Vision We envision African surgeons living the Gospel and ministering to the sick. Mission PAACS exists to train and disciple African surgeons to glorify God and to provide excellent, compassionate care to those most in need. 2 PAACS Prayer Guide

PAN-AFRICAN ACADEMY OF CHRISTIAN SURGEONS Dear PAACS Family, It is a privilege to take our concerns and burdens to God in prayer. Through prayer, we are able to access the throne of our creator and bring our requests to Him. Prayer is a powerful gift that allows us to communicate directly with our God who is able to change circumstances. With God all things are possible. God continues to bless the PAACS mission of training and discipling African surgeons to glorify Him by providing excellent, compassionate care to those most in need. PAACS is currently training 76 surgeons in our 12 surgical programs in 8 countries in Africa. God has been gracious and is expanding our programs beyond our current borders. We are adding 3 additional programs: 2 orthopaedic surgery programs and 1 cardiothoracic surgery program. In addition, PAACS has graduated 78 surgeons over the last 22 years and these graduates are now serving in 20 countries. By the end of 2018, we anticipate graduating an additional 10 surgeons, bringing us to a total of 88 PAACS graduates in Africa. Your prayers are vital to this ministry. We cannot do all that we do without the help of God and your prayers. We ask that you pray daily through this 30-day Prayer Guide. Please pray for the ministry of PAACS, our programs, faculty, residents and each of the prayer requests in this Prayer Guide. Through your prayer God changes impossible situations, provides guidance to those in need of direction, provides courage to the fearful, gives hope to the hopeless, brings strength to the weary, brings healing to the body and soul, brings salvation to the lost and the love of Jesus Christ to all. PAACS is grateful for your prayers. Your prayers are invaluable and it is prayer that sustains all that we do. Blessings, Susan Koshy, JD, MPH Executive Director Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons PAACS Prayer Guide

Let Us Join Together In Prayer Among all of God s creation we, weak humanity saved by grace, have the wonderful privilege and responsibility of communicating with our Creator. Part of this communication is God s call to a life of intercessory prayer (Eph. 6:18). When we intercede we touch the throne of God s grace. When we fulfill the ministry of intercession, we complete what some have called the trinity of intercession. Jesus is the first person of the trinity of intercession. One of the greatest blessings of the Christian life is that Jesus has prayed for us (John 17:9). Being the exact nature of God and the radiance of His glory He is reigning today from the right hand of God s throne (Heb. 1:3). One of His ministries from the throne is interceding for the saints (Heb. 7:25). Because of who Jesus is and the position He occupies, we can with great confidence and boldness come before His throne with prayers and supplications (Heb. 4:16). The Holy Spirit is the second person of the trinity of intercession. Yes, the Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses. Whether it be resisting temptation, walking by the Spirit or supernatural empowerment to accomplish our God-given ministry. However, one of the most powerful expressions of the work of the Spirit in our lives is in the arena of prayer. The Spirit can move us to pray on certain occasions and give us the energy we need to pray. But perhaps the most encouraging thing is that the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf (Rom. 8:27). And when the Spirit intercedes for us it never misses the will of God for us! Believers are the third person of the trinity of intercession. Both the Son and the Spirit are constantly interceding on our behalf. However this trinity of intercession is not complete until we join the prayer circle. Intercessory prayer is to the believer what the scalpel is to the surgeon. Without it little happens to promote healing and health. Prayer cuts through the most difficult of situations. It exorcises toxins that destroy. It solves problems and brings healing. God has given to us the most powerful of tools, the ministry of intercessory prayer. Let us commit ourselves anew to the awesome privilege of being intercessors on behalf of the advancement of God s Kingdom. Praying with you, Rev. Ed Scearce PAACS Spiritual Dean PAACS Prayer Guide

PAN-AFRICAN ACADEMY OF CHRISTIAN SURGEONS The Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) is a rural-based surgical training program in African Christian Hospitals, directed by experienced board-certified surgeons. It is a Christ centered five-year residency that: Disciples and trains young African physicians as surgeons and followers of Jesus Christ; Provides close supervision with increasing responsibility; Promotes life-long learning and self-assessment. PAACS began as a unique response to the great need for surgical care in Africa. According to the World Health Organization, there should be one surgeon for a population of 20,000. Many places in Africa only have one surgeon for 250,000 people. In other places, it is worse only one surgeon for 2.5 million people, resulting in needless death and permanent disability. Many Africans, especially in rural and under resourced areas find themselves unable to find surgical care, or having to travel long distances, sometimes for days, to get the care they need. This can lead to the worsening of their medical condition; increasing the likelihood of serious complications and potential death. The Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) was created to help meet this need. PAACS trains African physicians to become surgeons to care for Africa s sick and those without access to surgery. PAACS also disciples these surgeons to provide spiritual hope to their patients in the name of Jesus Christ. At this time, PAACS is the only program in Africa that combines accredited surgical training with a spiritual curriculum. This model provides a permanent and sustainable solution to the critical surgical need, rather than a temporary response. PAACS partners with established mission and faith-based hospitals to provide training in surgery to African physicians. PAACS recruits Christian doctors who have been called to make a commitment to serve God and those in greatest need in the underserved areas of Africa. PAACS residents receive intensive training from board certified surgeons who serve as short and long-term faculty. Without PAACS, most of these residents would not be able to afford this type of training. PAACS also provides a formal spiritual curriculum and theological training; teaching residents to minister and spread the good news of Jesus to their patients. This equips them to become medical, community and spiritual leaders. Those who benefit the most are the people of Africa, who otherwise might not have access to quality surgical care and the opportunity to know the truth of Jesus Christ. 6 PAACS Prayer Guide

PAACS ORGANIZATION DAY 1 T herefore, since through God s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God.
