2 T H E J O U R N E Y O F F A I T H W I T H Fr. Matthew Oakland On Tuesday evening of this past week, I held a Listening Session on Clergy Sexual Abuse. It was attended by 22 individuals, was moderated by one of our parishioners and another took notes. There were two goals. First, an opportunity to have a conversation about the issue in a formal way. It is something that is talked about, especially these past few months, on the sidewalk, at coffee and donuts, in the stands at a game or at any number of gatherings. It was important to have a conversation together as a parish. Our experience of the Church is multifaceted, grounded primarily in our parish, but in some ways connected to our archbishop and the archdiocese, as well as the universal Church and the pope. Archbishop Sartain held a similar gathering for the priests, and asked that we look for feedback from our parishioners, as well. The second goal was to provide an avenue to collect that desired feedback, so the notes listing all of the comments will be forwarded to him as he prepares for the meeting of the US bishops in November, and as he determines how to move ahead here within our own Archdiocese of Seattle, as well. On Tuesday the participants were able to air their concerns, which were categorized naturally as they were being brought up. Anytime an action item was mentioned, Tammy Savage, our moderator, made a note of it. At the end, these action items were posted and the participants had the opportunity to rank them. 1 Necessary. 2 Important. 3 Good. 4 Extra/Helpful. Action Item Average Radical transparency 1.06 Zero toleration policy and processes for abusers and supervisors (including bishops) 1.08 Zero retaliation against those who raise issues and process (outside ethics hotline) 1.09 External reporting investigation and accountability 1.20 Take a stand against statute of limitations of civil and criminal penalties 1.29 Structural change required for accountability 1.47 Open files proactively/get the information out and over with 1.59 Church/Pope sincere apology, and be willing to suffer 1.69 Tell members what we can do to help people heal/stop suffering 1.83 Education (Seminarians, Youth) 2.00 Investigation in WA by Civil Attorney General 2.06 Financial restitution and means clearly communicated 2.36 Reevaluate role of women and lay people in the Church 2.38 Address public perception so that members don t always have to defend the Church 2.71 Many of these things are a part of the larger conversation of the Church s response to the clergy sexual abuse scandal. There are two aspects to consider the original victimization and systematic failures/cover-ups that followed. We must also take into account healing and justice for past victims, as well as looking at present and future processes and structures and protections. It is important that we raise these concerns and ideas with members of the hierarchy and work together as one Church. But it is also important for us to look at our own parish community, and what we can do here, in terms of our own policies and practices and ministry, as well as helping our parishioners address this with the wider culture as sexual abuse happens in every sector of society. Tuesday was a good start, as we realize that even here at Holy Rosary we can and should do more. Frequently Asked Questions about Abuse Cases and this Capital Campaign I have received several questions about this campaign to fully fund priest retirement and its timing with the recent revelations, whether priest abusers will benefit from it, the percentages of priest abusers, etc. As far as the number of priest predators, the PA Grand Jury, the John Jay College study done in 2002 and updated in 2010, and others consistently cite between 4-6% as the average percentage of priests who abused minors over the years prior, with abuse cases increasing in the 1960s, and steeply declining after 1985 similar to the ratios of similar organizations. The legal documents governing the non-profit created for this campaign, and the pension fund itself, excludes any such individuals. This campaign went public two years ago. It would be very difficult to stop partway through, and would have grave consequences for stopping altogether. The current pension plan is paid for by parishioners directly through the ACA and through the parishes. These costs are going up every year (this year $39,000). So we have two choices with this campaign we can make a sacrifice now to fully fund priest retirement for the good priests and sisters who serve us well past, present and future and benefiting from more funds for our ministries for generations to come; or we can continue to increase the annual burden on parishes and parishioners through the current model of funding. Not funding this campaign is an option, but it comes with a cost to the parishes, those who fund our ministries, and those 42nd whom Ave we SW serve. Seattle, WA

3 G R O W I N G I N C H R I S T Holy Rosary Catholic School SPIRIT AND MIND ignited School Highlights & Events First grade students enjoyed a field trip to Remlinger Farms this week, and our Preschool 3s class had a visit from our local fire station, fire truck and all! Our 4th grade students were introduced to a new online adaptive math program called Redbird that will support and build a deeper understanding of our math content. Teachers will be able to monitor their work in real time, which will allow them to support their work and progress. In 5 th grade, students have begun a new unit in Life Science. Students used their microscopes and discovered the main parts and functions of animal cells. Students are able to identify similar cells that make up tissue, and how different kinds of tissue work together to make up an organ. Thursday, Nov. 1st, our 4th grade students will lead the morning mass at 8:35am, celebrating All Saints' Day. Fourth grade students have been working on reports that they will present in class about their particular saint. Don't forget about the Italian Dinner! Tickets can be purchased online for the upcoming Italian Dinner that will be held Saturday, November 3 rd. Ticket information is also on our school website and also in the enclosed insert of this bulletin. The Priority Application Period for NEW students of current school families and parish families is going on right now through November 15th. We are accepting applications for Preschool through 8 th grade. Due to the small number of spots available in our Preschool classes, these classes fill up quickly. A link to our online application can be found at the top of our homepage (holyrosaryws.org). Re-enrollment of current students will happen in January. At Holy Rosary School, tradition and innovation converge to provide a leading-edge education that is grounded in the Catholic faith. Students are engaged by enthusiastic teachers who provide hands-on curricula designed to spark creativity and encourage critical thinking. Each child is given room to discover and develop their own unique gifts. At every grade level, faith meets action through service and the teaching of compassion and social justice. Holy Rosary s tight-knit community of passionate teachers and engaged parents creates a safe place where students become leaders from the inside out. For more information, contact the School Office: or admissions@holyrosaryws.org. P A R I S H & C O M M U N I T Y N E W S A weekly tip on Caring for Our Common Home Instead of using harsh cleansers and chemicals to clean your home or work space, consider environmentally-friendly, non-toxic cleaning products. The creatures living in Puget Sound will be grateful! Urgent Request Dear friends, Coffee and Donuts needs a volunteer to become the manager. There are volunteers to assist the set up/clean up; ordering, paying and pick up of the donuts. There are volunteers to make coffee, serve et al.; but there is no one to manage it. The school classes have a person to help organize which class will serve on what day but the over all management, needs a leader. (Training is provided). If you are willing to become a member of the coffee and donuts ministry please contact Ted Krembs, PAA at ext 213 or paa@holyrosaryseattle.org Submit bulletin articles by 5pm Tuesday to Sherry@holyrosaryseattle.org 3

Saint of the Week Every week, we highlight a particular saint. This week, we celebrate St. Francis of Assisi. Perhaps the most famous Catholic Saint, St. Francis was the favored son of a merchant family until a mystical experience while serving in the army led him to seek to woo Lady Poverty and to imitate Jesus Christ as completely as he possibly could. He is known for many miracles, and is the patron of the poor, of merchants, and of those who care for our natural environment, among many others. We celebrated his feast on October nd Ave SW Seattle, WA

5 P A R I S H & C O M M U N I T Y N E W S We have just received our 1 st ACA rebate check in the amount of $8,994. These funds will be used to pay for the Holy Rosary Bus. We have a potential rebate total of $36,391. Thank you to all who have donated and who continue to pay towards their ACA pledge! We couldn t have done this without you! Parish Goal: $2.0 Million Pledged to Date: $527,675 26% of Parish Goal Total Pledges: 74 Rebate to Parish: $79,151 Separate Donations with Corporate Matches: $44,800* Total Parish Benefit: $123,951 *Some companies do not match religious donations, but will if it is not used for church purposes. This is good news! We are on our way, with just 49 individuals and families participating thus far. Imagine where we will be if everyone participates and how much good will be accomplished!
