1 JUNE - SEPTEMBER 2017 WainNaz Newsreel REACHING OUT TO, CARING FOR, AND BUILDING UP PEOPLE A note from Pastor Ryan One of the enduring pastimes of summer is camping. We enjoy getting away, reconnecting with nature, getting back to the basics. These days it s simple, we hook up the trailer with 3 slide outs, pack up everything we own (just in case we need it on the weekend), throw in the portable satellite dish, drive to the full-service site and voila! Glamping! I mean camping! Even if we sometimes go overboard with camping, the idea of getting out in nature and spending time in the outdoors seems to come from a desire that we have to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There seems to be something healing and redemptive in the act of clearing our schedules, decluttering our lives and getting back to the basics. In this act, sometimes we are reminded of how little we really need in order to get by and of what is really important in Church Events June 8 - Elementary Drop In starts June 11 - Grad Sunday June 20 - High School Drop-in starts July VBS Aug 17 & 18 - Basketball training Camp MISSION PROJECT- Bicycles for Pastors On our Mission fields there are many pastors who walk miles to perform their ministry. They desperately need bicycles and the cost of one bicycle is $ We are encouraging you to join our Mission Sub Committee and register your own project on the Bulletin Board to complete on your own time before Sept. 30 th, Ideas might be a bottle drive, a walk-a-thon, a bake sale, sale of seedlings from your crowded perennials, sale of small recipe books made up from internet, summer jello ideas, used book sales, travelling goodie basket...possibilities are endless! Set up a temporary table for your Mission work after the New & Used sale is over. Note: there can be many ideas that cost you nothing or very little. Invite participation from other Christian friends many like to be involved. A past walk-a-thon earned over $800!! For those of you who may not have the time or opportunity to serve regularly, this bicycle ministry could be a fun challenge for you. Join up with family or friends and have some summer enjoyment in our challenge to provide bicycles for pastors. Thank you! Pastor s note continued... life, the essentials.

We are reminded that sometimes we just need to remember the essentials and reestablish the priorities of life. Getting back to the basics can be very therapeutic indeed.

Our faith, like life, tends to get complicated by details and agendas that may distract from what is most important.

But we do get caught up in issues that may distract us from what is all important. Who wrote what book? How old is the earth?

Do social justice issues or political/societal influence make the most important impact for the church?

This act of thinking about the essentials helps us as we realize that sometimes we ve over complicated life with too many things, worried about too many unnecessary details. We are reminded that sometimes we just need to remember the essentials and reestablish the priorities of life. Getting back to the basics can be very therapeutic indeed. This summer on Sundays we are going to be spending time thinking about the essentials of faith. Our faith, like life, tends to get complicated by details and agendas that may distract from what is most important. In the church we can tend to get caught up in debates about how many angels can dance upon the head of a pin (just a saying!). But we do get caught up in issues that may distract us from what is all important. Who wrote what book? How old is the earth? What are the signs that the Lord is returning, which version of the bible is best? What denomination has it right? Are liberal or conservative theological approaches the best way? Do social justice issues or political/societal influence make the most important impact for the church? All of these, and many more, may be interesting arguments and debates, fascinating topics of conversation in a classroom or at a coffee shop. However, these details and other prominent conversations might just be a distraction from what is most important in our faith. We may find that the endless debates throughout Christendom have served to add clutter to our understanding of our faith and may have caused us to lose focus. Not that debates don t have their place, but too much clutter can tend to make us forget what is at the base. Too much fuzzy focus can tend to help us lose our way, forgetting the road we are on and the directions we have been given in order to move along on the journey. This summer we will think about essentials like: What do we believe about God, the Trinity, the importance of the church, the place of scripture, the reality of sin and some other topics like the place of sacraments like baptism and communion in the life of a Christian. It is my hope that getting back to the basics might just remind us that we have more in common with our Christian brothers and sisters from other denominations than what sets us apart. By focusing on the essentials we may perhaps find new clarity, a renewed vision of what is most important to our understanding of our faith. Perhaps, as we go through the summer, we will find that the essentials of faith and life are not mutually exclusive. 150 Days of Prayer PRAYER CALENDAR FOR CANADA S 150th BIRTHDAY Believers all across Canada are celebrating Canada s Birthday with prayer over a period of 150 days. God has encouraged us to call upon Him and promised to pour out His blessings upon us, as a consequence. Drop-In and Summer Camps Summer Camps VBS: Camp out getting s more of jesus This year the kids will be camping out together from July 16 th to 20 th and kindle their friendships with each other and

4 Drop-In and Summer Camps Summer Camps VBS: Camp out getting s more of jesus This year the kids will be camping out together from July 16 th to 20 th and kindle their friendships with each other and Jesus. Be paying attention for ways to help out as we all know that camping trips do not include time for sleep and are in need of park rangers to guide the way. Summer Camp Drop-In Elementary and Jr./Sr. High Jr./Sr. High will run on Tuesday s and will be mostly basketball with some soccer and kickball. It will run June 20 th to August 29 th each Tuesday from 4-5 pm. Thursday s from 3:45-4:45 pm will be Elementary drop-in. The dates for elementary drop-ins are June 8, 15, and 22; July 6, 13, 27; and August 17 and 24. Snack will be provided for both drop-ins. Will run from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm August 1 st -3 rd. This is for younger kids that are going into grade 1 to going into grade 6. Each day there will be a sport featured throughout a mixture of activities, snacks, and devotional time. Registration can be done online at wainnaz.com or filled out on a paper form at the church. Last day for registration is July 23 rd. If you are interested in helping out, that would be fantastic. Basketball Camp This camp is focused on athletes who want to grow in the sport of basketball. This camp runs from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm August 17 th and 18 th. This camp is for kids who will be entering grade 7 to grade 12 students. We will be learning many important skills, which will help make the athlete a better player for his position. There is a $15 cost for this camp and athletes must bring their own gear. As well sign up is online at wainnaz.com or at the church for a paper form. Last day of registration is July 29th. This will be worthwhile.

N. M. I.-Sept 24th Missionary visit Proverbs 22:17 Gary and Penney Sidle are global missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene assigned to Zambia, Africa.

He received a Masters of Divinity in missiology from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1993. Penney graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene College in 1986 with a B.A. in Christian education.

Gary has served on the West Virginia North Home Missions Board and the NYI Council. Penney has served as a children s pastor and Christian education director.

Penney received her call to missions at the age of 16. She has spent most of her life preparing to fulfill this call to teach and train others to win the lost.

He also works with the Work & Witness and JESUS film teams. Gary authored a mission book on Zambia titled The Smoke That Thunders.

She received an M.A. in religious education from Nazarene Theological Seminary in Prior to their appointment, the Sidles have pastored churches in West Virginia. Gary received his call to missions in a revival service in God has called him to build His kingdom through the training and equipping of His servants in a cross-cultural context. They have three children: Lindsay, Alyssa, and Josiah Women s Ministry is hosting Prayer Partners Celebrate Each fall we have meet and greet as a chance to meet our new partners or to reconnect after the summer The purpose is two- fold; First, & primarily we want to lift up the children & their families in prayer. Many of our children/youth do not have a network of family here in the community where they live. Some of our children/youth do not have committed Christians in their immediate family who pray for them on a consistent basis. What a privilege we have as a church family to offer our attention in prayer to those in our WainNaz children/youth family. Secondly, we want to provide an opportunity for WainNaz family connection. In this second purpose we encourage you to connect with your assigned family. Send them a note (mailboxes are in the Sunday School room). 7 Squeeze Play: A FAmily TooThpAsTe lesson Jim Weidmann Sue s Corner by Prepare for a rainy summer day adventure starting with this fun lesson: When Your Tongue Does The Talking. Main Point: We can t take back the damage of our words. Supplies: You ll need a small tube of toothpaste for each child, paper plates, plastic spoons, a $10.00 bill and a Bible. Give each child a small tube of toothpaste, a spoon and a paper plate. Instruct them to empty their tubes of toothpaste onto the plates. Let kids have fun making swirls, towers and other designs with the toothpaste. If you like, have a race to see who can empty their tube first. Then place the $10 bill in the center of the table and explain: You have three minutes. The first person to put all his or her toothpaste back into the tube wins the $10. Go! (Parents, your money is safe. There s no way to get all the toothpaste back into the tube.) Discuss: Which was harder, squeezing the toothpaste out or putting it back in? Why? How is this like words coming out of your mouth? When have you wished you could take back words you d already said? What happened when you couldn t? Share: When we use our words to hurt others, we can apologize, but we can never take back what we said. It s hard to forget when someone has said a mean thing. Read: James 3:3-12, Proverbs 15:28, Luke 6:45 and Ephesians 4:29. Memorize: This slogan Do it God s way, watch what you say -- will help kids remember. Prayer: Allow time for each family member to share prayer concerns and answers to prayer. Then close your time together in prayer for each concern. Thank God for listening to and caring about us. Sandy Johnson..Harvest Time A good time to contemplate the work to be done in God s harvest A London preacher once said, When you are tempted to judge sin leniently, excusing it, and saying it does not really matter, remember that sin is like an iceberg.the greater part is out of sight. Only about one ninth of an iceberg is seen above the water. The rest is out of sight, hidden from view. He that covers his sin shall not prosper.god sees hidden sins. If you have a hidden sin in your life, confess it and forsake it now! Some time ago an old man gave his heart to Christ and became a truly converted Christian. He had a great many friends who were sinful, lost men. He wanted them to become Christians too. He made a list of the names of his old associates. There were one hundred sixteen names on the list. Some of them were infidels, some were drunkards; some were among the worst men in the town where he lived. He began to pray earnestly for these people. Then he talked to them about Christ. He gave them tracts and good books to read. Some refused to listen to him. Others made fun of him. But he kept on praying and working for their salvation. Within two years a hundred of those whose names were on his list were saved. The secret to his success was that he prayed and then yielded himself an instrument to God through which God could answer his prayers. That s putting faith into action. Faith without works is dead! A true example of a committed worker in God s Kingdom.
