LORD, KEEP US MINDFUL OF THE JUDGMENT! The Second Sunday of End Time November 9-12, 2017

N84 W15252 Menomonee Ave. Menomonee Falls, WI N108 W14290 Bel Aire Lane Germantown, WI WELCOME TO WORSHIP! We are pleased that you have chosen to worship the Lord with us today. If you are a guest visiting with us, know that we are thankful you have joined us, and please take a moment to sign the friendship register during the gathering of the thank offering. Large print hymnals (both locations) are available upon request from an usher. Hearing assist devices (Falls only) are available upon request from an usher. Restrooms at the Falls: In the lower level of the church and also down the school hallway. Restrooms at Germantown: In the north and south halls of the building. If you need a place to quiet a restless child, the service is streamed to a TV in the lower level of the Falls and in the Alpha Room at Germantown. SERVICE NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY The order of service for today is printed in this folder. The hymns are found in Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal, the red hymnal, or are printed in the folder. Communion We are celebrating the Lord s Supper today. What is this Sacrament? It is the receiving of Christ s body and blood, together with the bread and wine, for the assurance of the forgiveness of our sins (Mt. 26:17-29; 1 Cor. 11:23-29). It is an expression of unity among us when it comes to the teachings of Jesus (Jn. 8:31,32). If you are visiting with us today, please speak with one of our Pastors about receiving this Sacrament. 2

THE SECOND SUNDAY OF END TIME Our order of worship this morning is the Common Service, which is a version of the historic liturgy of the Christian church, and is found on p. 15 in the front of the red hymnal. OPENING HYMN The King Will Come at Age s End 731 The congregation is invited to sing on verses 2 and 5. (9:15) 3

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS P: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. P: Let us pray. Lord God Almighty, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may always look forward to the end of this present evil age and to the day of your righteous judgment. Keep us steadfast in true and living faith and present us at last holy and blameless before you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE WORD FIRST LESSON Malachi 4:1-3 As God warned Israel that the time of his Judgment was near, so also are we reminded to take his warnings seriously. 4 Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire, says the LORD Almighty. Not a root or a branch will be left to them. 2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. 3 Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act, says the LORD Almighty. PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 90 ALL SING: O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home. 6

Under the shadow of your throne Your saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is your arm alone, And our defense is sure. Before the hills in order stood Or earth received its frame, From everlasting you are God, To endless years the same. Spoken responsively by (P) Pastor, (M) Men, and (W) Women. P: We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. M: You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. W: All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. P: Who knows the power of your anger? ALL: For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. ALL SING: A thousand ages in your sight Are like an evening gone, Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Soon bears us all away; We fly, forgotten, as a dream Dies at the op ning day. SECOND LESSON Romans 2:2-11 The apostle reminds us that no one will escape Gods' Judgment. Rather than fear, the key is to remain prepared for this day. 2 Now we know that God s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God s judgment? 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 God will repay each person according to what they have done. 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism. 7

PSALM RESPONSE Psalm 90 P: Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. M: Relent, O Lord! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. W: Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. P: Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. M: May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. W: May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us ALL: Yes, establish the work of our hands. ALL SING: O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Still be our guard while troubles last And our eternal home! Worship services center around the Gospel Reading; we rise to highlight its function. After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: 8

GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus lays out the picture of a huge room which holds all the world's people divided into two groups: the large group sentenced to damnation, and the tiny sliver of people who listened to Jesus and are among the saved sheep. 31 When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. 37 Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? 40 The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. 41 Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. 44 They also will answer, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you? 45 He will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. 46 Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. 9

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY Great God, What Do I See and Hear 208 SERMON Malachi 4:1-3 The Sun of the Lord s Righteousness Rises to Judge After the sermon, the congregation sings: 10

THANK OFFERING Please take a moment during the gathering of the thank offering to sign the FRIENDSHIP REGISTER and get to know those seated around you. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Out of the depths we cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear our voices. C: Let your ears be attentive to our cries for mercy. P: Heavenly Father, we confess with sorrow that we have sinned and deserve only your anger and punishment. C: If you kept a record of our sins, we would surely be lost. P: We confess with joy that your unfailing love has redeemed us. C: Our hope is in you and in your full redemption. P: Around us we see the birth pangs of the last days: war, famine, earthquakes, false prophets, spiritual apathy. C: Use these signs to remind us that we do not know the day or hour when Christ will come again. P: Keep us faithful to your Word; send your Spirit to strengthen our faith so that we are always prepared for your Son s return as judge. C: Make us faithful in sharing your Word, and cause many more to put their hope in you before the end comes. P: Build our fellowship of love as brothers and sisters in faith. C: Help us support one another when trials and troubles come our way. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. 11

P: Hear us Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. Heavenly Father, we eagerly wait for Jesus to come again and make all things new. May he find us, whose names are written in the Lamb s book of life, faithfully enduring to the end, through the power of your Holy Spirit. C: Come, Lord Jesus. May your grace be with us. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. THE SACRAMENT P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who preserves his Church to the end of time when he will come again as king to judge all people and take his 12

own to glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. 13

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei DISTRIBUTION DISTRIBUTION HYMNS If God Himself Be for Me

SONG OF SIMEON Nunc Dimittis P: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. P: We give thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us with this holy supper. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and increase our love for one another. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 15
