ELW refers to the Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the red worship book. Page numbers are in the front of the book with hymn numbers following in the middle & end. During worship, please silence all communication devices. *Please stand as you are able. GATHERING Gathering Music Here I Am, Lord setting, Albrecht Megan McCormick, flute Welcome/Theme of the Day Today s gospel starts with disciples obsessing over who s number one, which leads Jesus to say something about God's take on importance and power. Here Jesus makes it explicit that the reversal of values in God s community is a direct challenge to the values of the dominant culture, where wielding power over others is what makes you great. When we pray your kingdom come we are praying for an end to tyranny and oppression. We pray this gathered around the cross, a sign of great shame transformed to be the sign of great honor and service. *God s Generosity Gathering paraphrased from Psalm 111 The assembly reads responsively. Extravagant, loving God, your abundance overflows around us. Open our eyes to see all that you have so generously given us. our life in Christ, our health, family and friends to love us, Jesus to forgive us, the Holy Spirit to transform us. When we experience this goodness and grace of God, it transforms us and grace is made visible as the people of God respond as generous givers. Teach us, Lord, the difference between the affluence of our culture and the purity and abundance of your kingdom. Help us to rejoice in all that you have so generously given us, and to lightly hold onto the things of this world for Jesus is our greatest gift! God s generosity never ends. *Gathering Song You Servants of God ELW Hymn 825 3
*Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. *Hymn of Praise Glory to God WOV setting 5 4

*Prayer of the Day Let us pray together. Almighty God our Father, your generous goodness comes to us new every day. By the work of your Spirit lead us to acknowledge your goodness, give thanks for your gifts, and serve you in willing obedience for a world in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. WORD First Reading A Reading from 2 Corinthians 8:1-3, 7, 9; 9:6-15 NRSV, page 941 Christian fellowship involves sharing with those in need. Here Paul is gathering a collection for the church in Jerusalem from all the Gentile churches he helped found. We can be extravagant in our giving because God is extravagant, not stingy, in providing for our lives. We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia; for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For, as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means. They gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us. Now as you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. 6
The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. As it is written, He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever. He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. Through the testing of this ministry you glorify God by your obedience to the confession of the gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them and with all others, while they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God that he has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! After the reading, Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 91:9-16 The assembly reads responsively. Because you have made the LORD your refuge, and the Most High your habitation, no evil will befall you, nor shall affliction come near your dwelling. For God will give the angels charge over you, to guard you in all your ways. Upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion cub and viper; you will trample down the lion and the serpent. I will deliver those who cling to me; I will uphold them, because they know my name. They will call me, and I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble; I will rescue and honor them. With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation. Second Reading A Reading from Hebrews 5:1-10. NRSV, page 973 Using imagery from scripture and from Jewish worship practices, Jesus is presented as the great high priest who was obedient to God s saving plan. Through his suffering and death he has become the source of eternal salvation. Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; 7
and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; as he says also in another place, You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. After the reading, Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. Word for God s Children Children age 3 7 are invited to the All Saints Room. They will return after the Sermon. We encourage at least one parent to be present. *Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia WOV setting 5 8
*Gospel The Holy Gospel according to Mark 10: NRSV, page 823 Glory to you, O Lord. On the way to Jerusalem the disciples ask Jesus to grant them seats of honor. Jesus responds by announcing that he and his followers will rule through self-giving service. After the reading of the gospel, The Gospel of Our Lord! Praise to You, O Christ! Sermon Pr. Spencer Steele *Hymn of the Day We Are an Offering ELW Hymn 692 *Affirming the Call to a Life of Stewardship In baptism, God calls us to share in God s mission of caring for the world, sharing the gifts God has given us. We are stewards, caretakers of God s gifts. Everything we have is a gift from God, and God asks us to use it all for God s purposes. Generosity flows naturally out of our gratitude for God s gifts of love, health, family, and life itself. In God s church, we are stewards of the good news of God s love for us in Jesus Christ. We are called to share that good news with new generations. Inspire us to be passionate people about doing God s mission. Set us on fire for you, Lord. Stewardship is...all that we do, with ALL that we have, ALL the time. I believe that stewardship is a way of life and I will live into stewardship becoming a way of my life. Amen! 9
*Prayers of the People Open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we pray for the church, the world, and all of God s creation. After each petition: God has abundantly blessed us, may we abundantly give. Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting the power of Christ and the gifts of the Spirit. Amen. *Share the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people greet one another with the peace of Christ. Call to Stewardship Offering First Fruits Schram Adult Choir and Megan McCormick, flute The assembly responds to the Word of God by gathering an offering for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. The music is offered as a gift to the glory of God. You may give your offering in the offering plate, or by using a credit or debit card at the Giving Kiosk, or Give by Text ( ), or through Simply Giving, or by sending it to the church office. The table is set. *Prayer of Thanks for Abundance Let us pray. Loving God, your abundance overflows all around us. As we grow in the practice of giving, teach us, Lord, the difference between the affluence of our culture and the abundance of your way of life. You have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts; ready to praise you and to respond to those in need. Bless these offerings, and multiply them into blessings for your people in our community and around the world. Amen. 10
MEAL *Great Thanksgiving May the God of generosity be with you! And also with you. People of God, open your hearts to the One who blesses us beyond our imagination. God always surprises us with blessings. Children of the abundant God, join your voices in glad songs of praise. Our hearts and voices sing your praise. In those first days, Imaginative God, you poured all that was in your heart into the silence and emptiness of chaos. You crafted all this goodness and beauty for your children who are created in your image that we may enjoy your gifts forever. Prophets came to remind us that you are a God of blessing. You sent Jesus to come to us, bearing the ring of redemption to slip onto our fingers, the robe of forgiveness to wrap around our broken lives. So, with those who have received your blessings in every age and place, with those who seek to be stewards here and now, we join our voices in praise to you: Holy, Holy, Holy WOV setting 5 11
Words of Institution Your love for us, Benevolent God, is the gift given to us in the bread and the cup every time we gather at your table. We taste your goodness in the bread which is broken for us. We drink your life from the cup of compassion. We offer the gifts you have so abundantly given to us so that the hungry may be filled, the homeless may find shelter, the captive be set free, the sick may be made well, and all creation may rejoice in your blessings. Christ died, the blessing which destroyed sin; Christ rose, the gift which conquered death; Christ will come again, the treasure of God s kingdom yet to come. Pour your Holy Spirit on us whose breath revives us for life, whose fire rouses us to love and on these gifts of bread and wine. Bless this feast of love. Nurture in us the fruits of the Spirit, that we may be a living tree, sharing your extravagant love with all the world. Grace our table with your presence. Come, Holy Spirit. With your holy ones of all times and places, with the earth and all its creatures, with sun and moon and stars, we praise you, O God, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forever. Amen. *Lord s Prayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. *Invitation to Communion Come, receive Christ s abundant gifts. Amen. Sacrament of Holy Communion All who are baptized and believe in the presence of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion are welcome to receive the Sacrament. To facilitate flow, the ushers invite the side sections, the front few rows and then the back rows. The people come forward, using the center aisle, and may 12
kneel or stand at the altar rail. Gluten free wafers are available. Our wine is grape juice so that all may freely receive and is served by common or individual cup. Please return to your seat using the side aisles. Children may receive the sacrament if they have completed instruction with a pastor. Children who do not commune may come forward for a blessing. Communion Songs The whole assembly is invited to praise God in song. Lamb of God WOV setting 5 Will You Let Me Be Your Servant ELW Hymn 659 *Prayer Let us pray. Holy and compassionate God, in bread and wine you give us gifts that form us to be humble and courageous. May your words come to life in our serving and in our witness, that we may speak a living voice of healing and justice to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our rock and our redeemer. Amen. 13
SENDING *Blessing May God bless, guide, strengthen and transform you as a living sacrifice. Go and live as God s faithful stewards. Go and live as passionate followers of Jesus Christ. Go and serve others through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. *Sending Song To Be Your Presence ELW Hymn 546 *Dismissal The assisting minister sends the assembly into mission.
