Do I get a chance to present my project in person? If you are comfortable, you will have the chance to briefly introduce your project to the judges and general audience; You may want to write out some points or put together a script and Rehearse it as well. Also be prepared for interes ng ques ons from the judges. This part is low key and op onal. We want you to be recognized for your work. How will my project be judged? There will be several judges to evaluate each par cipant s project and presenta on. The judging criteria is a ached Will there be prizes? Everyone who par cipates is a winner, and all of your names will Insha'Allah go to Hour for prayers. And there will be prizes as well. Tips on crea ng a winning project Start with a reference from the Holy Quran and ask how it relates to solving an important ques on or understanding an important phenomenon in science. Based on this, simply tell a brief scien fic story or answer an important scien fic ques on. Example of a three to five minute oral presenta on of a poster? All group members has to share a oral poster presenta on. Assalamo alaykum. My name is Samra, and I am in yr 7 from the majlis The tle of my poster is A neighbour's ck bite and the risk of Lyme. The focus of my poster is on a true story of how my family and I figured out whether my next door neighbour s ck 20

bite would lead to Lyme Disease. The poster is inspired by verse 27 of Sura Baqarah from the Holy Quran. The transla on is Allah does not feel shy (or embarrassed) at men oning the example of even a small insect because of what it carries above it. Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV (rahmullah alaihe) explained that in this verse Allah has a ached wondrous things within what appear to be even the most insignificant creatures; some of these things are bad, and yet others have important benefits that we haven t yet figured out. A ck is no excep on. Thus the aims of my poster were to examine why a small ck bite can be a serious issue, to understand how Lyme Disease is transmi ed from a ck, and to assess the risk of Lyme Disease a er a ck bite. My research led us to analyse under a microscope the type of ck my neighbour was bi en by, whether the ck could carry Lyme Disease, and the early and late signs of the disease. To find out what we concluded about my neighbour s rela vely small but really important ck bite, please see the details of my poster. Jazakallah. 71 If your poster is clear and concise, an individual should be able to read it in less than 10 minutes. The content of a research poster is generally broken up into a few sec ons. The heading usually contains a short tle, author, and affilia on. A school, company, or organiza on logo is also a nice touch. Depending on what applies to your topic, you could break the content into the following sec ons: an introduc on to your research ques on, an overview of your approach, a discussion regarding your results, your conclusion, references for the materials that you have used, and an acknowledgment of the support and assistance from others. Title A well thought out tle will a ract viewers and will clarify the subject ma er of your poster. Assuming the overall look of your poster has go en their a en on, you need to make sure that the tle keeps it. Make sure to keep the length of the tle as brief as possible without taking away crucial informa on. The tle should be no longer than 2 lines. Abstract Most mee ngs will require you to submit an abstract 2 for approval before admi ng you to present for their poster session. Many mes the abstract is also made available in a mee ng catalogue or online database for later viewing by mee ng a endees. The majority of posters do not contain an abstract. However if you have to include an abstract on your poster, make it very short; remember, the poster itself is already a condensed report of your work. Introduc on When construc ng your introduc on try to keep it to 1 2 paragraphs. (Roughly 150 words). Avoid using technical defini ons unless absolutely necessary. The introduc 71

on sec on is here to introduce your issue, so be sure to not bore your readers right away with excessive informa on. You can even include graphics if they will help the viewer understand the work that you have done. Materials And Methods In this sec on you will cover the materials and methods (shocking!) that you used in your research process. Feel free to include any images, charts, or graphs here that will help the viewer be er understand your process. Also, don t forget to provide a ra onale to explain why you chose these methods! This is just as important as the steps you took. Results It s always a good idea to begin the Results sec on with an ini al summary of your results. Don t address your research ques on just yet; instead, just address the general aspects of the data you collected or the number of valid data obtained. In your next paragraph, you can discuss the rela onship between the data and your research ques on. What exactly does your data mean? Be sure to include any graphics that can help show you data visually, as the readers can understand graphics more easily and quickly than blocks of text. Some mes less is more. Be selec ve when deciding what images, charts, and graphs make it onto your poster! Charts and graphs are usually more effec ve than tables, but whatever you choose to use, make sure everything is labelled clearly! A graph with missing labels or a table without a tle will just leave the reader confused. Also, carefully consider what type of chart or graph will best show your results. Conclusions In your conclusion sec on you want to briefly review your research ques ons and the results you obtain. You also should add why your results are interes ng or significant. TIPS: Relate your results to other published re 72

search in the field. This will give your research more impact on your readers as well as show your professionalism in the study. You can also suggest con nuing research that would build upon your current study. References If you have an extremely extensive list of references, you may want to break it into 2 columns. It is very important to follow the format required by the conference you are a ending. It is common to shrink the font of the References sec on if it becomes overbearing and long. Acknowledgments You can acknowledge people who have helped you with your work, such as other members of your research group or your funding source. If there are any conflicts of interest regarding you and the work you have presented, be sure to include that here. It is always important to keep you and your work above reproach. Keep this sec on as short as possible. Fewer than 40 words is best. Contact Informa on When adding e mails and web addresses, be sure to deac vate the hyperlink so they don t show up as blue with and underline. A lot of posters include this sec on so the readers are able to contact the author later or read more about the research. You can include your or website address, links to relevant resources, If you choose to include this sec on, keep it very brief. 73

General Tip: Once again, regardless of the content, keep it simple and don't overload with text. Brevity is key! Summarize your informa on and remember the goal is to make your poster easy to scan over quickly, so use bulleted lists whenever possible. While you may not be a graphic designer, think about how you could present the informa on in a more visually interes ng way. Use charts and graphs wherever possible instead of harder to read tables or paragraphs of text. Crea ve infographics have become increasingly popular and are a great way to convey informa on more a rac vely. (h ps:// fic poster parts.aspx) 74
