurs and people have never been separated by millions of years of time. They were created on the same day! Dinosaurs would have thrived in the pre-flood environment. The environment before the flood was very different than what we have today. Before the flood, people lived to be over 900 years old. It would make sense that animals would have been able to live much longer lives before the flood as well. Since reptiles grow all of their lives, it would make perfect sense that there would have been some pretty big lizards roaming the earth before the worldwide flood of Noah s day. Flood Legends There are over 270 flood stories from around the world that talk about a worldwide flood. 8 Duane Gish s book, Dinosaurs by Design, talks about a few of these legends. The first one he mentions is a flood legend from Hawaii. Notice how similar it is to the biblical account: Long after the death of Kuniuhonna, the first man, the world became a wicked terrible place to live. There was one good man left; his name was Nu-u. He made a great canoe with a house on it and filled it with animals. The waters came up over all the earth and killed all the people. Only Nu-u and his family were saved. Notice how the name Nu-u is very similar to Noah. 12

13 The Chinese have a story about a man named Fuhi, whom they consider to be the father of their civilization. The story says that Fuhi, his wife, three sons and three daughters escaped a great flood. He and his family were the only people that survived the flood. After the flood they repopulated the world. Again, we have another story very similar to the Biblical account. The Toltec Indians have a story that says the world was destroyed by a great flood that covered even the highest mountains. 9 Following the great flood, these men began to multiply and built a very high zacuali, or a great tower, to provide a safe place if the world were destroyed again. However, the languages became confused, so different language groups wandered to other parts of the world. 10 This story sounds very similar to the biblical account of the worldwide flood and the tower of Babel. Were There Dinosaurs on Noah s Ark? Genesis 6:19 says, And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. If God told Noah to bring two of every sort, then Noah must have had dinosaurs on the ark. However, he didn t have to bring the biggest ones that he could find. It is likely that the animals he brought onto the ark were young. This would make sense for multiple reasons. 13

14 He would bring young animals because they are much smaller. The biggest dinosaur egg ever found was about the size of a football. 11 Younger animals would have eaten much less. This lowered the required amount of food necessary for Noah to bring onto the ark. The reason that Noah was bringing animals onto the ark is so they would be able to repopulate the world after the flood. It would only make sense to bring younger animals because they would live longer and be able to produce more offspring after getting off of the ark. What Happened to the Dinosaurs After the Flood? After the flood the dinosaurs faced a very hostile environment. It was no longer the pre-flood world in which they thrived. The climate had now changed dramatically. Remember that before the flood people would live to be over 900 years old. Immediately after the flood this dropped to 400 years. Then 200 years. Then 100 years. Now the average life expectancy for people is between years. The environment is much more hostile now than it was in the pre-flood world. The dinosaurs had a very tough time adapting to this new environment. A second problem that the dinosaurs faced after the flood is that people hunted them. However, they didn t call them dinosaurs. They called them dragons. The word dinosaur 14

15 was not even a word until For most of human history the creatures that we know as dinosaurs were called dragons. As the population of people began to rise after the flood, the population of dragons would have gone down. This is simply because of the fact that nobody wants to live next door to a dragon. As people migrated after the flood the big ferocious animals would have been killed or driven off. Dragon Legends There are legends all over the world of people killing or slaying dragons. One Chinese legend tells of a famous Chinese man named Yu. After the great flood Yu surveyed the land of China and divided it into sections. He built channels to drain the water off to the sea and helped make the land livable again. Many snakes and dragons were driven from the marshlands when Yu created the new farmlands. 12 Alexander the Great reported that, when he conquered parts of what is now India in 326 B.C. his soldiers were scared by the great dragons that lived in caves. 13 Marco Polo, a Venetian explorer, reported in 1271 AD that the emperor of China raised dragons to pull his chariots in parades. 14 In 1611 the emperor appointed the post of Royal Dragon Feeder. 15 If they were raising dragons to 15

16 pull chariots in parades and had the post of royal dragon feeder, they must have actually had dragons! This was only a few hundred years ago. It was built in the late 1100 s A.D

17 Ica Stones The Ica Stones are a collection of stones that were found in Ica Province, Peru. The stones are estimated to be about 1400 years old. 18 Many were found in the 1960 s, but the stones have been mentioned as far back as the 1500 s. The first mention of the stones is from a Spanish priest journeying to the region of Ica in Father Simon, a Jesuit missionary, accompanied Pizarro along the Peruvian coast and recorded his amazement upon viewing the stones. In 1562, Spanish explorers sent some of the stones back to Spain. 19 Below are a few of the Ica Stones that have dinosaurs carved on them

19 How would someone be able to carve accurate depictions of dinosaurs on stones 1,400 years ago unless they had actually seen a living dinosaur? Many people will discredit these stones simply because of the fact that they have dinosaurs on them. They have never even seen the stones personally, but they discredit them because they do not fit their particular worldview. Living Dinosaurs If dinosaurs are mentioned in the Bible and all throughout history, is it possible that some dinosaurs could still be alive today? In order to say that something no longer exists you would have to be everywhere at the same time. This is 19

20 simply not possible and therefore it is impossible to know for sure that something is truly extinct. There is evidence that some dinosaurs could still be alive today. Mokele-Mbembe 21 20

22 Mokele-Mbembe is an animal that lives in the area of the Likouala Swamp in the Republic of the Congo. The natives describe the animal as looking exactly like a sauropod dinosaur.

They say it has a long neck with a snake like head and spends most of its time in the water. The name Mokele-Mbembe translates to one that stops the flow of rivers in the local language. The animal is said to be very territorial and attacks anything that strays into its territory. California s Plesiosaur In 1925 a creature that very closely resembles a plesiosaur washed up on Moore s Beach near Santa Cruz, California. Skeptics have argued that it is a type of Baird's Beaked Whale. However, this is ridiculous because the creature 21

Wallace, president of the Natural History Society of British Columbia, studied the creature and concluded that it was a type of plesiosaurus: My examination of the monster was quite thorough. It had no teeth. Its head is large and its neck fully 20 feet long. The body is weak and the tail is only three feet in length from the end of the backbone with a bill like it possesses, it must have lived on herbage and undoubtedly inhabited a swamp. I would call it a type of plesiosaurus. 23 Another witness, Judge W.R. Springer of Santa Cruz, felt the creature was from a prehistoric age. He added his observation: evidence of two short feet or flippers, and probably swam with its head high above water. 24 The animal was obviously a plesiosaur. Dinosaurs and the Gospel Message Nowadays, when most people think about dinosaurs, they immediately think of millions of years and evolution. Satan has used dinosaurs to lead many people away from the Bible. It is time that we start using dinosaurs to lead people to Jesus Christ! The existence of dinosaurs does not contradict with the Bible in any way, shape, or form. In fact, dinosaurs fit perfectly in with what the Bible says. The Bible says that 23

24 God created all the land animals, including dinosaurs and man, on Day 6. So yes, dinosaurs and man did live together in the past. However, they didn t call them dinosaurs. They called them dragons. Dragons are mentioned in the Bible 34 times. Most of the dinosaur fossils that we find are from the dinosaurs that were buried quickly during the flood of Noah s day. The next time you go to a museum and see a dinosaur skeleton, you can be reminded of the worldwide flood as recorded in the book of Genesis. During that flood, God poured out His wrath upon this earth. The Bible says that there is coming a day when God will once again pour out his wrath on the earth. However, God doesn t want you to have to experience His wrath. Before the flood, God told Noah to build an ark. This ark was open and available to all who would be willing to go through its door and be saved. This opportunity to be saved was available until God shut the door, and began pouring out His wrath on this earth. God is doing the same thing today. He is offering Jesus Christ as the ark of salvation. Anyone who is willing to accept Jesus Christ as their savior will be saved. Jesus said, I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be 24

25 saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (John 10:9) The offer is there now, but there will come a day when God will shut the door again. When God raptures His church, He will then again pour out His wrath on the earth and all of its sinful inhabitants. Dinosaur fossils remind us of the flood and the ark of salvation that saved Noah and his family. The ark of salvation that we have today is Jesus Christ. The Good News If you were to die today, are you 100 percent sure that you would go to Heaven? I am going to show you how you can be 100 percent sure that you will go to Heaven when you die. The first thing that we have to understand is that we are all sinners. The Bible says: Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 25

26 We have all sinned and come short. We do not measure up to what God expects. We have all sinned and there is a punishment for sin. The Bible says: Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death God s punishment for our sin is death. However, when we die it is not over. After we die, the Bible talks about a second death. Revelation 20:14-15 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Notice it says that all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone. All liars. Have you ever told a lie? We all have and according to the last verse we all deserve to burn in the lake of fire for eternity. 26

27 But, the good news is that God loves us. He does not want us to go to Hell. We do deserve to be punished, but because God loves us He does not want us to have to pay that punishment. Here is what God did for us: Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. God Himself became a human being. His name is Jesus. He was born of a virgin. He lived a perfect and sinless life. He was beaten, spit upon, and nailed to a cross. When he was nailed to the cross He bore our sins on himself. He died on the cross and paid the punishment for our sins so that we do not have to. Three days later He was raised from the dead. Jesus died for everyone. But this does not mean that everyone is going to Heaven. There is something that we must do to be saved. The Bible tells us what we have to do to be saved in the Book of Acts: Acts 16:30-31 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 27

28 In order to be saved you must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. It does not say that you have to go to church. It does not say that you have to be baptized. It does not say that you have to turn from sin and live a good life. While all of these are good things, none of them will save you. The only thing that you have to do to be saved is believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Here is the most famous verse in the Bible: John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Notice it does not say whosoever is good enough or whosoever lives a good life or whosoever joins a church. It says whosoever believeth in him. It has nothing to do with works: Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. 28

29 It is all about believing: John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. It s all about believing on Jesus. Not simply believing in an historical figure called Jesus, but believing that Jesus Christ died for your sins and was raised from the dead three days later. You will not go to Heaven for what you have done; you will go to Heaven by believing on what Jesus has done for you. Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Salvation is a free gift: Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 29

30 A gift is not something that you have to earn. A gift is free. The person that is giving the gift is the one that has paid for it. God is giving us eternal life and He paid for this gift when He died on the cross for our sins. When God gives you the gift of eternal life it is yours forever. You cannot lose your salvation. If you could lose your salvation it would not truly be an eternal gift. God is telling us that if we believe on Jesus and ask Him to save us, we will get everlasting life. If He were to give us everlasting life and then years later He were to take it away from us, then He wasn t telling the truth when he said it was everlasting life. That would make God a liar. The good news is that God cannot lie: Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; When God says eternal and everlasting, He means it! Therefore, after you are saved you are saved forever. You did not do anything to earn your salvation and you cannot do anything to lose it. Remember, salvation has nothing to do with works. It is all about believing on what Jesus has done for you. 30

31 Do you believe that you have sinned and deserve to go to Hell? Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins? Do you believe that Jesus rose again from the dead? Do you believe that Jesus would save you if you asked Him to right now? Do you believe that once you are saved you will be saved forever? If you answered yes to all of the questions above, you are ready to call upon Jesus to save you. Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. I would like to help you call upon the Lord right now so that you will know that you are going to Heaven. Simply pray this prayer: 31

32 Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I know I deserve to go to Hell. But I believe that you died on the cross for my sins and rose again. Please save me right now and take me to Heaven when I die. I am only trusting in you Jesus. Amen. 32
