2 Narrated By 'Umar bin Abi Salama I was a boy under the care of Allah's Apostle and my hand used to go around the dish while I was eating. So Allah's Apostle said to me, 'O boy! Mention the Name of Allah and eat with your right hand, and eat of the dish what is nearer to you." Since then I have applied those instructions when eating. (Bukhari) To mention Allah s Name means to say Bismillah. We should say Bismillah before we begin to eat. What happens if you don t say bismillah before you eat? Let s find out Narrated By Umayyah Ibn Makhshi: Umayyah was sitting and a man was eating. He did not mention Allah's Name until there remained the last morsel. When he raised it to his mouth, he said: In the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end of it. The Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) laughed and said: The devil kept eating along with him, but when he mentioned Allah's Name, he (shaytaan) vomited what was in his belly. (Abu Dawud) Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: When a person enters his house and mentions the Name of Allah at the time of entering it and while eating the food, Satan says (addressing himself: You have no place to spend the night and no evening meal; but when he enters without mentioning the Name of Allah, the Satan says: You have found a place to spend the night, and when he does not mention the Name of Allah while eating food, he (the Satan) says: You have found a place to spend the night and evening meal. (Muslim 5006) 2

Name of Allah in its beginning and end. Say: Bismillahi fee awwalihi wa akhiri It is important that we correctly pronounce (say) our words.

3 As we read, we should mention the Name of Allah before eating by saying bismillah. If we don t say this, Shaytan eats right along with us. If we forget to mention Allah s name before we eat, when we remember (that we forgot to say it) we should say: Bismillahi fee awwalihi wa akhiri This means In the Name of Allah in its beginning and end. Say: Bismillahi fee awwalihi wa akhiri It is important that we correctly pronounce (say) our words. So let s practice Watch your teacher as he/she says Bismillahi fee awwalihi wa akhiri Say Bismillahi fee awwalihi wa akhiri correctly 10 times in front of your teacher. 11 Just as we remember Allah before we eat, we should remember Allah after we eat. Narrated By Abu Umamah Whenever the dining sheet of the Prophet was taken away (i.e., whenever he finished his meal), he used to say: "Al-Hamdu lillah kathiran taiyiban mubarakan fihi ghaira makfiy wala muwada' wala mustaghna'anhu Rabbuna."(Bukhari) Narrated By Abu Umamah Whenever the Prophet finished his meals (or when his dining sheet was taken away), he used to say. "Praise be to Allah Who has satisfied our needs and quenched our thirst. Your favor cannot by compensated or denied." Once he said, upraise be to You, O our Lord! Your favor cannot be compensated, nor can be left, nor can be dispensed with, O our Lord!" Choose an after eating duaa (see next page) to learn and say it after every meal. 13 (Older Students) Copy the duaa that you have selected to memorize, daily in your notebook. If assigned, copy it in stair step fashion, where you write the first word on the first line. On the second line, write the first and second word, on the third line, write the first three words in order, etc. Work on memorizing it each day and of course, during meal times. (Older Students) Learn what each word in the duaa you are learning means. Write the duaa out and write the English translation word (or phrase) by word. Try to pick out the three (or four) root letters in each word. Using a dictionary like Hans Wehr, look up the root and see if you can find the word. If you do, does it make sense in this context? Consult your teacher for help if needed. For younger students, teacher can give a brief summarization of what the duaa is saying. 13

14 Teacher prep: Print out a good copy of the duaa student is learning. Cut up the duaa into squares, one word per square and scramble. Have student put the squares in order to form the duaa. For younger students, provide an uncut copy to use when working through unscrambling. 14

Since then I have applied those instructions when eating.(bukhari) Salim, on the authority of his father, reported Allah s Messenger(salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: None of you should eat with his left hand and drink with that (left hand) for the Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with that hand. (Muslim, 5010) We should eat and drink with our right hand because the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) told us to do this. In addition, Shaytan drinks and eats with his left hand and we do not want to be like Shaytan as he is our enemy (against us). 16

17 If you have trouble telling which hand is which, try this trick. The word Left starts with what letter? L If you hold up your left hand (with the back of your hand facing you) with your fingers sticking straight up and your thumb points out, your fingers and thumb make the letter L, L for Left If you do this with your right, the L will be backwards. 18 Trace your right hand in the box. On your hand tracing write, I eat with my right. Place this in the area where you eat to remind you while eating. 19 Vocabulary: Kul, Kulee Yameen Shimaal Yakul When the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said eat with your right, he said: Kul biyameenik. Say: Kul biyameenik. Kul is a command (to tell something to do something) for eat. If you wanted to tell a girl to eat (or to do something else), you would add an ee sound to the end: Kulee. To say a he eats/is eating (third person), you would say yakul(u). Example: Muhammad yakul. (Muhammad eats/is eating). Abi yakul. (My father eats/is eating.) To say a she (third person) eats/is eating, you would say takul(u) Example: Samirah takul(u). (Samirah eats/is eating.) Ummy takul(u) (My mother eats/is eating.) 19

20 Yameen is right. Shimaal is left. Bi means with. Ash Shaytaan yakul bish shimaal. (Shaytaan eats with the left.) If you see someone eating with their left hand, you can say (politely) Kul(ee) biyameenik or Ash Shaytaan yakul bish shimaal. Practice saying these two sentences several times. Pick a he and a she in your class/family. Tell someone that he/she is eating. What hand do we eat and drink with? Why? What hand does shaytan eat and drink with? Say two phrases you could say to remind someone to eat with their right hand. How do you say right and left in Arabic? End of Lesson 20

21 Anas b. Malik reported that there was brought to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) a cup of milk mixed with water, while there was on his right a desert Arab and on his left Abu Bakr. He (the Holy Prophet) drank; he then gave it to the desert Arab and said: (Give to one) who is on the right, then again who is on the right. (Muslim 5032) No matter who may be on our left (someone older, younger, mother, father, etc), we pass to the right because this is what the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said we should do. 21

24 Idea: Apply what you learned in this lesson by practicing which direction to pass food during a meal. Teacher Instructions Materials needed: plate or object to acts as a plate/dish. Simulate an activity as in the worksheet where students/family members sit at the table/maidah. Let children take turns being it and have members sit at the table around the child. The child must tell to whom he/she would pass the plate. Tell everyone to scramble (going this way and that (while teacher/parent counts to an unknown number). When teacher shouts, "stop," everyone sits at a different location. The child who is it must decide who is on his right and pass the plate to that person. Continue, letting everyone have a chance to be it. End of Lesson 24

25 Narrated By 'Umar bin Al Salama, who was the son of Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet: Once I ate a meal with Allah's Apostle and I was eating from all sides of the dish. So Allah's Apostle said to me, "Eat of the dish what is nearer to you."(bukhari) When choosing/eating food from a tray/dish, we should pick/eat from what is closest to us. At the time of the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) and in many Muslim households, members of the family all eat from one dish. 25
