Elul is a time of deep self-reflection, a time of listening for God. During Elul, we lay the groundwork for the transformations we hope to experience during the Days of Awe. In communities that hold daily services, the shofar is blown throughout the month. The blasts of the shofar begin to pierce through the fog in which we often find ourselves as we go about our routines. During Elul, the shofar calls us to begin the work of teshuvah, of turning from harmful behaviors, insensitive habits, caustic attitudes. The spiritual preparation of Elul culminates with the saying of seliḥot prayers for forgiveness that are added to the cycle of daily prayers. Seliḥot literally means forgiveness and refers to the prayers themselves, but it can also refer to a particular service that takes place on a Saturday night leading up to Rosh Hashanah, usually the Saturday immediately prior Rosh Hashanah. The Seliḥot service includes many of the greatest hits from High Holidays first and foremost, chanting the 13 Attributes; but also Avinu Malkeynu; the confessional prayers, Ashamnu and Al Ḥet; and a variety of other options such as Shema Koleynu and HaNeshamah Lakh. The service ends with the blowing of the shofar. The central prayer of the service is the 13 Attributes: adonai adonai el raḥum v ḥanun, erekh apayim, v rav ḥesed v emet notzer ḥesed la alafim, nosei avon va fesha v ḥata ah v naqeh The 13 Attributes prayer has been beautifully rendered into English, in a way that it can be sung to the same melody as the Hebrew, by Rabbi Burt Jacobson: Shechina, Shechina, Compassion and Tenderness Patience, Forbearance, Kindness, Awareness Bearing love from age to age, Lifting guilt and mistakes, and making us free. The 13 Attributes is a powerful mantra to hold in the days leading into Rosh Hashanah. It is reassuring to imagine ourselves worthy of patience despite our persistent flaws; to imagine ourselves deserving of kindness, tenderness, compassion; to imagine that we can be free. Small wonder that this prayer is a central focus of Seliḥot! In some ways, the Seliḥot service serves as a refresher course reminding everyone in advance some key melodies for the holidays so that it will be easier to join in once Rosh Hashanah arrives. But, of course, the function of the service is much more profound than just that. It is a refresher course in teshuvah, in the concepts of repentance, forgiveness, and transformation concepts that can all too easily get lost from our consciousness over the course of the year. Toward that end, some congregations incorporate guided meditation, ritual, or other activities into the Seliḥot service in order to assist individuals in attendance to deeply and personally begin to engage in the process teshuvah. Temple B nai Abraham will be holding a Seliḥot service this year on Saturday, September 16th at 7:30pm, and I encourage you to attend! We will, of course, touch on some of the greatest hits of High Holidays as we communally orient ourselves toward the High Holidays, and we will also engage in a ritual that will facilitate your own personal spiritual shift into the Days of Awe all with the kavanah of embracing and deeply internalizing the message of the 13 Attributes. Shalom, Rabbi Pfau

2 Page 2 Temple B nai Abraham President s Message Nobody is ever impoverished through the giving of charity. Welcome back for an exciting year at Temple B'nai Abraham. I'm honored to serve our thriving community during our 100th year anniversary. Our Anniversary Committee has been hard at work planning the October 29, 2017 fundraiser and celebration. All are welcome, so please encourage past, present and potential members, leaders and friends of Temple B'nai Abraham to attend! I'm also overjoyed to celebrate Rabbi Julie Pfau in her 10th year as Rabbi at Temple B'nai Abraham. Rabbi Julie has lead the way in fostering the culture of our synagogue and helping us build the community that we enjoy today. Make sure to congratulate her on this awesome achievement. So in addition to celebrating two milestones in our history, I am excited that Moreh Jill Ratzan will be leading our Hebrew curriculum again this year. Jill had a successful revamp of our program last year and continues to make huge improvements. If you have a child in Sunday school or Hebrew school this year, I know you are in for a treat! We are working on many renovations around the synagogue, including the apartment, air conditioners and the front steps. As always, these things are expensive, so please keep us in mind when making your donations for the year. Lastly, I'd like to thank our volunteers. From the board to the school, onegs, community outreach, supermarket cards, delivering meals and more, our volunteers really help our community thrive. I encourage everyone to pitch in and help out, it is what makes Temple B'nai Abraham Great! Example isn t another way to teach, it is the only way to teach. -Albert Einstein Our theme this year is Jewish Social Justice (see accompanying article for details). Tuition remains the same as last year. Full information about tuition can be found in your membership packet. Please join us for a wonderful year of learning! Hebrew School & Tot Shabbat According to a Kabbalistic legend, God created the world in part by putting Divine energy into a collection of jars... which, unable to hold infinite power in finite space, proceeded to shatter into countless tiny shards. People who find and "raise up" these shards of light through acts of tikkun olam (repairing the world) can be thought of as working toward rebuilding these broken jars, gradually improving the world and completing God's incomplete creation. Our school theme this year is Jewish Social Justice. For our Sunday school students, this will mean reading stories about kindness, friendship, and mitzvot in addition to our regular curriculum of holiday activities and aleph-bet reading readiness. Our Hebrew school students will explore traditional and modern Jewish social justice topics including notein lechem la'rih'eivim (feeding the hungry), bal tashchit (caring for the earth), kibud av v'em (honoring the elderly), and rodef shalom (pursuing peace) through text study, hands-on activities, and field trips. Students will also continue to study Hebrew decoding and meanings of prayers, celebrate holidays, and participate in weekly student-led Shabbat services. B'shalom, Jill Ratzan Education Director

9 Page 9 New Year s Card This fall Sarah Seidel Sisterhood will be hosting a fundraiser. We have a beautiful New Year s card designed by Elaine Trackman and Judy Schimmel that we want to offer to temple and sisterhood members. The card, attached, is a lovely depiction of our stained glass windows. Packages of 10 cards can be purchased for $15. If you are interested, please contact Judy Schimmel at timeout4two@gmail.com to place your order. The deadline for orders is September 19 th. This will give us time to produce the cards and get them to you for the holiday. Then, send a check payable to Sarah Seidel Sisterhood to treasurer, Marcy Schwartz, at 110 Prince Street. On the memo line write New Years card so Marcy will know why she has received your check. There will be two versions of the card produced. One will be the New Years card and will say L Shanna Tovah, another will simply say Shalom and can be used as a general greeting card. The art is beautiful and I m sure you will enjoy using these cards. Both kinds of cards will be available in packs of 10 for $15. We hope you will enjoy these cards and support this fundraiser. Interfaith Community Donations Dear Friends, Last month, one of the folks dropping off groceries asked about where they go from the bins. I realized I haven't done a "State of the Union" message in a while, so here goes. The groceries are gathered from the bins and at the church, and we count up what we have for the month. We need 105 cans, and 35 of everything else to make up the 35 bags. After we inventory what we have, we shop to make up the difference. Over the years, we have had many people and organizations donate monies so that we can do the shopping. We can always use donations - subject of another . And while we cook our monthly meal at First Baptist, some of us assemble the grocery bags. We add hygiene products when available. This group began the grocery bag ministry in March of 2006, by my calculations, that is 4,830 grocery bags!! And with each bag containing about $15 to $20 worth of groceries, our donations together add up to about $90,000. And in the worst economy since the Great Depression, we have not missed a delivery! This group has done together more than we could even think of doing separately!! And, more importantly, together we make a difference in the lives of the folks we serve. All the best, Anne Healing List Healing ListThe Healing List is a part of all of our services. Names are read aloud for Healing and Well Being. Please send any names for the list to Eileen Gale at egale10@verizon.net. If you want to add a name during services, they can be still be said aloud when these are read.
