Out and Proud! Rabbi Shulamit Ambalu The trouble with Anglo-Jewry, with English Jews, is that we tend to be rather, too, well, English. We are very good at fitting in, and on the whole we don t like to make a fuss. This is not a criticism of Englishness, far from it! Nobody loves politeness, tea, scones and toast with marmalade as much as I do. The bit that concerns me is that being like everyone else might not always be the best choice. We are very like our neighbours, but in some ways we are different. Some Jews were brought up to feel like outsiders, and to be mistrustful of others, not surprising, especially in the generations that were born after the war. But this tendency to conceal our differences seems to suggest that being Jewish isn t something to be proud of. And the habit of keeping quiet led many of us to be ever alert to the possibility of anti- Semitism. But when we don t tell our neighbours and colleagues that we are Jewish, we miss the chance to educate them, to experience our own sense of pride, to bring them into a part of our lives that has so much importance for us, and to experience our Jewishness as so much more relevant once we live it day to day. lead a session at your local nursery or primary school? How about finding out how many Jewish people live in your area, and getting in touch with them? You might be surprised! It s very easy in any sort of community to become concerned with only small internal things. We do this because these things are actually very important: the cycle of services, the upkeep of the building, the stationery and the bills. But it is also important to be able to look outwards, to build on the many friendships and alliances we have, both personally and with other faith communities. What better time to make a start than the upcoming Winter Festivals? Let s add our own light to the seasonal festivities let s hear it for Chanukah! Israeli Stamps Do you collect stamps? Are you interested in a collection of Israeli ones? If so, please contact me as I have been given some by a work colleague and I said I d find them a good home. Thanks. Sheila Goldsmith ( ) How many of us, in our community, take part in civic activities as Jews, as representatives of our community? How many of us invite non-jewish friends along to synagogue occasionally, or even once a year? Have you thought of getting the neighbours round for one night of Chanukah this year? Of volunteering to Condolences to Bernice Dinsdale on the death of her Mother Daphne Greenblatt. Michael Levy on the loss of his sisterin-law. 2

Interfaith Report Zvi Friedman, Interfaith Co-ordinator July 1 st. Hilda Rapp came to the Wolverton mosque. Hilda, a Jewish lady involved internationally in peace and interfaith matters, talked about her work and the problems of promoting tolerance among peoples for whom the word has little resonance. July 9 th. A meeting hosted by the local Baha is. After a short prayer session we were introduced to the speaker Dr Mehrdad Massoudi, a former Iranian working in the US for a government agency. Like many scientists I ve met, Mehrdad is profoundly interested in religion and has published books on the subject. An excellent afternoon of stimulating discussion across the meeting of science and religion. July 15 th. The second of this year s CCJ evenings at Turvey Abbey. The speaker on this occasion was Rev Dr Marcus Braybrooke, an internationally recognised authority on interfaith, and author of many books on the subject. I had met Marcus a few times at interfaith events, and it fell to me that evening to introduce him and engage him in discussion. July 16 th. Funeral service at the City Church for Canon Bill Whiffen. For many years until his recent illness, Canon Whiffen was a gentle but insistent promoter of interfaith meeting in the MK area. July 22 nd. Involvement in interfaith springs many surprises. Some weeks ago attendance at a conference on hate crime resulted in an invitation to join the Thames and Chiltern Community Involvement Panel of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The panel, consisting of lay (ie nonlegal) members representing a range of community, religious and ethnic interests, has the duty of commenting on the way that the CPS presents itself to the general public. This was an exploratory meeting held in St Albans. July 30 th. First of what is intended as a regular series of meetings between representatives of the faith communities and MK s two MPs. I wasn t able to attend (evening of the choir service) but Sarah and Marcus Levy did attend to represent our community. July 31 st. Brief visit with Sarah and some visiting friends to the latest exhibition arranged by friend and colleague in interfaith, Anouar Kassim. This one on the subject of calligraphy. Anouar was able to recruit experts from the three Abrahamic faiths to demonstrate and teach calligraphy. August 5 th. This month s meeting of the interfaith group was a guided tour of Bradwell Abbey. Like most of the nation s monastic houses, Bradwell got the chop under Henry Vlll th around Very little remains, and though never one of the great abbeys, the original buildings had been quite substantial. August 21 st. Today was the fourth death anniversary of Handa Shonin, the founding monk of the Buddhist Peace Pagoda and Temple at Willen. Invited to offer some prayers at the service in the temple, I talked a little about the Yahrzeit tradition in Judaism, and said the mourner s kaddish, particularly appropriate since 3

Handa Shonin was a respected teacher in his tradition. August 29 th. This year, as last, the MK Muslim Association ran a local radio programme during the month of Ramadan. I was asked to contribute to a discussion on Radio Ramadan FM on the subject of dietary laws in Judaism and Islam. I represented the progressive position on Kashrut, Dayan Kesselman from the London Beth Din represented the orthodox position (via a telephone link), while a local Muslim scholar talked about Halal. As with so much of the underlay of Judaism and Islam, the parallels between the two religions were much more abundant than the differences. of an orthodox rabbi. He agreed that, in the context of secular education for non- Jewish children, the spelling G-d was not appropriate. September 26 th. First rehearsal of the Cornerstone Chamber Choir at the City Church. We are embarking on Handel s oratorio Israel in Egypt. I don t know the music but I know the story. September 28 th. Reception at the City Church to say farewell to Rev Tim Clapton. Tim has been the Development Chaplain for MK and a strong voice for interfaith. After dividing his time between MK and London, he s now to concentrate his work entirely in London. September 6 th. Again at the Wolverton mosque. This time at a evening ceremony to break the Ramadan fast, to which interfaith and community representatives were invited. Asked to say a few words, I gave a short impromptu talk about Jeremiah, where he counselled the exiled Hebrews in Babylon to support the city where they found themselves, for on its welfare your welfare depends. September 15 th. Meeting of the MK SACRE. We are now well into the production of our second MK Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education in MK schools. My chief job is to comment and, if necessary, edit the sections on Judaism. So far I ve done Key Stage 1, the section for the younger children. Few issues emerged, other than the curiosity G-d. Sadly the all-pervasive disease of political correctness has convinced non- Jews that this is the way we spell God. Before recommending to our RE Advisor that this spelling was the preserve only of the orthodox, I did seek the opinion September 29 th. A party of interfaith tourists organised by the MK Equality Council has been visiting MK s places of worship. The party, 50 in all with their leaders EC director Navrita Atwal and our friend Anouar Kassim, arrived at the synagogue as scheduled on this Wednesday morning. We had 20 minutes. Time for a short talk and questions on Judaism in MK and nationally before they departed for lunch at the Kiln Farm Gurdwara. Film shows I recently showed two films at MKDRS. The amount of 100 was raised and has been donated towards the upkeep of the garden. My thanks to Richard and Cathy Assenheim for their help. The next social event will be the November Serenade on 14 th November. Please see page 16 for more details. Lesley de Mattos 4

Barbara Elliott gave the following talk at the Yom Kipper Mussaf service. Martyrology Barbara Elliott Pauline Zander, my grandmother, was born in Germany in She was murdered in a Polish concentration camp in May This is her story. Pauline, known as Pummi, was a cultured, spiritual intellectual woman. She was very German and very Jewish! She was also a sculptress. My parents, seeing what was happening in Germany under Hitler s reign, decided to leave Berlin and finally, in July l939, managed to get to Britain. My mother Hanne, Pummi s daughter, and my father Paul tried unsuccessfully to get her out. It was too late. On the night of October 31 st 1941 she was deported to the Lodz Ghetto in Poland. Amazingly, as she was in her seventies, she survived from that date to the following May. I never knew the exact next part of her history until last year when, after much research in the Archives of the Jewish Museum in Berlin, I discovered what happened next. This is how I came to be able to do this research. The Berlin Government has been running a Reparation scheme for about 30 years, but I only recently became aware of it. The scheme involves inviting people who had been born in Berlin, and were forced to leave because of the Nazi regime, back for back for one week s visit. Although I didn t actually qualify, as I am too young to have been born in Berlin, my cousin Ursula did, so we decided to accept and go along. We were to be taken to many Jewish sites and to be addressed by many state officials etc. I must admit I had grave doubts and crises of conscience about the whole idea surely a free, first-class trip didn t really make up for the six million and all the dreadful things that had happened. But at least I could go and make up my own mind as to the motives and intentions of the Government. I also have very mixed feelings about Germany. My whole background and culture is German. All my childhood memories involve German. Therefore I find it very difficult to hate all Germans as so many of us seem to. Back to the trip. There were 30 couples, mostly from the States, and nearly all had great reservations and most had never been back to their birthplace before. In spite of all our reservations it was, in fact, an amazing experience. To hear the current Mayor and members of the State Government saying Sorry was pretty powerful. And most importantly, in doing this trip I was able to find out a lot more about my own family and what actually happened to my grandmother and her siblings. Information gleaned from the Archive Department in the Jewish Museum explained many things. Here I quote from the historian, Sir Martin Gilbert, from his book The Holocaust The Jewish Tragedy. He describes events that I now know would have happened to my grandmother, Pummi. Beginning on May 4 th and continuing without pause for eleven days, more than ten thousand Jews were deported from the Lodz ghetto to Chelmo in Poland. These were the Jews who had been brought to Lodz from Western Europe six months earlier. They went according to their place of origin, Berlin first, etc. On May 7 th, the 5

fourth day of the resettlement of the once proud, prosperous Berlin Jews, the Ghetto Chronicle commented, Ghosts, skeletons with swollen faces and extremities, ragged and impoverished, they now left for a further journey on which they were not even allowed to take a knapsack. They had been stripped of everything they owned and only the Eternal Jew was left. Chelmo was an experimental extermination camp. When they arrived, the victims were forced off the train, stripped and taken into what looked like normal lorries. The inner walls were steel metal; there were no seats and the floor was covered with wooden grating and straw mats. Under the grating were tubes leading from the cab. From these tubes out poured the gas. Here, on May 9 th 1942, my grandmother Pummi perished in this most inhumane way. To bring this story up to date, in July I went to Berlin for a special little ceremony. Since 1995, a German artist, Gunter Demning, conceived the idea of commemorating all those victims who had been deported. His eventual target is to have laid enough plaques to represent at least 90% of all those people who were deported and killed. He designed little brass plaques to be placed on the ground outside the doors of the houses from which people were deported. We arranged for one of these Stolpersteine (stumbling blocks) to be laid outside the home where Pauline Zander and my mother Hanne lived, and from which Pauline was deported. It was a very moving time. The Stolperstein is a very simple brass plaque (pictured above) saying only Pauline Zander, her date of birth, the date of deportation and the date she died. Instead of died it says ermordert, murdered, which seems only right! The artist himself was there and laid the Stolperstein definitely a kind of closure to such terrible events. I was very glad I had gone to be part of the ceremony and know that the plaque will always be there as a reminder of what happened to my grandmother. Special Kiddushes There will be a special kiddush after the service on Saturday 27 th November to celebrate the 80 th birthday of Marie May. Hilda Butt would very much like the congregation to join her for Kiddush after the service on Saturday, 11 th December, to mark her 90 th birthday. 7 Lesley Sonn s Cookery Corner Schav Borscht Serves 6 This is a form of borscht with a sweet and sour flavour. Chill overnight. Serve either topped with sour cream, or with the sour cream blended into the soup. This soup is great cold, but can be eaten hot. If I want to make this soup quickly, I use frozen shredded spinach, which works very well. Ingredients 1 lb sorrel or spinach, or 1/2 lb (200 g) pack frozen spinach 1/2 onion, finely chopped 1 1/2 pints (1 litre) water 2 level teaspoons salt 2 level tablespoons sugar Juice of large lemon (3 tablespoons) 2 eggs 5 fl oz (125 ml) soured cream Method If fresh sorrel/spinach is used, rinse well until completely clear of grit. Drain and strip the leaves from the stalks, then shred the leaves finely. Proceed as follows for both frozen and fresh vegetables. Put the greens into a soup pan, together with the onion, water and salt. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the sugar and lemon juice and simmer a further 10 minutes. In the meantime, whisk the eggs well in a large bowl. Pour the hot soup slowly over the eggs. The residual heat will be sufficient to thicken them. Kallat Bereshit and Kallat Torah The custom of giving the special honour of being called up to say the blessings before the last and first readings of the Torah scrolls at Simchat Torah to people who have served the community in a special way goes back a long way. This year council offered the honour of Kallat Torah to Lois Charles and Kallat Bereshit to Sarah Bernarde. Congratulations to Maureen Pruskin who was nominated by the Jewish Chronicle as their Volunteer of the Week in September. Maureen was recently invited to be the only non medical person to give a speech at Professor Christopher B-Lynch s leaving do held at the Postgrad Centre at Milton Keynes Hospital. Prof. B-Lynch was retiring from the NHS and Maureen was invited to speak of her role as a fundraiser for the NHS. 7

Dear Editor, I arrived at Shul on Sunday morning, 10 th October, for the Adult Education session run by our Rabbi and was very pleasantly surprised to see three people beavering away in our garden. Margaret and Howard Mann and Paul Best (husband of Margot who teaches at cheder) had got together to plant lots of winter flowers, eg pansies, about 250 plants in all, which is no mean feat. These plants were kindly donated by the Manns, having been nurtured by Margaret. Obituary: Fanny Campbell Died 11 th September 2010 Fanny was born on 21 st September 1914; she missed her 96 th birthday by just 10 days. According to Shul records, she was the first member to sign on the dotted line, and in the early days did her bit in helping the community to expand. She also had the distinction of being our oldest member. To those who knew her, they saw a small, shy, quiet lady, which she was. As my dear friend, I saw the other Fanny: feisty, very intelligent and outspoken when necessary. The show of flowers provided by Margaret and Howard, together with those previously planted by Rosalind, is going to look wonderful this winter. It was also very kind of Paul to volunteer (unless he was roped in!). Isn t it lovely that someone is carrying on the legacy of gardening left by our Chairman, Rosalind? Sue Luckman Her life began in Acton in a lively Jewish home and she grew up very much loved by her parents, four brothers and one sister. She met her husband Bill during the Second World War in Bath, whilst doing munitions work. Her Bill, as she always referred to him, was not Jewish, but a Scottish Presbyterian; however, love overcomes most things, as it did for them. But Fanny never forgot her Jewish roots. She had two children, a daughter (who sadly died at the age of two) and a son, who is also called Bill, who gave her two grandsons and one great granddaughter. Sadly, at the age of 63, her husband Bill died, but with the resilience she always had, Fanny got on with her life. She moved to Stony Stratford, and eventually to Oldbrook, where she lived for the rest of her life. The shul s new gardening team: Paul Best, Margaret Mann and Howard Mann Fanny was an accountant and worked into her mid-seventies. She was very much thought of by her boss, hence the reason for her long working life. She had a great love of politics and we had some great debates. She was a staunch 8

and paid-up member of the Liberal Party, and worked very hard for the party well into her early nineties. I tried on many occasions to show her the error of her ways in supporting the Liberal Party, but never succeeded. Her love of education was such that she joined U3A when she finally retired, taking up subjects such as English literature and language, religious studies and art. She continued until the last three years of her life when, sadly, her hearing deteriorated, preventing her from continuing with her studies. She also loved travel and visited many exciting places. Fanny had a long and fulfilling life and her one regret was losing her Bill too soon. I feel privileged to have been her friend for nearly 20 years and will miss her very much. These memories are also those of Tony and Adam. Lesley Sonn Blue Charity Boxes Several members have had one of the Synagogue s Blue Charity Boxes for quite a while now and hopefully these need emptying. As these should not be emptied by anyone other than the appointed person at the Synagogue, could they please be returned so the money can be paid into the bank. New boxes are available upon request. Having a Blue Box is a good way of saving for the Shul by putting odd coins in them. It is surprising how quickly the boxes get full. I had one box recently with just under 50 in it. Some of the money was in notes! Maureen Pruskin Synagogue Library Sylvia Gurney visited the Synagogue to see the Montague Library which is named after her (late) father, Edgar Montague (Monty) Long. Sylvia donated several books he had collected over many years, all with Jewish themes. Synagogue members can borrow these books by contacting the Lois Charles, the Synagogue Librarian. Sylvia (84), who is not of the Jewish faith, was in Milton Keynes Hospital recovering from an operation. When the Hospital Chaplain visited her ward, Sylvia asked if she could arrange for someone from the Synagogue to visit her as she wanted to talk about her roots with Judaism through her father. Maureen Pruskin, Welfare for the Synagogue and a Volunteer at the Hospital, was contacted and a bedside meeting took place, culminating with Sylvia visiting the Synagogue one Shabbat. It was after this visit that Sylvia donated the books. Sylvia Gurney (r) with Synagogue Librarian, Lois Charles 9
