2 The Pastor s Pen Page 1 By Ray Meute Fifteen What is the significance of 15? It is the age of my daughter Mindy. It is a big year for the Latino girls of our community who have their Sweet 15 coming of age parties. It is a significant age for young people as they count the days until they can apply for their driving permits. April 15 is the deadline most years for American citizens to file their tax returns. This past March 17 was the 15 year anniversary of my pastorate here at Avondale Presbyterian Church! Many of you have noted this milestone with me and I am very grateful for our life together! These past 15 years are a robust span in the history of this congregation. These past 15 years are a very momentous phase of life for my family in that our children have grown up during them. Josh was 8, Caleb was 5, and Mindy was an infant when we moved here in March of As a matter of fact, so many of the children of our congregation have likewise grown up over this same span of time. It is really exciting to be marrying young people who were coming forward for Children s Sermons not so very long ago. It is awesome to see our young ones growing up into eager young adults venturing out into the world. In many ways our time together seems like it hasn t been all that long but when I think of all of the growth of our young ones, you cannot argue with the progress of history. Session Highlights from March Meeting Thank You Thank you for.your generosity in contributing to two recent Special offerings: Huete Medical Care Fund and Japan Disaster Relief. Our world has changed by leaps and bounds in this same time period. Think of technology. Think of the impact of September 11, Think of the economic decline after such boom times. Think of some of the natural events like Hurricane Katrina, the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan. Think of our own losses of family and friends over these years. Life together is rich! In the time we have together we grow through great joys and great sorrows. We grow through great challenges and great successes. As we continue to grow together we will seek to serve the Lord with greater passion and commitment. We will seek to make an impact upon our community and our world. We will seek to do so with the mind and heart of the risen Lord Jesus the Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit! We will go forward in life together thankful for the life that we share! Reorganized Session Ministry Teams to include the new s. (See listing in this issue of the Dove News). Worked on the financial allocation of our Mission/Benevolence commitments for Elected Phil Hertzog to serve as Presbytery Commissioner for the March meeting of the Donegal Presbytery at Central Church, Downingtown. Agreed to invite Erin Cox-Holmes, Presbytery Executive Presbyter, and Nan Best, Presbytery Assoc. for Vital Congregations, to present the new Acts 16:5 Initiative to our Session at the April meeting as we consider joining in on this three-year program of enhancing our mission and ministry. Agreed to offer the opportunity to serve as the polling place for future Avondale Borough election days.

3 Page Page22 PRAY ER MIN ISTRY BY MARGE PICKEL WHEN HE WAS ON THE CROSS I m not on an ego trip I m nothing on my own I make mistakes, I slip and fall Just common flesh and bones But I ll prove some day, just why I say, I m of a special kind. For when He was on the cross, I was on His mind. For He knew me yes He loved me. He whose glory makes the heavens shine, So unworthy of such mercy; When He was on the cross, I was on His mind. Pray Daily: Igniting Our Passion for God. DO YOU REMEMBER? Do you remember last year in the 40 days between Easter and Pentecost we did a wonderful study on PRAYER called LOVE TO PRAY. Well, the Prayer Action Team has another PRAYER study for us this same period this year called Pray Daily: Igniting Our Passion for God. At the center of this study is The Lord s Prayer. Plan now to be part of this study. Watch for more information! The look of love was on His face, Those thorns were on His head, His blood ran down that scarlet robe, And it stained crimson red; Though His eyes were on the crowd that day, He looked ahead in time, For when He was on the cross, I was on His mind. Yes He knew me yes He loved me. He whose glory makes the heavens shine, So unworthy of such mercy When He was on the cross, I was on His mind For when He was on the cross, I was on His mind. (Ronnie Hinson and Mike Payne; CCLI#353378) As you know we seeking establish kind of may are to some afternational Day of Prayer 2011 The 60th Annual National Day of Prayer will take place Thursday, May 5, Millions will unite in prayer at thousands of events from coast to coast. The theme, A Mighty Fortress is Our God, is based on the verse from Psalm 91:2 which states: I will say to the Lord, my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. Mrs. Joni Eareckson Tada will join Mrs. Shirley Dobson to lead the nation in prayer as the 2011 Honorary Chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. As you may know we are seeking to establish some kind of after-school outreach to the children of our borough and surrounding region. We have discovered that there are some 300 youngsters K-12th grade in the Avondale Borough and Avon Wheel Estates. An organizational group is meeting and we want to actually begin welcoming children in the First through Fifth Grades on Wednesdays, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM beginning the first Wednesday of May. We will invite the children of this area to join us for a program consisting of a light snack, a worship time, and a recreational time each week through the end of the school year. This means we will meet for seven consecutive weeks. We look forward to continuing this ministry in the fall and add to it a tutoring component. We want to make this a community effort and so are including interested people from the Borough and surrounding region. What we need now are people to engage in helping to carry out this ministry to children. It is a mission! Please come to our next meeting on Wednesday, March 30, at 4:30 PM in the Timothy House. Let either Phil Hertzog ( ) or Pastor Ray ( ) know that you are interested in helping to love and care for our neighborhood children.

6 Scout Sunday Recently, Avondale Presbyterian Church had the pleasure to host Pack 191,Webelos I Den members plus one Junior Girl Scout from the Machaloha Service Unit. These scouts earned their God and Family religious emblem. For six weeks in January and February the group met and worked together to learn how a strong family is built layer by layer - like a pizza! The topics they learned about were: Belief in God is a firm foundation for a family, Our spiritual heritage is important, Every family member has good qualities which contribute to a strong family, Every family has rules, Every family experiences difficulties at times, Every family can share with and enjoy the company of other people. The group also memorized the Ten Commandments. A celebration for the achievement was held at Avondale Presbyterian Church on March 20th during our Scout Sunday services. Congratulations, Scouts: Curtis Dixon, Joshua Acuna, Justin Gandee, Kendall Gandee Mark Lysle, Padraic Richardson, D. J. Edmunds, Dylan Gandee, Jacob Shuster, and Paul Kinsey Page 5 Sunday Worship 8:30/11:00am Sunday School 9:45 am Youth Group 6:00-8:30 pm Congratulations Scouts The Deacon s Bench By Mary Kilkka How would you define a deacon? Webster's 20th Century dictionary claims the noun, deacon, is a layman appointed to help the pastor, especially in secular matters. The Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. describes the office of Deacon as set forth in Scripture: one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. All Christians are charged, but deacons provide an organized way to bring love of Jesus Christ to the church and the community. The early church chose the title, diakonos, for this group of leaders. The word literally means persons who serve food to other people, perhaps even "slave". Since their duties required them to meet the needs of others, even washing travelers' feet, it was not the most enviable of jobs. Why was such a humble title chosen? Apparently from the ministry and example of Jesus Christ. He taught his disciples that whoever wants to be first in the kingdom of God must be the servant of all. (Mark 9:35) The leader of the initial group of deacons in the early church was Stephen. He was stoned to death for teaching and preaching about Jesus, demonstrating the role of deacon was far more than menial tasks. Throughout the New Testament service to God (diakonia) is considered to be a central characteristic of those dedicated to being Jesus' disciples, being the suffering servant. We all have different gifts for various tasks within the church, but the things we have in common are orders from the same God. Service is a characteristic of not just Deacons, but it is a requirement of everyone who follows Jesus.

7 Page 6 The Musician s Corner Ahhh! Beautiful Spring time. What a neat time of year. Everything has been going very well in our Music Department. Our praise and worship time during our worship services has been uplifting to us all. I have had many people come up to me after almost each service to let me know how blessed they have been with all of our musicians. They seem to like the balance of our Music in our worship services, which has been an important goal of my own. Also many have commented on the words of our anthems and Praise songs as well. They have been very encouraging and comforting. This should be our goal and objective each and every Sunday. The Bible says that He inhabits the Praises of His people. God loves to hear our praises when we sing to Him and about Him in our worship services, or for that matter, anytime we sing praises to our Fabulous God. Now that we are in our season of Lent, we are all looking forward to celebrating our Lord s Resurrection, the Day of Great Joy for the Christian. This year we have planned some very powerful and beautiful music for our Anthems and special Music. Please pray for our Music Department as a whole as we continue to work on these pieces during our season of Lent. My prayer for this Resurrection Sunday (Easter) is that all who attend will be especially blest in our 2 Worship services on that Resurrection day. We all can definitely get excited about the fact that our Savior Jesus Christ has risen! WOW! What an awesome thing to experience in our hearts. Plan now to invite your friends, co workers, neighbors, etc. Remember, sometimes all it takes is for them knowing that you care enough to ask them. Picture our sanctuary at its fullest on our Palm and Easter Sundays. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to invite them to join with us for a couple worshipful Sundays. We are all looking forward to a much blest time with our families and friends. Because He Lives and Is Risen! Wayne H. Carr Thought: It s because of His RESURRECTION that we have eternal life! Jesus indeed, did pay it all for us! Community Handbell Concert Fundraiser to Support The Garage Youth Center On Sunday, April 10, 2011, the Avondale Presbyterian Church will be hosting its 3rd Annual Community Handbell Concert.
