3 August 1, 2013 Dear Prayer Partner: You hold in your hands the fifth annual PAACS Prayer Guide. It, like PAACS itself, has continued to grow and get better. Realizing that many of our partners in this ministry may never get to Africa, it is designed to put a face on all the names you hear and read about. Our PAACS family is growing and the families within PAACS are growing. It will hopefully make the reality of PAACS a living one so that you may pray more effectively. God is working in Africa and through PAACS. At the time this volume will be published, we will have 46 residents from 10 different African countries. By December of 2013, we will have granted 31 general surgery certificates of specialty training and 5 pediatric surgery certificates. They will be working in 13 countries with one in S. Africa for further training. By January, we hope to have 56 residents in training. We are on track to achieve our goal of training 100 surgeons by In order to make that happen, we hope to open three new programs in January 2014 (see Day 19). Harpur Memorial Hospital will open a program in Menouf, Egypt and Arusha Lutheran Medical Center, in conjunction with Selian Hospital, will open in Arusha, Tanzania. We have plans to also open a program at the Malamulo Seventh Day Adventist Hospital in Malamulo, Malawi if everything comes together in time. We now have 40 expatriate and national surgeons working in Africa, assisting in the training of these residents. Two dozen more serve PAACS as part of the PAACS Commission and Advisory Council. Approximately 175 short-term faculty also gave their time and skills willingly during the academic year to help train these surgeons. There remain significant obstacles to the survival and growth of PAACS: spiritual warfare, government recognition, government regulations, recognition from the West African college of Surgeons, finances and willingness of Christian surgeons to serve. We promise to do our best but we realize that only God can accomplish those goals effectively. PAACS is not about what we have done, but rather about what God has done. We wouldn t have it any other way. Please partner with us in prayer, service and giving as we strive to see where God is working and we endeavor to join Him. Bruce C. Steffes, MD, MBA, FACS, FWACS, FCS(ECSA) Executive Director, PAACS

4 Day 1 Prayer Topic: PAACS as an organization The Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons is first and foremost a ministry, carried out by people who need prayer in an environment that demands prayer. We ask you to consider praying daily for PAACS. This prayer guide has one topic per day for 30 days. If you use this faithfully, in a year you will have prayed at least twelve times for everything listed. If you get our newsletter, the PAACS Bulletin, please use the last page of this Prayer Guide to add the things listed under the prayer needs each month. Carry this Prayer Guide with your Bible, put it by your bedside stand, on your desk or wherever you will see it regularly. Please pray for us. Pray that God s name will be glorified and that His saving health will be known among the nations (Ps 67:2 KJV). Suggested items for prayer: 1. That we will remain focused on educational excellence and evangelism for Christ s honor and glory. 2. That we will impact Africa for the Kingdom. 3. That we will expand into the window as God permits. 4. That God will provide the personnel and financial resources to carry out the vision. 5. That many will come to know Christ through the efforts of PAACS surgeons and residents.

5 Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons PAACS MISSION STATEMENT PAACS exists to train and disciple African surgeons to glorify God and to provide excellent, compassionate care to those most in need. PAACS VISION STATEMENT We envision African surgeons living the Gospel and ministering to the sick. PAACS SATEMENT OF FAITH We believe that the Bible, in its entirety, is the only inspired, inerrant Word of God. We believe that there is one God eternally existent in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son, born of a virgin, fully God and fully man, who willingly died on the cross for the sins of Man and rose from the dead to sit at the right hand of the Father. We believe that the forgiveness of sin and the gift of eternal life come only through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit who indwells those who are born again by the Spirit of God, and enables believers to live a godly life. We believe in the personal return of Jesus Christ to reign in power and glory on the earth. He will judge the saved and the lost the saved will receive eternal life and the lost will receive everlasting punishment. We believe in the unity of all believers who love, worship and obey Jesus Christ as the Son of God. We believe that it is the duty of all who love and obey Jesus Christ to proclaim His gospel to their neighbors and to the world and to respond with compassion to the suffering around them in the ways that Jesus did, regardless of race, religion, nationality, or social status. PAACS GOAL We want to train 100 surgeons by the year 2020.

17 Day 8 Government Issues for PAACS In order that our hospitals and graduates take their rightful place in and show proper respect and compliance for their host countries, PAACS continues to seek and support efforts for full government recognition. We wish to do this without giving up the core principles and philosophies that underwrite all we do. That is not always an easy road, but we have had some successes. In early 2013, the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Kenya recognized the training programs at Tenwek and Kijabe Hospitals. This means that the graduates can practice as fully recognized specialists in general surgery and pediatric surgery. The Ethiopia-PAACS program has also been approved by the Higher Education and Quality Assurance Ministry (HERQA). The programs in Gabon, and Cameroon are still unsuccessfully seeking governmental recognition. Please pray that those programs and hospitals will receive approval. There remains great pressure to make our programs secular. We prefer to remain the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons and request your prayers to that end. Spiritual Ministry within PAACS Our mission statement for PAACS states that we want to train and disciple. We believe that healing should be holistic and that physical healing is temporal but spiritual healing is eternal. In 2012, we appointed Rev. Stan Key to take the new role of Spiritual Dean. He ranks evenly with the Academic Dean; that is intentional. As a group which works with people from many different churches, denominations and mission agencies, it is not always easy to find materials that help us keep our eyes first and foremost on Christ. Stan, with the help of many, will soon roll out the first year s spiritual curriculum. One will follow each year thereafter until we have a full-five year curriculum. Please pray for Stan as he develops this material. Pray for the Program Directors as they have responsibility to oversee the spiritual aspects of the PAACS program as well as the medical. Pray that all the residents would "grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ" (II Peter 3:18). Pray most of all that our patients will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

27 PAACS FACTS PAACS is a Commission of the Christian Medical & Dental Associations PAACS administration has only one paid person the career missionaries, short-term faculty, Executive Director, the Academic Dean, the Spiritual Dean, the Director for Africa, accountants, the members of the Commission and the members of the Advisory Council all volunteer their time, services and travel expenses to the organization. Seven percent of the donations are paid to the Christian Medical & Dental Associations home office to cover the legal, book-keeping, accounting, taxreporting and insurance issues. Including those who have trained with us for only a short while and didn t complete the training, we have now touched the lives of 90 African physicians. In December 2012, the top three scores for the COSECSA (College of Surgery of East, Central and Southern Africa) examinations were all achieved by PAACS residents. One of the very first PAACS trainees, Yakoubou Sanoussi, from Niger never got to finish his training in PAACS but he is now the Assistant Program Director at SIM-Galmi Hospital in Niger. Dave Thompson, the founder of PAACS, has left Gabon with the vision of a new program in Egypt. He is presently in language school to learn Arabic. The cash budget for is approximately $841,000. This does not include approximately $200,000+ of in-kind support which goes directly to the trainees and comes from the hospitals and the missionaries. It does not attempt to put a value on all the donated time and services from long and short term missionaries which exceeds $3 million. Two of our residents have become PAACS faculty. One has left to teach at a university teaching program. We now have two teaching in secular programs with another planning to do so in October, All of our graduates have remained in Africa. Over 70% are presently in mission hospitals and most of the remainder are in government district hospitals. PAACS has a five-year curriculum based on the N. American community -training model. Residents must serve one year for each year they receive training. You can sign up for the monthly newsletter, The PAACS Bulletin, at

31 Day 16 Prayer Topic: Future Directions of the PAACS Organization In the book of 1 Samuel, it talks of Samuel naming a stone Ebenezer after a victory over the Philistines. It meant Thus far has the Lord helped us. When we look at where we are and look where we begun, it is obvious that PAACS was not the product of wisdom and our doing, but rather that of God s. Still, we would not be human if we did not try to look ahead in an attempt to see what God may have for us. The most immediate events on the horizon will be the opening of three new programs, one in Egypt, one in Tanzania and one in Malawi (see Day 19). Sometime after that, perhaps the next program will be a program in Togo. We have had interest from several other countries and we would love to seriously consider them as people and resources become available. We are also working to develop programs that are under national faculty trainers. We have had three graduates who have become faculty members at PAACS training sites and look forward to a few more in the near future. At least four PAACS graduates are training others in the university systems in their own countries. We have qualified national surgeons on faculty at all but one program. We are looking forward to expanding the types of training we do. We presently have full training in general surgery and pediatric general surgery and have made a commitment to begin orthopedic training at Tenwek Hospital. At least one or two more places would like to add orthopedic training if sufficient surgeon-educators can be found to come long-term. We are also looking at opening a program in plastic surgery and have seriously considered a obstetrics-gynecology program. Each new field of training is a massive undertaking. Our relationships with the College of Surgery of East, Central and Southern Africa has continued to strengthen and presently all of our graduates are sitting their examinations. We continue to pursue a similar relationship with the West African College of Surgery. As Blackaby suggests, we are looking for places where God is working and we want to go join Him. Please pray for clear direction, wisdom and God s hand upon each and every decision we make. We do not want to build something that is not of God. But if He sounds a clarion call of faith, we wish to be at the forefront!
