Here and now God dwells in all of our lives, bears our sins on the cross, and forgives us all. TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE 22nd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 8:30 am on Sunday, October 21, 2018 Holy Communion Worship Pr Dave Johnson, presiding Today s gospel starts with disciples obsessing over who s number one, which leads Jesus to say something about God's take on importance and power. Here Jesus makes it explicit that the reversal of values in God s community is a direct challenge to the values of the dominant culture, where wielding power over others is what makes you great. When we pray your kingdom come we are praying for an end to tyranny and oppression. We pray this gathered around the cross, a sign of great shame transformed to be the sign of great honor and service. ALL ARE WELCOME The family of Bethany hopes that your worship experience is spiritually fulfilling and your day begins with our Lord s gifts of peace and joy. If you are visiting today, you are invited to the Communion Table. As Christians of the Reformation tradition, we believe that the Sacrament of the Altar is the Real Presence of Christ s body and blood, instituted by Christ Himself as a sign of unity. All baptized and confessing believers are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion by intinction the dipping of the wafer into the wine when the chalice is offered. Gluten-free wafers and grape juice are available. The assembly is to line up down center aisle and return to seats by side aisles.

5 5 THE WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching and song God s Word from the Scriptures (NRSV) A reading from Isaiah, Chapter 53, verses 4-12 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. God s Word from the Scriptures (NRSV) A reading from Hebrews, Chapter 5, verses 1-10 Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.so also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; as he says also in another place, You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 8 8 Sermon God s Word Applied to Life Hymn of the Day O Christ, Our Hope vs 1, 2, 4 & 5 (page 15) (Please stand for the last verse) The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

9 Prayers of Intercession Longing for God s will to be fulfilled among us, we pray persistently for the church, the world, and all people in need. (A brief silence) Holy One, open lines of communication within your church, enabling us to listen to each person s voice and to lift up each person s unique gifts for your sake. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Fill creation from mountain peaks to the deepest valleys with your invigorating Spirit. Give strength and provision to animals that prepare for colder weather. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Grant your Spirit of humility to those who hold authority. Direct political leaders to live in service to their citizens, and turn our eyes and our hearts toward our neighbors Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Guard and protect the ones who call to you out of despair, illness, or injury. Deliver them from their struggles into havens where they can find healing and faithful companionship. Bring us all into a righteous reality where honor is given to the lowly and where we all share in the life that you give. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. 11 11 The Great Thanksgiving and Words of Institution The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of ev ry nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

12 12 Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. 17 17 Light at the Inn, the Dickinson County area Homeless Shelter, is preparing for the start of its third season. Currently, we are seeking additional churches, community organizations and individual volunteers to join with us in this ministry outreach to the homeless within our community. The Shelter will rotate between local churches on a weekly basis beginning in November and run until the end of March. The Shelter offers a safe and warm overnight accommodation with a hot dinner, breakfast and packed lunch for adults in our area who find themselves without a roof over their head on a cold winter night. All guests are screened and given a breathalyzer test each evening. The following churches have already committed to hosting the Shelter this winter: Our Saviour s Lutheran; First Covenant of Iron Mountain; Norway Covenant; Trinity United Methodist; Redemption Hill; St Barbara s/st Mary s; Vulcan/Norway; Grace Methodist/Bethany Lutheran, Norway and First Methodist of Iron Mountain and Quinnesec. Volunteers from the community are needed to make and serve meals, supervise guests throughout the open hours, transport guests if necessary and move cots and shelter supplies from one church to the next on Sunday afternoon. Training is necessary for new volunteers and will be offered on the following dates: Monday, Nov 5th at Our Saviour s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain; Monday, Nov. 12 th at Redemption Hill in Kingsford; Monday, Nov 19 th at Trinity Methodist in Iron Mountain; and Monday Nov 25 th at First Covenant of Iron Mountain. All training will begin at 6pm and last approximately 2 hours. If you were trained and worked last season then it is not necessary to be trained again. There is a need! The 2017/2018 season was not a particularly cold winter, however, the Shelter was occupied 128 nights out of our 147 night season. If you, your church membership, your social group, or your work group is interested in participating in this community effort, please call the Shelter phone, to speak to a coordinator or leave a message and we will return your call.
