4 FROM OUR RABBI Dear Friends: One of the things I cherish is our synagogue s strong commitment to ongoing professional development for our staff team. I feel particularly blessed that, in this upcoming seventh year of my tenure, the congregation has generously granted me a sabbatical. Over the last few months, I ve been reflecting deeply with Temple President Joel Wagman and Vice President Karen Chapro about how I might best use that time to strengthen my service to our congregation, as I seek to shape it into an even more relational community where we know and support one another. As a result, I have been focusing on my role as a counselor. During my time in Rabbinical School, I was lucky enough to complete 600 hours of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), 50% more than Hebrew Union College expected of me. Under the auspices of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, this program is the gold standard for training clergy of all faiths in introductory pastoral care (focusing on the sacred listening and informal counseling that occurs during a hospital visit). The experience was transformative. Now, 13 years after finishing graduate school, I am ready to once again return to the classroom to expand my learning. My desire to train further as a counselor has also been fueled by the encounters I ve had with the scholarship of distinguished Torah commentator Avivah Zornberg. Throughout her writing, Zornberg articulates an analogy between Torah study and psychotherapy: that the ongoing encounters we have with our (individual and communal) stories can yield considerable opportunity for healing and growth when we open ourselves up to those stories and the impact they have on us and our lives. I have been deeply moved by this approach, and I hope my ongoing learning will enable me to identify new ways to build bridges, by bringing the methodologies of the counseling space in to Torah study and vice versa. Thankfully, Hebrew Union College s New York campus offers rabbis (and clergy of other faiths) a chance to do this sacred learning. In close collaboration with our lay leadership, I have decided to use a planned sabbatical to pursue the degree of Doctor of Ministry in HUC s Interfaith Clinical Education for Pastoral Ministry Program. This new undertaking in professional development will take me out of our building on Mondays during the next two school years. (In the third year of the program, I ll have the opportunity to put what I have learned in to practice here in partnership with all of you.) Although my absence on Mondays will be a small adjustment (along with Cantor Becker, I will of course remain available for extraordinary family emergencies), our lay leadership and I believe that this arrangement will enable me to remain regularly engaged with the entire congregation (as opposed to a typical clergy sabbatical, when colleagues step away from the congregation for an extended period of time). I am humbled and grateful that our lay leadership has so enthusiastically invested in my and our communal, future. I look forward to sharing more about my journey in the coming months. In the meantime, don t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Most importantly: please remember that Cantor Becker and I are always here to listen, and to support, you and your families on the journeys of your lives. With regards, Rabbi Jeffrey Brown 4
