1 D E C E M B E R JUMC HAPPENINGS In Matthew 7:7, Jesus said, Seek and you will find, and in verse 8, he who seeks finds. In Matthew 2:1-2 we find these words, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, magi (wise men) from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, Where is the One who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him. These wise men from the east came seeking a king, who we identify as Jesus, God Himself, born as a baby in Bethlehem. Can we truly imagine all that these persons had to do in preparation and travel to find this child? As you consider this event and their efforts, also ask yourself, What efforts am I doing daily in my life to seek God and to know Him better? 3 Pastor s Page REV. SUSAN MOORE As I write this, thoughts of gratitude flood my heart. Thank you, Church, for your prayers for my dad and me. I appreciate the kindness you have extended to us both. Growing old can sometimes be very difficult with health issues, and for my dad, major relocation challenges. Thank you for understanding. At the Northern Lebanon Mission ConneXion Charge Conference and worship service, our District Superintendent, Rev. B.K. Chung, challenged us to participate in a 21-day complaint free time. He gave us rubber wristbands to wear. And if we caught ourselves complaining we are to switch the band to the other wrist. The intention is that we are more aware of our complaining. I have had to switch it more than once. This has reminded me that what comes out of my mouth is to be edifying, not complaining. So when I catch myself with a complaint on my lips, or even in my thoughts, not only do I make the switch, but recall a blessing. By the time you read this, we will have celebrated Thanksgiving. My prayer is that you not only had full bellies, but that you are overflowing with a sense of God s goodness and blessings. Our Sunday worship series on the Attributes of God may challenge you and your understanding of God. For some of us, God is simply too small. Jesus is our friend, which is great, but incomplete. Therefore, we are spending time studying the nature and character of God from all those ways that God is God, and those ways in which we are to emulate a glimmer of who God is. We worship and serve a majestic, all-sufficient God, Who is present in all our circumstances, Who is all-knowing, and Who is all-powerful. No matter what happens in this life, God is able to see us through. Advent is the season we prepare for Christmas, as Lent is the season we prepare for Easter. We need to prepare ourselves spiritually to appreciate the real joy of the season. I encourage you to meditate a half hour on one of the passages of Scriptures in the Sunday bulletin during the week. As we approach Christmas may we have a sense of awe, excitement, anticipation, and expectation of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday. We will worship in one combined special service at 10:00 am and then for Christmas Eve Candlelight Services at 6:00pm and 8:00pm. Love in Christ, Pastor Susan

4 EVAN (ON YOU TUBE) Where do students turn when they want to know the truth? And all God s people said, Scripture! Students open the Bible and turn to appropriate, memorized passages which deal with whatever questions and concerns they have. They heard the stories all their lives. They see themselves in Scripture and know that it is a guidebook for life. These are the characters that teach us how to live and how to face adversity. For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 Actually, YouTube and Google are major sources students turn to for truth. It is the age in which we live. Nobody, generally speaking, uses the traditional means of reference for physical or spiritual instruction. These resources are wonderful and useful but provide only small amounts of truth. Opinion weighs heavy and God s Word is sparse. The students suggested we watch a viral (popular) video called Evan. The video was produced by Sandy Hook Promise, a group founded by parents who lost children in the Sandy Hook shooting A quick Google search led to a Wikipedia article which reads: The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, when 20-year-old, Adam Lanza, fatally shot 20 children between six and seven years old, as well as six adult staff members. Prior to driving to the school, he shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home. As first responders arrived at the scene, Lanza committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. The Evan video shows a boy writing a message on a library table. I am bored It is very near summer break. Later Evan discovers someone has responded back to him. Evan continues the dialog and is intrigued by who might be responding. I got the sense that Evan was imagining the possibility of a romantic encounter developing through the fun interaction. He invited the mystery correspondent to hang out and do nothing with him over summer break. As the video concludes, Evan meets the young lady and they laugh and chat while in the background a lone gunman enters the school and prepares to shoot. The screen fades to black. The film then rewinds and highlights what was visible in the background throughout the film. A student was portrayed as bullied and developing a plan to take revenge on the school and students who failed him. That is the hidden message of the film. What goes on around us when we are paying attention only to our personal interests? Who is it in our lives who is lost and lonely in our backgrounds? Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve the troubles of my heart and free me from my anguish. Look on my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins. See how numerous are my enemies and how fiercely they hate me! Psalm 25:16-19 I can t stop the movement of our culture. I can participate and point to the good things that God uses through YouTube and Google. Finding God s Word online is easy. Encouraging videos that teach the Word are abundant. We need to be vigilant but not fearful as we enter a time when digital content is so readily available. Some of it is powerful for communicating the Gospel and Kingdom understanding. Some offers confusion and leads people astray. We can trust that Jesus will track down his lost sheep even in the digital wilderness. and On FaCeBOOK and InSTaGRam
