2 Egypt from Pharaohs to Imams A WELL-KNOWN author was approached by a magazine editor to write 2,000 words about Egyptian history. After looking at the editor as if he was mad, the author had said he had more urgent things to do like drinking coffee or watching Mo Salah playing for Liverpool. Egypt, he said, was a very sandy and dusty country. But if you swept the dust and sand away, you would find layer upon layer of history going back thousands and thousands of years. Egyptian history, he added, made even the pyramids look old. So how could he write about Egyptian history in 2,000 words? Even without going into pre-history, as it were, he would have to mention 130 Pharaohs and 31 dynasties. And if he started at the beginning, of which no one was sure of, he would have to begin with the Palaeolithic era (over 30,000 years ago) and move to Mesolithic (about 13,000 years ago). Then and only then could he move onto the Pharaohs, the pyramids, the great temples and the Sphinx (5,000 years ago). Then there was Alexander the Great and the world s biggest library at Alexandria, consisting of some 40,000 volumes, burnt by mistake by Caesar s rampaging troops in the 2nd century CE. Copts, Egyptian Christians who say Apostle Mark is their founder, appeared in 4 CE. Islam only swept down the Nile in the 7th century after Sassanid and Byzantine periods of dominance at the hands of Prophetic Companion, Amr ibn As, and 4, 000 troops. They overwhelmed the Mediterranean port of The pyramids and the temples were not built by aliens, they were built by us. Alexandria in 641 CE. There is just so much, said the author. Today s Sisi era, and the short rule of the ikhwan after the events of 2011, is hardly a blip on the historic radar. Egyptians, he continues, have proved one thing to us. They are resourceful and they are resilient they are much bigger than their politics. Egypt borders on the Sudan, Libya and the Sahara. Jordan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the Sinai and the Red Sea are to our east, with Gaza to the south. You can say we are in a politically volatile neighbourhood. Egypt is a country of natural cycles, says our author changing the subject, explaining that from June to September (before Aswan) the Nile flood used to spread fertile topsoil from Uganda and Ethiopia across its alluvial plains, ancient soils that still sustain and feed over 88 million people. In fact, Egypt used to be called Kermet, which means the rich soil, its Semitic and Qur anic agnomen, Misr, connoting the land. Other sources say Misr is derived from Mizraim, the son of Ham, the son of Noah, who settled along the Nile after the Great Flood. By now, our author is in full stride, the editor sipping his thimbleful of syrupy qahwa or coffee as the years reel by. Let me tell you one thing, says the author, us Egyptians are not stupid. We had our own culture, influenced by others yes but we had our own understanding of the world. The ancient Pharaohs might have worshipped many gods I know Akhenaten was the exception but our forefathers were Intellectual beings, despite this. The pyramids and the temples were not built by aliens, they were built by us. Not by you Europeans, but by us. The first pyramids were Nubian. And it is us who influenced the Mesoamerican Olmec civilization The author pauses. He tells the editor that his forefathers were keen astronomers. They saw the divine in the skies. The Giza pyramid complex was a mirror to the Orion constellation, the meandering Nile seen as an earthly Milky Way. Graham Hancock and others, have all proved what we knew, he says. We were a nation that looked to the skies for our souls. Our ancestors also had a fine sense of judgement. They said that if
