3 The Importance of Creation Psalm 11:3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? While we Christians bemoan the increasing ungodliness of our country, and may try to fight issues such as abortion, homosexuality and gay marriage, Satan s forces are attacking the foundation of God s Word. The growing immorality of our day should not surprise us. It is the corrupt fruit that naturally issues from the rotten root of evolutionary thought. We as God s children must stand ready as good soldiers to earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints (Jude 1:3). To do so, we must put on the whole armor of God as instructed by the Apostle Paul. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: (Ephesians 6:10-17) 1. Creation is FOUNDATIONAL to Biblical Inerrancy and Christian Theology Christ s words recorded in Matthew 7:24 27 illustrate the importance of a strong foundation: Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of Mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not; for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of Mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (Matt 7:24-27) If we compromise on the accuracy of the Genesis 1 11, then the rest of our faith is built on sand. Nearly every major Christian doctrine is rooted in the first 11 chapters of Genesis. So if Genesis cannot be trusted, then none of the Bible can be trusted. Page 3 of 11

4 2. The willing ignorance of the modern world was foretold in Scripture In 2 Peter 3:3 7, the apostle Peter predicted the willing ignorance of the scoffers in our days. He also accurately described the beliefs of uniformitarianism upon which evolutionary science is built. Peter said they would deliberately ignore the geological evidence of the global flood by which God judged the world. This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of His coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation (Uniformitarianism). For this they willingly are ignorant of (they deliberately ignore), that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:1-9) The apostle Paul said that the evidence for creation is clearly seen, so the unrighteous who suppress the truth are without excuse. They may call themselves wise, but God declares them to be fools. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold (suppress) the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them (God has made it evident or plain to them). For the invisible things of Him (His invisible attributes) from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead (divine nature); so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations (their thoughts turned to worthless things and became futile), and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. (Rom 1:18-25) At the end of his first epistle to Timothy, Paul warned his disciple to be on guard against the oppositions of what is falsely called knowledge. Page 4 of 11

5 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called (opposing arguments of what is falsely called knowledge ): Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. (1 Timothy 6:20-21a) 3. God created in 6 literal days: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: (Exodus 20:11) The Hebrew word, YOM, can have various meanings as can the English word day. However: YOM always means a literal day when used with a number YOM always means a literal day when used with, evening, morning, or night. Gen 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. Gen 1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. Gen 1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day. Gen 1:19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. Gen 1:23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. Gen 1:31 And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. There is no clearer way to convey 6 literal days than the way it is written There are other words God could have used to clearly convey long periods of time Hebrew scholars believe that the author intended to convey, 6 literal days Why is this so important? a. Gen 1:31 And God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. If millions of years of evolution and death had occurred, burying billions of dead things (resulting in millions of fossils) had already occurred, then everything He had made was not very good. b. The Bible clearly teaches that death and the curse originated because of Adam s sin. If death occurred before Adam and Eve sinned, then death and the curse are not the result of Adam s sin, and New Testament theology is a lie. c. Mark 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. Jesus believed in a literal 6-day creation and taught on that basis. If God did not supernaturally create in six literal days, then Jesus was deceived or a liar (either way, He would not be God). d. The authority and truthfulness of scripture are on the line. If God did not do what this passage clearly says He did, then what can you believe? Page 5 of 11

6 4. Science vs. Faith Science A systematic study discovering general truths and operating principles (e.g.: the laws of nature). Scientific Method The pursuit of knowledge by observation and experimentation defining a problem, developing a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis, and repeating the results. Evolution is NOT Science Creation and Evolution both fall outside of the realm of science because they are both worldviews of how life and the universe came into existence in the past. No amount of experimentation and observation can prove what happened in the past. Nor can the origin of life or the universe be experimentally repeated. The worldview you choose to believe is based on faith, not proof. Therefore, evolution is just as much a religious faith as belief in creation. Now faith is the substance (or assurance) of things hoped for, the evidence (conviction or certainty) of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report (gained approval). Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed (or prepared) by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear (are visible). Hebrews 11:1-3 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear. 7 5. Creation and Evolution are Two Different World Views The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, 2000 World view noun: 1. The overall perspective from which one sees and interprets the world. 2. A collection of beliefs about life and the universe held by an individual or a group. Assumptions of Creation: 1. The Bible is the word of God and is accurate and trustworthy in all it says. 2. God created the heavens and earth, the sea and all that is in them (including all life) out of nothing in 6 literal days by supernatural means. He has maintained them since then according to the laws of nature, which He ordained. 3. The material creation (heavens and earth, etc.) are about 6,000 years old 4. God can supernaturally intervene when He chooses. 5. Death and the curse were the result of Adam s sin. The world was perfect, and there was no death before sin. 6. God created kinds of plants and animals and everything reproduces within its kind. 7. God created these kinds with a great deal of genetic variety and all species have come from the original kinds by the loss of genetic information. 8. Natural (and artificial) selection from existing genetic information enables life to adapt to changing habitats and is the mechanism by which species were formed from the original kinds. 9. God destroyed the world with a catastrophic, global flood, through which Noah, his family, and the animals were saved in the ark. 10. Man and dinosaurs lived at the same time. There were dinosaurs on the ark. 11. The order of fossils layers in the geological column represent the sequential burial of creatures during the 1-year global flood in the days of Noah. Assumptions of Evolution: 1. The Bible is just a religious book written by men and is not trustworthy. 2. There is no God. 3. Naturalism Everything that exists came about by natural means. 4. Time and chance are what make everything possible. Given enough time, the impossible becomes possible, the possible probable, and the probable virtually certain. One has only to wait; time itself performs the miracles (George Wald Scientific American / 1954). 5. The earth and the universe are billions of years old. 6. Life has evolved over millions of years by chance mutations and natural selection, which resulted in a gain of genetic information. 7. Death and struggle, the survival of the fittest, were the engine that drove evolution since the beginning of life, long before humans existed. 8. Higher orders of life evolved from lower orders of life. Single cell organisms became more complex (e.g.: worms), then fish, then reptiles. Dinosaurs and mammals came from reptiles. Birds came from dinosaurs. Humans and monkeys (apes, chimps, etc.) evolved from a common mammalian ancestor. 9. There have been local floods, but never a global flood. The rock layers we see were formed gradually over millions and billions of years. 10. Dinosaurs became extinct over 60 million years before humans evolved. 11. The order of fossils layers in the geological column represent the appearance and extinction of organisms over millions of years of time. Page 7 of 11

8 Since the creation and evolution worldviews have different assumptions, we can scientifically evaluate the evidence to see which worldview better explains the facts. 9 6. Biblical Creationism The study of what the Bible says about creation: 1. The Bible is not a science text book, but what it says is scientifically accurate and true. 2. The Bible is not a history book, but it is historically accurate. The Bible was written by the author of Creation who was there to witness all history. 3. Genesis 1:1 2:3 provides a quick overview of the 6-days of creation and God s day of rest. 4. Genesis 2 provides more detail about the creation of man in God s image and the institution of marriage 5. Genesis 3 records Adam s sin, the curse, institution of animal sacrifice, and God s first promise of a future savior 6. Genesis 4 tells of Cain and Abel, the first murder, and Cain s ungodly offspring. 7. Genesis 5 records the godly line leading to Noah, beginning with Seth 8. Genesis 6 8 records the increasing sinfulness of mankind, God s judgment of the world by a global flood, and the preservation of Noah s family and animal life on the ark. 9. Genesis 9 tells of Noah s life after the flood, permission to eat meat, a repetition of the dominion mandate, the institution of human government, God s covenant never to destroy the world with a flood again. 10. Genesis 10 indicates the multiplication and division of Noah s family into the nations of the world 11. Genesis 11 records the tower of Babel and the creation of different languages 12. Exo 20:11a For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day. 13. Job 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. 14. Job 40:15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. Job 40:16 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. Job 40:17 He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together. Col 1:16 17 For by him (Jesus Christ) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist. 11 7. Scientific Creationism Evidences for a Young Earth include: 1. Carbon 14 has been detected in coal, diamonds, and dinosaur fossils indicating they are less than 200,000 years old 2. Rate of Helium diffusion out of radioactive Zircon crystals indicate they are only about 6,000 years old. 3. Helium is formed by radioactive (alpha) decay of many elements, but the amount of Helium in the atmosphere is small (too small for billions of years of decay) 4. Decay of the earth s magnetic field the earth s magnetic field has been decaying exponentially with a probable half-life of about 1,400 years. At that rate, 20,000 years ago it would have had a magnetic field as strong as a magnetic star! So life would not have been possible. 5. Lunar Recession The moon is currently moving away from the earth at a rate of about 4 cm (1½ in) / year 6. Influx of materials into the ocean Through erosion and river inflow, chemicals are constantly being transported into the ocean.
