4 Technical Report for RADCON Training In the Period From 1 st April 2004 to 30 th November 2006 This report covers the training activities during the period from 1 st April 2004 to 30 th November 2006 containing the first, second, and third training cycles. A separate technical report of TOT will be issued after finishing the TOT of Fayoum faculty of agriculture. The main objective during this period is to train the extension officers and researchers on using RADCON. The sites of trainees were selected according to the list obtained from CAAES and Central Administration of Research Stations and confirmed by the project steering committee. 1. Overall Objectives The overall objectives during the first, second, and third training cycles were as follows: - Training on overall computer system components, fixing common computer faults, formatting hard disk, installing Microsoft windows and derivers and service pack, installing antivirus software and using it, and training on IMARK-Electronic Document Management. - Introduction to computer operation: windows, web browsing, , MS-Messenger, operating RADCON modules: forum, news and events, browsing and searching the extension documents, statistical databases, grower problems and expert systems. - Reviewing the usage of VERCON modules, address real problems that already faced VERCON users gathered from different sites and respond to any issues upon the request of the trainees. - Training on using MS-front page, covert extension documents to HTML file, uploading extension document to the server. - Monitor the RADCON activities in the extension centers, agriculture directorates, central administrations, research stations, research institutions, and media support centers to solve any problems that could have occurred during operation, and to train attendees on any new features that could have been added to the system. 3

5 2. Training Methodology - The training courses have been conducted using lectures, hands on, and discussion. - Material is to be distributed (hard copy and soft copy on CD) to the trainees in the beginning of each training period. - The trainees do their practical training according to the instruction of the trainers by using one computer for one/two trainees. - At the end of each training period, evaluation should be done. The evaluation would be done in two ways. The first way, a quiz must be done to indicate the outcome of the training. The second way, a questionnaire would be done to clarify the positives and negatives of the training and the future prospective to improve the coming training courses in that concern. - The training day start from 9 am to 3:30 pm with an half hour coffee break 3. Selection of Trainees Selection of trainees during the first, second, and third training cycles was as follows: - Extension centers, agriculture directorates, and specific research stations according to the list obtained from CAAES and Central administration of research stations and confirmed by the project steering committee. - Research Institutes, Media Support Centers, and Rice Research Center. 4

18 TOT on Using RADCON Training on Publishing Extension Documents Through RADCON 5 ٩ 45 Total ٥٢١ ٤٤٦٠ Monitoring Meetings 36 monitoring meetings have been conducted during the first, second and third training cycles. 8 monitoring meetings have been conducted in the interval between the first and second training cycles and funded from petty cache not through LOA. 4 monitoring meetings have been conducted after the third training cycle. Total number of monitoring meetings is 48. Number of participants in monitoring meetings is about 160 from AD, EC, SRS, RI, RRC, Central Administrations. 7. Problems confronted the training process - Delay of delivering the equipments: the policy of distributing the equipments to the sites is that, as soon as certain sites obtain the Using RADCON training course, the equipments should be established in these sites so that the trainees apply what they learned on their jobs. The delay of delivering the equipments caused in delay the training for about four months in the first training cycle. - Most of trainees have not any background about computers: this point has been overcome by increasing the number of training days allocated to the introduction to computer operation. - Most of trainees are not familiar in English: the problem is that the training course contains three units from the module management of electronic documents of IMARK which have been written in English, this entail increasing effort during training. Translation and adaptation IMARK to Arabic is required to increase training efficiency. - Some of trainers have not enough expertise about the training process: the national consultant who frequently attends the training and guides the trainers has solved this point. - Some trainees who come from faraway Governorates such as El-Wady El-Gedid, Toshki, Kena, Matrouh, and Sohag ask if the incentive (100 L.E) of attending follow up meeting can be increased because it does not cover the traveling cost: Dr. Mahmoud Rafea, NPD promised that this request will be discussed in the next executive committee. - The terms of payment in LOA mostly consist of 4 installments, the interval between finishing the activities of an installment and reaching the installment to the account of CLAES or FCRI takes about 4 6 weeks. This entail halt the training during this period: it is better that the terms of payment become 2 or 3 installments. 17

Best Practices In The Three Training Cycles - Nine training periods on using RADCON, 6 refreshment-training periods on using RADCON, 3 training periods on Maintenance of common computer operation faults, and one training period on Publishing Extension Documents through RADCON have been conducted through this interval workshops have been conducted for the extension officers and researchers to solve any problems that could have occurred during operation, and to train attendees on any new features that could have been added to the system, and also to monitor the RADCON activities in the extension centers, agriculture directorates, central administrations, research stations, research institutions, and media support centers. - Number of extension centers participated in RADCON was 26 at the beginning of the project.
