Communion We are celebrating the Lord s Supper today. What is this Sacrament? It is the receiving of Christ s body and blood, together with the bread and wine, for the assurance of the forgiveness of our sins (Mt. 26:17-29; 1 Cor. 11:23-29). It is an expression of unity among us when it comes to the teachings of Jesus (Jn. 8:31,32). If you are visiting with us today, please speak with one of our Pastors about receiving this Sacrament. Prayer Before Worship By your grace, O God, grant us the forgiveness of all our sins. And by your Holy Spirit enlighten our eyes to see both our own sinfulness and the holiness of your law, that our trust may not stand in the righteousness of works, but in your grace which you have promised in your Son, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to sanctify and cleanse us. 3 THE SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Divine Service II is a version of the historic liturgy of the Christian church and may also be found on p. 28 of the blue hymnals. OPENING HYMN God Has Spoken by His Prophets tune God has spoken by his prophets, Spoken his unchanging Word, Each from age to age proclaiming God the one, the righteous Lord. In the world s despair and turmoil One firm anchor holds us fast: God is king, his throne eternal, God the first and God the last. 2 God has spoken by Christ Jesus, Christ, the everlasting Son, Brightness of the Father s glory, With the Father ever one, Spoken by the Word incarnate, God from God, before time was, Light from Light, to earth descending He reveals our God to us. 3 God is speaking by his Spirit, Speaking to the hearts of all, In the ageless Word expounding His own message for us all. Through the rise and fall of nations One sure faith is standing fast. God abides, his Word unchanging, God the first and God the last. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, For sins of habit and sins of choice, 3

4 For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, You should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus sake. P: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. 6 THE WORD FIRST LESSON Ezekiel 2:1-3:4 Ezekiel is called to minister to a rebellious people who had fallen under the judgment of the Lord. 2 He said to me, Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you. 2 As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. 3 He said: Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day. 4 The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, This is what the Sovereign LORD says. 5 And whether they listen or fail to listen for they are a rebellious people they will know that a prophet has been among them. 6 And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people. 7 You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious. 8 But you, son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not rebel like that rebellious people; open your mouth and eat what I give you. 9 Then I looked, and I saw a hand stretched out to me. In it was a scroll, 10 which he unrolled before me. On both sides of it were written words of lament and mourning and woe. 3 And he said to me, Son of man, eat what is before you, eat this scroll; then go and speak to the people of Israel. 2 So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat. 3 Then he said to me, Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it. So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth. 4 He then said to me: Son of man, go now to the people of Israel and speak my words to them. 6

8 SECOND LESSON 2 Timothy 3:10-4:5 Serving the Lord in our day and age will not always be popular work, but the Lord will equip his worker for the task. 10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. GOSPEL Mark 6:1-6 Even our Savior was rejected by his hearers as he preached the Gospel in his hometown. 6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. Where did this man get these things? they asked. What s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn t this the carpenter? Isn t this Mary s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren t his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him. 4 Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home. 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ. 10 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THANK OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Almighty God, we acknowledge with thanks that all we have and enjoy is a gift from your gracious hand. We come before you today in heartfelt appreciation for our nation and its people. C: We thank you for enabling us to worship you in freedom and to serve you without fear. P: You have enriched us with the bounties of farm and factory, the beauty of forest and mountain, and the marvels of medicine and science. C: For all these blessings, we praise and glorify you. P: Look with favor upon our nation, and preserve our cherished liberties. Enable our leaders to govern with wisdom, honesty, courage, and justice. Protect those who serve in the armed forces and those who maintain peace and safety in our communities. C: Give us willingness to obey our nation s laws and to work for the common good. 10

11 P: Keep our financial institutions secure and our economy strong. Bless our fields that they may produce abundant harvests. Guard us from calamities of nature and accident, and spare our land from the ravages of disease and epidemic. C: Teach us not to worry but to cast all our cares on you. By your Spirit lead husbands and wives to love each other, parents to nurture their children, young adults to assume responsibility, and children to show respect. UPDATE FROM BETHLEHEM S YOUTH GROUP - 21 teens and 4 chaperones from Bethlehem spent last week at the 2018 WELS International Youth Rally held at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. NEW BEGINNINGS A HOME FOR MOTHERS is a WELS-based home for single mothers and their children. We would like to invite you to Taste & Tour, which is a free, one-hour monthly event held at the New Beginnings home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (9215 W. Wisconsin Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53226). The current dates for this tour are July 19, Aug 23, Sept 20, and Oct 18 th. WAUKESHA COUNTY FAIR BOOTH Bethlehem is working together with two sister churches (Trinity, Waukesha and Grace, Waukesha) to have a booth at this year s Waukesha County Fair. The booth has information about all our Waukesha County WELS churches, provides free balloons for kids, and runs drawings for a Luxury Experience at Miller Park and several Kwik Trip Gift Cards. We re looking for volunteers who are willing to work 2- hour shifts (which range from 12:00-9:00 PM) from July Volunteers get free admission to the Fair and free parking for the day. Volunteers are asked to attend a brief training session at Grace in Waukesha on either Thursday, July 6:30 PM or Saturday, July 14 at 9:00 AM.
