Āranyaka Parva Chapters Swami Tadatmananda Arsha Bodha Center प व च Draupadi said draupadyuvāca न ह धम न श य य Not by dharma or kindness, neha dharmānṛśaṁsyābhyāṁ न य न ज व न च nor by forgiveness, nor by honesty na kṣāntyā nārjavena ca प ष यम त does a person gain prosperity, puruṣaḥ śriyam āpnoti न घ ण व न क ह चत nor by fear of censure. na ghṛṇitvena karhicit (31.2) र ज न धम ग र Aki king who protects t dharma - rājānaṁ dharma-goptāraṁ धम र त र त dharma protects t him. dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ इ त म तम य ण Thus I have heard from the elders. iti me śrutam āryāṇāṁ व त म य न र त But I think dharma does not protect you. tvāṁ tu manye na rakṣati (31.7)

2 र ज पर तय ब OKi King, due to your wrong thinking, rājan parītayā buddhyā वषम ऽ पर जय when defeated d in the rigged dice game, viṣame 'kṣa-parājaye र य वस य य ध न your kingdom, wealth, weapons, rājyaṁ vasūny āyudhāni त च स न ज त brothers and even me were lost. bhrātṝn māṁ cāsi nirjitaḥ (31.17) यथ द मय य ष OKi King, just as a wooden doll yathā dārumayī yoṣā नरव र सम हत suspended d (on strings) naravīra samāhitā ईरय य म न is made to move its limbs, īrayaty aṅgam aṅgāni तथ र ज म ज so too, these people (are made to move), O King. tathā rājann imāḥ prajāḥ (31.22) ऋज म द व द य य You are straightforward, gentle, friendly, ṛjor mṛdor vadānyasya मत स यव दन modest and truthful. thf hrīmataḥ satya-vādinaḥ कथम यसनज How could addiction to gambling katham akṣa-vyasanajā ब र प तत तव afflict your mind? buddhir āpatitā tava (31.18) शक न त त ब व Abi bird dbound with a string is śakunis tantu-baddho vā नयत ऽयमन र restricted, ti t not tindependent, d niyato 'yam anīśvaraḥ ई र य वश त न under the control of its master, īśvarasya vaśe tiṣṭhan न य ष न न भ not the master of itself or others. nānyeṣāṁ nātmanaḥ prabhuḥ (31.24)

3 ह त म मद ध त Merely an instrument t of God is this hetu-mātram idaṁ dhātuḥ शर र स तम body, known as the field (of experience), śarīraṁ kṣetra-sañjñitam य न क रयत कम through which God produces actions yena kārayate karma श भ श भफल वभ having desirable and undesirable results. śubhāśubha-phalaṁ vibhuḥ (31.30) कम च क तम व त If the results of an deed d accrue karma cet kṛtam anveti कत र न यम छ त to the doer and not anyone else, kartāraṁ nānyam ṛcchati कम ण त न प प न then with the results of that sinful deed, karmaṇā tena pāpena ल यत न नम र God is certainly tainted. lipyate nūnam īśvaraḥ (31.41) तव म म पद Seeing this misfortune of yours tavemām āpadaṁ dṛṣṭvā सम च स य धन and Duryodhana's prosperity, samṛddhiṁ ca suyodhane ध त र गह य प थ O King, I blame God dhātāraṁ garhaye pārtha वषम य ऽन प य त who oversees such unfairness. viṣamaṁ yo 'nupaśyati (31.39) य ध र उव च Yudhishthira hthi said, yudhiṣṭhira uvāca

4 व ग च पद ण Beautiful, colorful, l and gentle valgu citra-padaṁ ślakṣṇaṁ य स न वय वच is your speech, O Draupadi. yājñaseni tvayā vacaḥ उ त तम भर But with these words, heard by us, uktaṁ tac-chrutam asmābhir न त त भ षस You speak of denying the scriptures. nāstikyaṁ tu prabhāṣase (32.1) अत न ह स क य ण Therefore, O Draupadi, you should not ato nārhasi kalyāṇi ध त र धम म व च reject or doubt God or dharma dhātāraṁ dharmam eva ca रज म ढ न मनस with a mind deluded by impurity. rajo-mūḍhena manasā श त म व च (reject or doubt) kṣeptuṁ śaṅkitum eva ca (32.14) य स व स म य Vyasa, Vasistha, Maitreya, vyāso vasiṣṭho maitreyo न रद ल मश श क Narada, Lomasha, Shuka, nārado lomaśaḥ śukaḥ अ य च ऋषय स and other wise rishis reached perfection anye ca ṛṣayaḥ siddhā धम ण व स च तस by means of dharma alone. dharmeṇaiva sucetasaḥ (32.11) अ ष म णम य Ignoring the teachings of our elders, ārṣaṁ pramāṇam utkramya धम नप रप लयन failing to uphold dharma, dharmānaparipālayan सव श तग म ढ a fool transgressing all scriptures sarva-śāstrātigo mūḍhaḥ श ज स न व द त finds no peace in life. śaṁ janmasu na vindati (32.20)

5 फलद वह व य But those who know the giver of all results is God, phaladaṁ tviha vijñāya ध त र य स व in pursuit of the highest h dhātāraṁ śreyasi dhruve धम त चर क ण they follow dharma, O Draupadi. dharmaṁ te hyācaran kṛṣṇe त धम सन तनम That indeed is our eternal religion. tad dhi dharma-sanātanam (32.28) न फल दश न म Just because results are not seen, dharma na phalādarśanād dharmaḥ श त य न द वत should not be doubted. d The gods śaṅkitavyo na devatāḥ य य च म न should be worshipped without lapse yaṣṭavyaṁ cāpramattena द त य च नस यत and charity should be given without reluctance. dātavyaṁ cānasūyatā (32.36) कम ण म त प य न For pious deeds d karmaṇām utapuṇyānāṁ प प न च फल दय and dfor harmful ldeeds, d the results that tarise pāpānāṁ ca phalodayaḥ भव यय व and when those results come and go prabhavaś cāpyayaś caiva द वग न भ म न is a mystery even to the gods, O Draupadi. deva-guhyāni bhāmini (32.33) त स शय क ण Therefore, O Draupadi, let your doubts tasmāt tesaṁśayaḥ kṛṣṇe न ह र इव न यत vanish like the morning mist nīhāra iva naśyatu यव य सव म त त having understood the truth of all this. vyavasya sarvam astīti न त भ वम स ज Abandon your denial of the scriptures. nāstikyaṁ bhāvam utsṛja (32.38)

6 प व च Draupadi said, draupadyuvāca अ त ह लप म दम Overcome by misery, I uttered this complaint. ārtāhaṁ pralapām īdam इ त म व भ रत Understand d me thus, O Yudhishthira. hthi iti māṁ viddhi bhārata भ य वल प य म Even more will I complain. bhūyaś ca vilapiṣyāmi स मन त ब ध म Listen to me with a clear mind. sumanās tan nibodha me (33.2) न वम य न गह च Ih have not tdisregarded d dor rejected nāvamanye na garhe ca धम प थ कथ न dharma at all, O Yudhishthira. hthi dharmaṁ pārtha kathañcana ई र क त एव हम Why should I disregard God, īśvaraṁ kuta evāham अवम य ज प तम the lord of all creatures? avamaṁsye prajāpatim (33.1) उ थ नम भज न त The results of past karmas are known utthānam abhijānanti सव भ त न भ रत by all beings, O Yudhishthira. hthi sarva-bhūtāni bhārata य फलम त They experience the visible results pratyakṣaṁ phalam aśnanti कम ण ल कस कम of karma, witnessed by all. karmaṇāṁ loka-sākṣikam (33.6)

7 य प क प ष Whatever (results) a person yac cāpi kiñcit puruṣo द न म लभ य त obtains, being ordained d diṣṭaṁ nāma labhaty uta द व न व धन प थ by God, O Yudhishthira, daivena vidhinā pārtha त व म त न तम that is certainly understood as "daiva". tad daivam iti niścitam (33.15) एव हठ द व Results coming from chance, coming from God, evaṁ haṭhāc ca daivāc ca वभ व कम ण तथ or coming from nature -- svabhāvāt karmaṇas tathā य न त प षस whatever a person obtains, yāni prāpnoti puruṣas त फल प व कम ण that is due to one's prior actions. tat phalaṁ pūrva-karmaṇaḥ (33.18) य वय कम ण क त Through h one's own actions, whatever yat svayaṁ karmaṇā kiñcit फलम त प ष results a person obtains, phalam āpnoti pūruṣaḥ य च ष seen with one's own eyes, pratyakṣaṁ cakṣuṣā dṛṣṭaṁ त प ष म त तम that is called "paurusa." (born of human effort) tat pauruṣam iti smṛtam (33.16) ध त प ह वकम व Ishvara, as the giver of the results of action, dhātāpi hi svakarmaiva त त ह त भर र according to each individual id action, tais tair hetubhir īśvaraḥ वदध त वभ य ह gives each individual result vidadhāti vibhajyeha फल प व क त न ण म of actions previously done by people. phalaṁ pūrva-kṛtaṁ nṛṇām (33.19)

8 य य प ष क त Whatever action a person yad dhyayaṁ puruṣaḥ kiñcit क त व श भ श भम does, good or bad, kurute vai śubhāśubham त त व हत व the result is given by Ishvara, tad dhātṛ-vihitaṁ viddhi प व कम फल दयम according to the act done before. pūrva-karma-phalodayam (33.20) मनस थ व न य Having chosen a goal with one's mind, manasārthān viniścitya प त कम ण then obtaining i through h action paścāt prāpnoti karmaṇā ब प व वय ध र what was decided, a wise buddhi-pūrvaṁ svayaṁ dhīraḥ प ष त क रणम person is the agent in this case. puruṣas tatra kāraṇam (33.23) त ष त ष ह क य ष According to each action, teṣu teṣu hi kṛtyeṣu व नय मह र Ishvara determines the results. viniyoktā maheśvaraḥ सव भ त न क त य O Yudhishthira, all beings sarva-bhūtāni kaunteya क रय यवश य प are compelled (to receive the results). kārayaty avaśāny api (33.22) सव म व हठ न क "Everything is by chance," says someone. sarvam eva haṭhenaike द न क वद य त "Everything is ordained," d says another. diṣṭenaike vadanty uta प ष य ज क चद "Everything is due to one's effort," others say. puruṣa-prayatnajaṁ kecit धम त यत In three ways is this explained. traidham etan nirucyate (33.30)

9 क व ठ क त Partially due to what is ordained, d partially due to chance, kiñcid daivād dhaṭhāt kiñcit क द व वकम त and partially due to one's own effort, kiñcid eva svakarmataḥ प ष फलम त a person obtains the result. puruṣaḥ phalam āpnoti चत थ न क रणम There is no fourth cause. caturthaṁ nātra kāraṇam क व त न थ स म "Though h I try, my goal is not kurvato nārtha-siddhir me भवत त ह भ रत gained," thus, O Yudhishthira, hthi bhavatīti ha bhārata नव द न ग त य one should not despair nirvedo nātra gantavyo व त य कम ण because there are two other causes for results. dvāvetau hyasya karmaṇaḥ (33.47) क शल तज न त Skillful l people understand d this, kuśalāḥ pratijānanti य त व वद ष जन those who know reality. ye tattva-viduṣo janāḥ (33.32) ण म पत प व Long ago, with my father brāhmaṇaṁ me pitā pūrvaṁ व सय म स प डतम a learned brahmana once lived. vāsayāmāsa paṇḍitam स ऽ अथ मम ह He taught all this to us, so 'smā artham imaṁ prāha प म भरतष भ to my father and to me, O Yudhishthira. pitre me bharatarṣabha (33.56)
